Now just waiting for Walt to get a Tea Party endorsement for state rep and my prognosticating's complete.

Not so much. 5th paragraph:

However, in a new post this morning, Kalamazoo Gazette reporter Rosemary Parker says she spoke with the media relations manager for the Stampede, and had been told the report was false.

"I have not been made aware of anything like that," Doug Fraser told Parker.

Since when do managers have a clue as to what's going on?

Do they actually give out free Stampede tickets to random strangers? I'm a bit skeptical...

That's friggin' scary. If it happened south of the border, there would be two dead people and a cop thinking he's done God's good work.

'Thank God' this loon was prevented from bringing his handgun across the border!

No, I can

WhippingBoy: Do they actually give out free Stampede tickets to random strangers? I'm a bit skeptical...

No, I can see this, particularly if you look like the type to go for a novelty giant foam cowboy hat and a foam "NUMBER ONE!" finger on a stick. The kind of guy who might signal his preferences with a six-inch wide fish icon belt buckle.

Wouldn't offer a guy like that a vuvuzuela, though. Might mishear it and have a queer seizure.

I know of one. I was talking to him and this lady comes running up saying she saw some kids smoking weed somewhere by the shore. He said he'd get right on it. After she left he shrugged and said "the moment that becomes legal I'm going to quit drinking."
/he's a friend of my boss. Nice guy. First cop I've met that I wasn't immediately wary of.

Dear Michigan Cop,

I am also an American who is now living in Canada and yes their friendliness might be a bit shocking at first, but they are truly genuine. They may even walk up to you and give you directions if you look lost!

I know! Shocking! How dare they care about someone other than themselves and Jesus! But they were not blessed with being born in America.

Confusing article.

The reporter declaring it false is incorrect. Doug Frasier said he's not aware of it, not that it was untrue. There's a big difference in meanings there.

Watch the whole thing. Then we'll talk about the term "outlier" versus "institutional rot which leads to a severe mistrust of police officers in contemporary times".

Ask yourself if this the kind of person we should have running around with a gun "enforcing" the laws of the land and you will understand why some people care.

What is this Stampede? A concert? Some kind of rodeo? A sporting event? Or is it just literally a bunch of cattle going nuts and running in a random direction?

Certainly not in the middle of that park, where you have to make a bit of an effort to cross paths with someone. It sounded to me like two drunks about to start into some pressure panhandling. Stampede is a drunken, violent week. Not that guns are going to help anything, but I trust this guy's sense that it wasn't a friendly encounter.

Free tickets to Stampede events, not the Stampede itself. It's like going to the Super Bowl. You won't find anyone handing out tickets to the game but plenty of free tickets are floating around for "fan experience" parties. Even many college football games these days have a bunch of corporate sponsored events before and after the game. A big event like Stampede is likely the same.

STILL whining over one little handball non-call, I see.

Last I heard Stampedes weren't the thing to be in...

Plus, no one should be allowed to be a cop if they can't handle themselves/situations without a gun. That's how someone gets shot.

This is how big Nose Hill Park is:

Link

You're really not a very good mugger if you're gonna go way up in the middle of nowhere and roll passers-by on the off chance that one might possibly pass by. That park is massive.
On the off chance he was actually approached by a couple of ne'er-do-wells, there is a police station at the bottom right in the park, maybe he should have gone and filed a report with the police?
This guy is a proselytizing gun nut with an agenda. Nothing more.

I'm sorry, but most right-wing authoritarians have a tendency to overstate "danger". This guy, in particular, seems to be a giant hand-wringing bed-shiatting mommy-check-under-my-bed-for-demons type of fellow.

I'm sure it does Albertans good to think that they are "hardcore" during Stampede week, but come live out east sometime. Trailer Park Boys wasn't just a TV show, it's a way of life. Frankly, if you can't handle a little chatter from random strangers, I think you might just be a mewling pantywaist.

Certainly, to write a letter to the editor about it confirms that. Mixed with "old man yells at cloud" syndrome.

/to the poster above, you made a good point -- there's no way this guy should be allowed to have a firearm given his tenuous connection to reality.

2012-08-10 12:09:59 PM
Wow, I guess I missed this one the first time around. So let me see if I understand: Guy and his wife are walking in a park in the middle of Calgary, two guys "accost" them with some kind of promotion, and his first instinct is that he needs to pull his gun?

If this is your mindset, how the fark do you even get out your front door in the morning? Holy shiat, there might be a vacuum cleaner salesmen there you have to gun down! And just look at that guy dressed as Uncle Sam in front of the tax preparation place....OH GOD HE'S WAVING HIS SIGN AT ME!

Good grief people, calm the fark down already. Get your ass on some Prozac or Lexapro or Vicodin or something. Go tell your doctor that you thought about shooting the guy handing out free mozzarella sticks at Sam's Club and he will give you something to make it better.

WTF is Stampede? And is it as legit as a hoedown and/or hootin' annie?

Good lord I am thankful he didn't bring his gun. I can only imagine what would have happened at the free pancake breakfasts. As someone who lived in Calgary for a few years, the city may be ugly (too much mismashed 70's architecture ok Kennsington is beautiful) but the people are lovely.

The Calgary Stampede is a multiple-day event in which plastic cowboys from all over Alberta and abroad don their cowboy hats they bought at Winners and hop in their 'steel horses' (aka leased trucks), basically drink beer and eat meat (the only manly / legit part of the event) and watch as their heroes tie down calves with rope (takes a big man!) and ride big mammals for a few seconds.

After that, there's a whole bunch of commercial country music, face painting, and other diluted symbols of the American west, transplanted.

Overall, I am only interested in the meat and beer, and it's not like it's anything special.

2012-08-10 12:14:39 PM
Why were these guys pushing Stampede tickets in the first place?

"The denouement to the #NoseHillGentlemen story is this: the two guys were handing out free @CalgaryStampede passes," tweeted Calgary Cultural Ambassador Jenn Lutz late last night.

Oh, for the Lutz,

/the only reason anyone does anything

This. I have an uncle who nearly gets mugged every time he visits a city. I'm pretty sure the only thing that's happening is a black guy walking past him on the street.

Pretty much this. I live in BC and we're arch enemies of Calgarians (ok, maybe just the hockey teams are), but even I'll admit that Albertans are good people.

Watch the whole thing. Then we'll talk about the term "outlier" versus "institutional rot which leads to a severe mistrust of police officers in contemporary times".

Several things occur to me upon watching that video.

1. It exactly proves my point about defining a curve with outliers. By using single instances of abuse, it creates an emotional response an impression, but really does not say anything quantitatively about the typical or average interactions.
2. It presents these instances with no context or one sided context. Certainly some of them are abuses of power, but some of them are probably not, and are only presented as such by not presenting all sides of the case.

If you already believe that police are, across the board, corrupt and abusive, this video will confirm that. But really, it does not present any statistically significant data.

While I do think that police do abuse their power, and should be held accountable, I think that many of the times accusations are either false, or do take into account the context of the situation. I would press for more stringent reviews and harsher penalties to be put in place, but that those reviews not be performed by civilians or politicians, rather by people familiar with the working conditions of a standard LEO.

I know this is not a popular opinion on Fark and have been called a badge kisser many times, but I do think the police have a difficult job, and the US public's natural aversion to authority makes it more difficult and very polarizing.
