A spokeswoman for Virgin Australia this morning confirmed the policy and said while the airline did not want to offend male passengers, its priority was the safety of children.

And how are they safer sitting next to a woman? Don't they read all the stories about FEMALE teachers having sex with their boy students? Rarely is it a male teacher having sex with their boy student. Sexism at its finest. Grounds for a massive lawsuit too.

Hey... let's not get crazy and attack Virgin airlines here. In fact, good for them. I say they should expand on this policy and make it so that men don't get seated next to, in front or behind or anywhere near unaccompanied or accompanied children. Maybe other airlines should take notes.

Way to dehumanize all men, Virgin.

2012-08-10 10:59:27 AM
Yeah, because women are never abusive to children.

2012-08-10 11:01:09 AM
Most airlines have the same policy. It's not due to paranoid fears of pedos from the airlines. It's due to paranoid fears of pedos from parents.

2012-08-10 11:02:19 AM
The policy makes sense.

2012-08-10 11:03:12 AM
shiat, I'd pay extra to not sit next to any children.

/Still a shiatty move by Virgin
//I'd say it's offensive to assume someone is mentally ill based on their gender, but I'm married.

Meanwhile, I'll bet alleged pedophile Richard Branson, CEO of Virgin, gets to sit next to any young girls he wants to.

ah yes but what if the pedos undress the kids with their eyes? Clearly, no children on planes is the only solution.

So, you're telling me that, since I am I man, you will never, ever sit me next to unaccompanied children on a plane?

Where do I sign up? Can we get this in the US too?

2012-08-10 11:04:24 AM
And the demonizing of all men as potential child predators continues. As the father of an almost 2 year old daughter, I'm looking forward to all the crap looks I'll get for taking her to the park when she gets a little older.

Children should be stowed in the overhead compartment. Where its safe.

2012-08-10 11:05:24 AM
One: If there was a first-class seat open, they should have let this guy have it for publicly embarrassing him like that.

Two: What can I do to make sure I never have to sit next to a child on an airline again, unattended or otherwise?

2012-08-10 11:05:44 AM
Most pedophiles will probably breathe a sigh of relief because now they don't have to figure out how to get their unmarked vans aboard the flights.

I'm no fan of other people's kids, but the demonizing of males in general is becoming ridiculous. There has to be some MAJOR psychological damage done by teaching children to fear adult men universally.

I'd agree, except for the way they did it on this flight. Instead of sorting it out at the ticket desk, they told him to move after the plane had been boarded. You know, after all the good seats are taken, and the overheads are full. Sod that for a game of soldiers!

2012-08-10 11:08:36 AM
Mr McGirr said the attendant then asked a fellow female passenger, "Can you please sit in this seat because he is not allowed to sit next to minors."

if that is indeed true (and i suspect it is) the attendant needs to be cockpunched repeatedly. that is way more than just poor phrasing.

Has anyone, ever, actually molested a child mid-flight?

It's not fun. I take my kids to the park on the regular basis. The first thing they do, of course, is take off and play on the swings, etc, leaving me standing or sitting by myself. On more than one occasion I've had someone come up to me and ask what business I had being there (one time I had to call my kids over in order to "prove" that I wasn't alone). If it's not that, I'll notice people staring intently at me (I'm sure they've got "9-1" pre-dialed on their phone). Never seen the "solitary" women treated this way...

2012-08-10 11:09:44 AM
Sheesh, you people with your "demonizing all men". Don't you understand that this is necessary to protect the children? I mean, they're sitting right next to the guy, surrounded by hundreds of adults, checked every so often by the flight attendants, with buttons they can press to make loud dinging noises and draw the attention of everyone around them, and no exits or hiding places. Clearly, that's a recipe for child rape.

As a completely white male with bi-racial children I got those looks from day one. "Why's that ugly white guy got an Asian baby???"

So men can't sit next to unaccompanied children? That sounds like an unnecessary, ineffective measure that... ultimately doesn't hurt anyone. I DO NOT GIVE A DAMN.

If it's any consolation, from my experience you're more likely to get "awwwwwws" and possibly hit on. At least in there places I raised my children.

its safer to sit a woman next to children. woman teachers never sleep with their students, ever. Anyway, give me a seat with lots of leg room, away from children, or if i can't have that, keep bringing me booze.

2012-08-10 11:12:28 AM
Oh thank goodness. How inconvenient this would have been. I know that when I'm on a long, boring flight and the movie's not good, I prefer to pass the time by finger-blasting or jacking off an eight year old.

I approve of this message.

/ farking kids... they should have a cage in the belly of the plane for them.
// no offense to children... I was a child once. I just think it's appropriate. It's not like I remember anything from childhood, so what's the problem?

The solution is to put all children (especially colicky babies) in their own special sound-proofed and padded section of the plane. While we're at it, let's get a pig pen in the back to corral the fatties into. The flight attendants can periodically shovel slop into the pen to keep their hunger urges in check.

Sure, the insinuation that He was a pedo - in front of the other passengers - is a bit insulting.

But a "good seat", IMHO, is any seat away from someone's unaccompanied crotch droppings.

2012-08-10 11:15:37 AM
All you penny-ante purveyors of echo-chamber outrage take note... THIS is actual discrimination. If anything, children are probably more at risk sitting next to an extended relative.

steerforth: Most airlines have the same policy. It's not due to paranoid fears of pedos from the airlines. It's due to paranoid fears of pedos from parents.

Most likely, but if a parent is allegedly that concerned why are they letting their precious snowflake out into the big bad world by themselves at all? How do they know the airline employee watching their child isn't a pedophile? And airline employees have all kinds of access to rooms, closets, etc. in restricted areas where no one else will see...

I've found that unaccompanied children make for better passengers than... pretty much anyone else. They're out of their element and generally aren't in the mood to act up, since there is no one around whom they know will cater to their whims.

Apparently Nippon Airways doesn't have that policy.

I flew with them a few years ago across the globe and they sat me next to an unaccompanied male kid, and next to the kid was another adult male. We had a blast. The flight attendants were all super hot and at the end they thanked us for helping the kid with food and other non-sexual stuff.

In the end I would have preferred first class and some sleep though.

To be fair, the vast majority of people don't bat an eye... it's just that there's a few brainwashed idiots who have been taught that "men == bad" everywhere you go (small towns aren't exempt, unfortunately). It doesn't really bother me personally, but I am concerned about the message that the children are getting.
