I think the most shocking part of the article is this line:

When he woke up, rolling blackouts caused the elevator to be shut down

The f*ck? I've lived in Virginia 45 years and we've never had a "rolling blackout". Is this a Texas/California thing? They just randomly turn your power off?

2012-08-10 08:00:02 AM
Do hotels record calls to the front desk? Because otherwise this guy is expecting hotels to fire people based on the word of one unhappy customer.

Even if his story is 100% accurate I wouldn't see that as a reasonable policy.

2012-08-10 08:08:26 AM
Somehow I doubt that his being a wounded vet is relevant. I doubt the employee was aware.

And I wouldn't call it being "mocked" either. "Hey gimpy Marine, you look like a girl!". That's a mocking. Lighten up Francis.

According to wikipedia, it is exactly a Texas and California thing.

Oh NO! He was MOCKED!

The guy could take a few bullets, but he can't take a rude hotel worker?

What was the receptionist supposed to do? Carry him? Drop his ass down the stairs, or just push him in the chair and hope all goes well?

Does PTSD sometimes present as vaganitis sanditis?

Better pysch-hold him to make sure he doesn't hang himself from his closet pole.

(Double win if he does it in a Best Western and sends his suicide note to the same paper)

What is he trying to get out of the hotel chain? I mean, its not like they have a corporate directive that states that its cool to mock the disabled. They apologized, refunded his money, I presume they fired said employee. What else is there to do? Really. What else can they do for him?

Ya know, that article doesn't make him sound to pleasant. One employee is a dick to you and you go and tell Facebook and refuse to accept any apology at all?

2012-08-10 08:29:24 AM
I think he's just really pushing to get the lady fired. Which I agree would be an appropriate action, but... well, there's not much else Best Western can do. Apologize? Done. Refund? Done. I guess he's just out for getting the lady fired.

2012-08-10 08:32:37 AM
The article's explanation of how he got paralyzed is a good illustration of why you should never volunteer.

2012-08-10 08:33:05 AM
Not that the employee wasn't acting like a complete dick, but I don't see what stamping his feet and throwing a hissyfit are going to do. They've tried to apologise, he jammed his fingers in his ears, what are they supposed to do now? Cripple the clerk? Close the hotel down? Nuke & pave?

He's complaining that they haven't changed their policies.... of what, humiliating disabled people?

The Monahans News reported hotel owner Andy Patel said staff could have injured Staples if they attempted to help him. Patel also told The News that hotel policy is to call EMS to request help, but he was not sure why that policy was not followed.

Sounds like a pretty good non-emergency policy to me.

And this business of demanding an employee be fired is a crock. The customer's not the only one with problems and we don't know anything about why the employee reacted the way he did. The odds of him being a total twaffle are pretty close to 100% but automagically firing the guy without dragging him into the office first and politely asking him what in the great green fark he was thinking may be a good idea. You know, to fix the problem.

I used to wonder why folks really hated Beavis & Butthead, or South Park. I would argue along the lines of "No no no, their being so stupid IS the joke!"

I see there's a whole new crop o folks that didn't realize the joke and just thought that's how some folks are supposed to act.

I swear this is Cartman working at Best Western... not realizing how stupid he is. Sigh.

If you'd comprehended the article, you would have realized that the person didn't need help getting down. He just wanted someone to get his bags down and his wheelchair down. The vet seemed quite adamant that he himself did not need to be carried.

I agree that there isnt much more to do here... employee was a dick, company apologized and refunded his money... move on.

With that said, I am slightly annoyed that a customer service rep who sucks at servicing customers is gainfully employed, while I am not. I should work for an airline im so godamn good at appeasing people.

Yep usually around this time every year, the news stories pop up where they interview local energy reps and the reps usually start in with "we don't have enough electricity, and too many heavy users, so we are going to start rolling blackouts" In those same stories they usually also talk about plants that are shut down because these companies don't want to over produce.

It's a lulz thing here in Texas, until your AC is killed in the middle of a 100 degree day.

definitely don't agree that this warrants the boycott of an entire franchise (especially since they claim to all be independently owned and operated), but this biatch should be fired. The hospitality industry is about customer service. even if he was being a pushy, dick bag (which i doubt), she was there to do a job.

So the story distills to:

Customer: The elevator doesn't work and I can't carry these bags down the stairs because of an ADA thing. Help me.
Clerk: No lol.
Customer: What?
Clerk: "NO. LOL." Did I stutter?

It doesn't matter that the customer's in a wheelchair and it certainly doesn't matter how he got there. A disabled person who needed help asked for it and the clerk was a total jerk in her refusal to help.

Curb the hyperbole. He's pushing to have the employee fired. Right or wrong, that's the issue to discuss.

The EMS policy is fine, but irrelevant. He wasn't asking for anyone to carry him, but rather for someone to take his bag and chair down. (Though that's odd, and a little suspect. I guess he was just going to use the railing..? I suppose he does have the upper body strength for it.) I think that's a fair accommodation request when the power goes out.

But yes, I agree with the general sentiment that the employee shouldn't automatically be fired. Even if accurately reported, there was a single snarky remark. It's worth a write-up, but that's it (unless, of course, there have been similar past incidents).

/worked customer service in my younger years, and was regarded as an exemplary employee... still made a few snarky remarks on my bad days.

Soldier, Marine, Sailor are all proper nouns, at least from the services' perspective. I don't know about the Air Force, but I would assume they have the same policy.

Northern Virginia had rolling blackouts during the winter of 94-95, or maybe it was 93-94. It was brutally cold that year, and the power companies couldn't keep up. Power would go off for about an hour at a time, usually once a day.

He's from Maine. We hold grudges like no one business. We are also not people of sweetness and light and hypocrisy. It we're pissed off at you, you'll know it. My grandfather refused to acknowledge his brother in law's existence, even when he was visiting the house, for five years because of some dust up.

Staples stated what he wanted: For this never to happen again, for the hotel management to fire that employee to put the fear of god into the rest of their staff to never treat a disabled person or veteran like that again.

And this.

He didn't question defending a nation of assholes when he had his drill sergeant berating him while he did 1000 pushups (this example takes place before he took that bullet for his country)?

Should the staffer be fired? Yep, but this boycotting a la Chick-fil-A stuff is becoming silly. The Occupy Chicken Sandwich protest was silly, so is Occupy Motel Room That Smell Like Cigarettes.

What was he doing on the 3rd floor? Most of these places have handicapped accessible rooms, where the other motels booked?

So, why didn't he ask for help getting his stuff down instead of the vague "help me"?

Also, he was in a Best Western. Did he expect them to send up a porter?

And usually, most hotel have the handicap rooms at ground level. Why didn't he book/reserve a handicap room?

I spent an extended amount of time in a wheelchair after being run over by a car, and I've experience that people can be assholes to folks in wheelchairs. But to hang on to the animosity is to allow the assholes to control your life. Personally, I'd rather move on to living my own life.

Why, exactly, is this national news? Oh, because someone didn't worship him.

I had a talk with my son the other day, when he asked why I didn't have veteran tags on my car. I replied that the guys who have those plates also wear the hats and love the attention. Nobody asked me or them to serve, we just did. Quit being such an attention whore.

I see a lot of justifiable anger both in the young man's wasted life and his father's anguish but they're directing it at the wrong people. It wasn't the friggin hotel that sent the kid off to get maimed for no good reason. It wasn't the hotel employee that robbed this kid of his life and his father of grandchildren and the carrying on of the family name, etc.

It was the NEOCONS and the rest of the complicit assholes who thought this all was a good idea.

/Dad is proud, I "hope" the story is true and he's just not coping.
