That was a great movie because of great acting. It's great to hear that the mother didn't really die in the fire at the end of the movie, but is actually doing well.

I love that movie. Anyone who says Leonard DiCaprio isn't a good actor never watched that flick. Many people thought he actually was a Down's Syndrome kid back then.

He wasn't too bad in the Basketball Diaries, either.

However, he had that stigma of Teenage girl heartthrob, which led people to think he sucked.

Now that he's older and the SQUEEEEEEEEEE is gone, it's easier to judge his work.

Yeah, the Basketball Diaries sold me on him. Still dont like that hair though.

My browser at work wont load the video so I cant see how much weight Gilbert's mom lost......

It was actually moving to hear Leonardo tell Larry King how much effort, research, homework he put into preparing for that film.

I've been saying for decades that the problem with Hollywood is too much magic powers and special effects. Gilbert Grape is a movie about humans and it doesn't need death and destruction to tell a story.

Catch Me If You Can convinced me he was actually a good actor. The Departed made me a fan. I still got odd looks for that for a few years. I don't anymore.

He was really only a douchebag in Titanic but that was the character, not his fault.

The one thing that I learned from that movie is that if you need to get a retard off of a water tower, Johnny Depp is your man.

Remember the nerd rage that erupted when he was rumored to be cast as Anakin Skywalker?
Doesn't seem like such a bad idea now, does it?

Hey, Lucas can still go back and digitally insert Leo into all of the Anakin scenes, so all hope is not lost.

If the diabetes is caused by excessive weight, it will sometimes resolve when the weight is lost.

Yeah, she was also likely Obesity induced Type II diabetic, which is controllable just by watching your diet and monitoring your blood sugar. Both my parent's have it and never have to take insulin shots, or even have insulin on hand. For all intents and purposes, losing a little bit of weight and not pigging out on sugar basically "cures" it.

CSB:

I worked at a video store when that came out. Someone once came in and, inadvertently, asked for a copy of "What's Eating Gilbert Gottfried"

Later that year I SAW Gilbert Gottfried at a comedy club on South Street in Philly (can't remember the name)

After the show he was just hanging around so I went up and TOLD him the story of the video store guy.

He chuckled and in a totally normal, non-Gilbert Gottfried voice said "Ha ha, yes, I've heard that before" and that was that.

Hey, I think you don't respect Lucas' ability to make anyone a bad actor. He made Samuel L Jackson a bad actor.

As for DiCaprio... he had a time where he made bad decisions in movies. Right up until Man In the Iron Mask, where everyone got to punch DiCaprio in the face... including DiCaprio. After that he started doing movies like Blood Diamond and The Departed, and I got a new respect for him.

like tom cruise, leo is one of those actors i don't think i could stand to be in the same room building with, but they are really good actors so i have a love/hate thing for them. love their acting, hate them.

1) This joke is 15 years too late -- I laughed anyway.

2) Saw it twice in the theatre. Something about it just really connected with me.

3) Hated the Basketball Diaries movie, DiCaprio's acting in it, and "Lots of People Who Died". Haven't read the book, but I'm kind of striking out on Jim Carroll thus far...

4) Do NOT, under any circumstances, watch Revolutionary Road (starring DiCaprio and Winslet). It sucks, Sucks, SUCKS. The acting is OK but the characters are very annoying and seem very unnatural. Disbelief is not well suspended. C.f., Like Crazy.

Yeah, like The Beach. Yeesh. That movie got so much hype and then it fell flat. I can't even remember much of what happened in the movie. That's how unmemorable it was. I remember hating all of the characters.

She didn't die in the fire in the movie. She died prior to the fire. The fire was to prevent the morgue from knocking down a wall of their house to remove her body. They didn't want the neighbors to stare.

Yeah, that's around when a lot of obese people start to drop like flies. My obese co-worker was around 55 when he started getting a lot of health problems directly related to his weight. I figure he'll make it to 65 and die of a heart attack/stroke/aneurism.
