Sign me up.

I'd love a good stout to go with lunch to offset the cold, damp winter in Oregon, and something more refreshing in the summer. Maybe one of the milder IPAs.

But I know it would take just one asshole to get drunk at work and feel up the receptionist to make this plan impossible.

Booze fueled creativity is why I'm now fixing somebody else's project. Goddamned non-functioning alcoholics have no business drinking on the job.

I used to work for the government in a research lab. Until just a year or so before I left, it was still legal for government employees to drink on the job. One guy I worked with kept a bottle of gin in his desk and started drinking as soon as he arrived at work. By the end of the day, he was pretty much hammered. Amazingly, he was still very good at his job and productive. Not me. I get a few drinks in me and work is the last thing I want to do.

as a law clerk in new orleans, the world can rest assured that there is at least one place in america that has no problems with drinking on the business lunch.

/ I bring my own lunch, and I don't go out, because I'd rather work that hour and go home a little earlier.

Who said anything about being shiat-faced? Why does an American having a drink with lunch = shiat-faced?

This is why pregnant women in other countries can have a small drink now and then while we are told FIRE WATER BAD. NO DRINKY!

Alcohol != shiat-faced or alcoholism. This is not that complex.

Either that or we Americans just have an international rep as the weakest drinkers.

started working for the federal government in the 80's - they had beer in vending machines in the halls. 75 cents for a 12 oz can of Bud and not a soul to card my delinquent self. good times, i think.

in the late 90's was working in NJ and a co-worker would get hammered at lunch, it made him tolerable because i would keep pace.

I'm a light weight. Half a gin fizz and I'm looped. But you're probably right. I assume many of the skyscrapers back in the day, when drinking was less of an evil, were built by workers who were not all stone sober. Had a few beers at lunch, a few laughs, or else came in with a raging hangover to 45 stories above the city.
I drink at work but only because I have to, as it makes kicking the bums outta the boxcars easier.

Worked most of my career in Glasgow, Scotland - three pints (and not Coors Light shiat either) at lunch was considered OK and being half pissed at one's desk a basic human right. Every Friday we knocked off at 4:30 and drunk wine until 5:00 (our official leaving time) - it did wonders for team building and I very much miss that sort of culture.

No one drove home drunk, ever, and no one's work was affected badly either. That's what happens when you have a culture that doesn't view booze as evil Satan-sperm and treat adults like big boys and girls.

I bought a big bottle of Irish Death when I grabbed my lunch just prior to finding this thread. I guess that means I'm being proactive (shudder) at work.

(We usually wait until ~4 before we start drinking at my office)

Weird. The burger place by my office doesn't actually sell anything non-alcoholic to drink apart from water.

That might be what the talking heads on TV will judge people about but it isn't a law or anything. You can drink all you want when you're pregnant, just like women in other countries. You'll just have more busybodies giving you dirty looks, but that should make you even happier to do it! I hate those who try to run others' lives for them.

I can only get away with drinking on the job when I'm at lunch with a client for some reason.

Apparently I can't bring a 6'er to work because god forbid someone (like a client) might see me drinking at my desk.

We used to drink at the shop back when i was a motorcycle mechanic, until some uptight client saw made a stink about it. "Never loaded, and no beer before lunch" was in the employee handbook.
