Technically, the person would weigh more. Platinum, along with other precious metals, is weighed on the troy system. A troy pound is 12 troy ounces, and each troy ounce is 480 grains, making a total of 5760 grains to the pound of gold.

People are weight use pounds and ounces from the avoirdupois system. An avoirdupois pound is made up of 16 ounces, where each ounce is 437.5 grains, making a total of 7000 grains to the pound of person.

As much as I don't understand conservatives and evangelicalism, I really don't understand the Hippie fascination for religious India. For all talk of spirituality, what is up with the worship of a 175 pound leader and the quest for his weight in platinum? Not to mention Baghwan Rashneesh and all those Rolls Royces in Oregon.

/I do understand and practice transcendental meditation, it has nothing to do with religion, and the technique works each time. But India religions and gurus, Lord have mercy!

Ah, this is where you are wrong grasshopper. For the swami is 175 lbs. but he is 175 HOVERING pounds. Which weighs less than nothing. Come back to me when you can snatch this pebble out of my hand, or with a fresh martini, either/or I'm not picky.

I do. Not the recently founded, centered on one person pseudo-Hinduism like this, but a tradition that has been around for 5000+ years and is followed by a billion+ (inc. Buddhism, Jainism...) is doing something right.

These guys sound about as "Hindu" as Fred Phelps is "Christian." They are in a nitpicky sense, but I think they appeal to a pretty small portion of the tradition.

There it is. I never even heard of this mukti baba or whoever. And a baba is chump change for Hindus, we have over a million gods to pray. Like literally, if you go by hindu scriptures, we have 330 million gods. These baba's show up now and then but nobody cares.

But the fun part is that he would weigh less if both he and the platinum were stated in "ounces".

The troy oz is heavier than the avoirdupois ounce. But since there's only 12 troy oz in a troy lb vs 16 avoirdupois oz for the avoirdupois lb, the troy lb is lighter than the avoirdupois lb.

i don't understand why you would.

i really don't understand why anyone would care if you did. I mean is there going to be an open bar afterwards or something?

I've always wanted to build standard looking weights out of platinum or osmium. You know, a "45" pound plate that actually weighs more like 150, and sneak them into a gym.

The platinum, officials of the temple told The Jersey Journal, is owned by a Canadian company.

Obvious attempt to curry favor with India.

The spiritual leader weighs more. Only because it's full of bullshiat.

Google isn't helping me figure out what the overall plan here is. One article said "The amount gathered with this will be donated in the welfare of the people." Supposed to be worth $5M.

Perhaps something was lost in translation but "the welfare of the people" sounds ominously vague to me.

Well I assume they're not giving poor people platinum directly. The Cash4Gold people will pay them like $20 an ounce.

One thing I'd noted about religious charities is they often seem to solicit donations FROM the poor to fund their charities FOR the poor, which is kinda ironic.

The platinum weighs more. Why? Because the Hindu spiritual leader didn't even touch the scale.

In a good system your organization would be able to combine those contributions to build needed things or buy at wholesale. But as it is most charities have a 40-50% overhead. I saw one of them bragging about "over 80% of your money goes to help the children." I guess the other 20% goes to commercials and camera crews.

Reminds me of Tim Minchin from his Storm bit:

And fine, if you wish to
Glorify Krishna and Vishnu
In a post-colonial, condescending
Bottled-up and labeled kind of way
Then whatever, that's ok.
But here's what gives me a hard-on:
I am a tiny, insignificant, ignorant lump of carbon.
I have one life, and it is short
And unimportant...
But thanks to recent scientific advances
I get to live twice as long
As my great great great great uncleses and auntses.
Twice as long to live this life of mine
Twice as long to love this wife of mine
Twice as many years of friends and wine
