Why would I want to listen to a bunch of 10 second snippets of songs when I can just use Pandora that plays the whole song for free?

So I entered in Minus The Bear, and they suggested Mastodon...because, you know, they are very similar.

Yes I happen to like both bands, but that's beside the point.

I entered Titus Andronicus, and it gave me a bunch of Latin Jazz.

Pandora doesn't work for me outside of the states (military family in Spain), so using this to discover other music is welcome to me.

Meh. It's more entertaining to choose music based on album cover similarities. For example:

If you like this:

You might like this:

Subby is easily entertained.

Subby hasn't heard of Spotify* yet?

Then again, one of the David Hasselhoff suggestions was Milla Jovovich.

I had no idea she even sang, and from a quick youtube search, turns out she sings pretty well.

I would recommend Spotify if you haven't tried it yet. It has a radio mode like Pandora, but if you like a song you can click and then listen to the whole album. You can also scrub back and forth through songs which Pandora doesn't let you do. You can also see what your friends are listening to and send them songs.

The only thing it really needs is thumbs up and down for its radio station, but other than that it's far and away better than Pandora.

And yeah subby, get with it.

Well, out of curiosity I entered in Cannibal Corpse, and was also suggested Mastodon.

What is this? 6 Degrees of Mastadon?

I'm gonna enter Mastadon...let's see what happens. If I'm not back in 6 minutes, just...well nothing really.

Wow. It looks like it's keyword based rather than having anything to do with the music content whatsoever.

Keyword: Walt Jizzney
Results: Walter Trout, Buddy Guy, Dion, etc....

Keyword: Les Beats Bien (yes i like French Chillout, what of it?)
Results: Les Belles Musettes, Los Kiyos, Luiz Rizzo...

LOL WUT

Meh. (C'mon Subs!)

I love music, and Spotify DELIVERS on every possible need I have in that regard. Including finding new music. Worth every penny of the 9.99 a month (I'd pay 20).

Spotify users, do I need a FB account to use? I tried activating a Spotify app on my Android and it asked for my FB account informaiton, of which I dont have. As I do not have FB. Will this be the same if I try and enroll through the interwebs? Cant access at work but would like to know for later today.

shiatty thing about Spotify is that the artists only get paid per-stream, which is like .029 cents a stream or somesuch. Not a good revenue stream to be sure.

You can create a spotify login. The FB thing is so you can spam all your friends or they can spam you with what they are currently listening to.

CalamitousCrasher: I entered Fugazi and it shows results for the Fugees. That's just dumb.

"I bought the Fugees CD... Whenever that, whenever it... Whenever it came out and I, I had to pick Zach up from the airport once and I said Zach do you wanna listen... Listen to this new rap group the Fugees? He's like "yeah" and I didn't think he'd like it 'cause he don't like anything. He loved it. He loved it. It was the first thing in a long time that he and I were agreed on, it was a moment that I wish had lasted forever but it only lasted 'til the end of the song, he didn't like the other ones. So we only really... The only thing that we really bonded on so far, the last few years, is that one Fugees song. I don't even know the name of it... I like all their songs."

Anyway, eMusic gets a thumbs down. It gave me multiple GbV songs with solo and side-projects when I searched for GbV, and it gave me classical piano music when I searched for Pavement.

quickdraw: Why would I want to listen to a bunch of 10 second snippets of songs when I can just use Pandora that plays the whole song for free?

This seems like a decent way to find a large selection of similar artists, if Pandora isn't available to you (which it is not for most people). I've used Grooveshark and Slacker in the past to sample new artists and albums, but they're not as efficient in finding similar artists.

As an aside, I'm really very tired of hearing live performances in my internet radio. They're always poorer quality than a studio performance and the screaming, singing crowds ruin the songs. I can understand there's an energy to seeing a band live, and many play songs that they don't record in the studio, but the experience loses a lot in the recording. I really wish sites would flag them as live, then give users a toggle to filter them out completely if they so choose.

2012-08-11 12:10:08 AM
Heh. It would seem that they need to do a little better at picking up the artist's wikipedia page for the site's entry of that artist.

OP, you've given me a way to find great indie music without having to talk to insufferable people. So sexy of you, thanks.

Yeah besides her other musical forays, she did some Puscifer with Maynard James Keenan of TOOL/APC which was a fairly interesting mashup.

I tried to type a few things into this engine and it returned some very strange nonsensical results.
On a whim I decided to hit something completely left field and the results it gave me for "Prussian Blue" were a bit of an amusing set of Mogwai/Shoegazer/Ambient haha

BTW... started using Songza yesterday... fook pandora and other music sites.. songza is amazing :)

Pere Ubu is like: Motorhead, Captain Beefheart, Lou Reed, Roxy Music, The Cure, Grinderman, Ornette Coleman, & Iggy Pop?

Huh.

I fondly remember eMusic from back when I was a member. Before they took on the RIAA labels and started screwing people with no grease. The way their loyal customers jumped ship, I figured they'd be tits-up by now.

I typed in Kraftwerk and among the "related artists" was Lou Reed....really? I'm thinking this whole thing is still in development, right?
