The US boycotted the 1980 games. Ford was President in 1976.

Subby isn't necessarily wrong. If the US team loses, it would still be the first loss since Carter was president...

Fingers crossed for another couple of sitting-down medals for team GB :-)

Should be some good relays (4 x 100 and 4 x 400) to watch today.

Elsewhere, Canada continues to rock third place with yet another bronze in the men's 10k marathon swim. Who needs gold and silver, anyway?

I don't like the USA's chances in the 4x400 to win gold. Two big injuries so far this Olympics. I think this will be their biggest test in the past few Games.

Would "not win" have been better than "lose"? Let's not forget the drug-fueled, controversy-laden nonsense that was the 2000 4x400 m relay in Sydney

/US wins Gold!
//Well, not really, cause this guy wasn't eligible... Nigeria wins Gold!
///Well, wait, okay, fine, the US won Gold!
////Wait, what about this other guy who admitted PED use under oath? ...Nigeria should have Gold!
//Well, maybe. We'll see...

The USA's best chance in the 4x400 would be to mug Pistorius and put one of his blades on our guy with the busted tibia.

They caught a break when Jamica and Kenya didn't get out of the heats, but then they let RSA back in, which was not helpful.

This.

I expect RSA to medal (which I"m fine with; it'd be a pretty historic occasion for Pistorius) and have a good chance at gold.

Heh, one gold, five silvers and eleven bronzes. I'm guessing Canadian news sites are probably using the same "overall medals" table that the American ones do.

You better believe it. Check out the sports page of our national newspaper, which has Canada in 11th place in the medal count. In actual fact, we're 32nd.

At the Vancouver games, we ranked by gold (as it should be). Yet, because of our poor performance in London, we're moving the goalposts to save face. It pisses me off because it makes us look so ridiculous and insecure.

I'm pretty sure that every Canadian alive, exposed to only domestic newsprint, was unaware of this whole "Golds only" table until a couple years ago. Only in Vancouver, where we just threw mountains of money at our athletes for 4-8 years prior, did we have over 50% of our medals be gold. Also the only time we led the Gold table.

I think most of us are okay with our athletes being 3rd in the world. I mean, it would be rude to take Gold away from the hosts, and we don't want to upset the American juggernaut, as we wouldn't like them when they're angry.

The US took the Gold lead for the first time yesterday when we leapfrogged China. I half expect American news to switch to sorting by golds by the end of the games.

I've been hoping for the US to win more golds but China to win more medals, just to see if they do switch. Given the events remaining, though, I think China's challenge is over.

As of the end of the primetime broadcast last night, the US had the most gold, silver, and bronze medals (and thus obviously the most medals overall), so how you sort them at this point is totally moot.

somehow the olympic rules make martial arts completely uninteresting

Judo = wrestling in bathrobes. judo throws are really rare.

Taekwondo = bouncing back & forth for 45 seconds not attacking, followed by a kick to the crotch

By the way, I've figured out the solution to the beach volleyball crap. They should eliminate it and replace it with pool volleyball. It should be played in someone's backyard with a beach ball.

They are doing multiple heats so that one crash doesn't fark over the good racers.

After this round of heats, the top 4 from each group go to the final, which is a one race bloodbath.

The thing that always confuses me is where all of the other gold medals come from. According to American TV the Olympics consist only of swimming, diving, track & field, volleyball, gymnastics, rowing, and water polo. Of those, I've seen China win like 4 or 5 medals tops. I think those Red Commie Bastards are cheating.
