Oh, hey, another "medical condition causes financial ruin" story.

Shoulda been boot-strappier and bought better insurance, I guess. Or have been lucky enough to be born rich, or in some other country.

In comics this would be a superpower. She'd be Armor Girl or something.

FTA:

Her state-issued insurance does not cover her out-of-state care and only covers five of the 17 medications she is prescribed.

She HAS government insurance, but it sounds like they don't cover her time with the John Hopkins specialists because they are out of state. See "state-issued?" She already has government insurance. It didn't help her.

So try again, socialist. Your promised system failed this time. The government death panel decided her problem was not worth funding.

Only common thread with these weird medical cases is there is nearly always mention of a fundraiser or other attempts to help the afflicted cope with their staggering medical bills. And this woman even had insurance. How can we live in a first world nation where people can go broke from being sick?

Did you see where nobody knows what the problem is? It's likely that any insurance would not be sufficient to cover her medical bills.

It sounds like the only possible cure is to set her on fire, and then work with what's left.

This sounds horrible.

She should have been born richer. And without that horrible disease. This is clearly her fault, and she and her family *should* be financially ruined to teach others a lesson about properly bootstrapping *before* their lives are ruined by horrible unknown incurable skin diseases.

Or that "her hair follicles produce ten times more skin than normal". Hair follices don't produce ANY skin.

Well, it looks like a terrible case of keratosis pilaris. That's keratin overgrowth, and causes "bumps" over a wide area and often caps off hair follices, leading to ingrown hairs. Which can get messy, the hair will continue to grow under the skin.

I think someone misspoke, and that the trapped hair was growing thick LIKE a nail, as in a hardware store nail.

Except that she hasn't got that. Or the tree-man disease. She apparently didn't have anything before the steroid treatment. It could be a weird condition called "hair-felting disease" where hairs suddenly become oddly shaped and clump together; but that only happens on the head, AFAIK.

Which reminds me of an occasional weirdness my facial hair likes to do. Sometimes I'll get these really thick hairs that take a while to grow out enough to be grabbed by tweezers and pulled out, and they come out either wrapped in a translucent sheath of flesh or leaving the sheath sticking out of the spot the hair was at until I pull it out as well, and usually with the root hanging off the bottom. The weirdest part, though, is they're never a single thick hair, but a bundle of hairs that are wide but flat like a sheet of paper, all layered in a round bundle. A lot of my other facial hairs aren't round but the same flat rectangular shape, but they don't give me problems.

/not as horrific as this woman's problem, but annoying and weird

In other first world countries her medical bills would be manageble regardless of where she needed to travel to get needed medical help. Just saying.
Stop distributing your tax money like a third world nation and you too could not suck.

My point exactly. Our current system is broken. Even when you do have insurance, it often comes with limitations. No pre-existing conditions, annual caps, restrictions on where you can be treated, etc. Should this poor young woman have just lived with her debilitating condition because she couldn't find help locally? If Johns Hopkins offered her the best chance for a cure then good on her for taking it.

Shanyna got fingered

2012-08-10 05:26:32 AM
But Isom's mysterious health crisis has caused a financial crisis.

Her state-issued insurance does not cover her out-of-state care and only covers five of the 17 medications she is prescribed.

"So we had to depend on the family and friends and different fundraisers and things like that to help me get back and forth," she said.

Those savings accounts have dried up.

Isom has a quarter of a million dollars in outstanding medical bills. She is afraid she won't be able to continue the treatment that could save her life.

Remind me again - while I enjoy my pinko-liberal-communist national healthcare over here - why y'all don't need universal healthcare provided by the government, as opposed to your current hodgepodge of sort-of-healtcare provided curtesy of people who's major concern is the bottom line and stcok holders?

2012-08-10 05:30:57 AM
To be fair, in Canada most provincial health plans don't cover out of province care. If you are from Ontario, and go to the ER in Alberta, it's 500$.

.....Still, 500$ to go to the ER isn't that bad if you are having some kind of horrible emergency.

//Your employer provided private insurance, however, usually covers out of province and even out of country coverage.
///And those 25$ monthly premiums for Blue Cross are a killer. (SARCASM)

Yes, that's what I was thinking. I have a mild form of this "chicken skin" (it's the Scot in me) and what she has does look just like it but worse.

Anyway, it's genetic, AND it's known to be comorbid with allergic conditions like hayfever and asthma, so it's unlikely it was actually caused by the steroids if that's what it is.

Gyrfalcon: Except that she hasn't got that.

"doctors there determined that she produces 12 times the number of skin cells per hair follicle, which is suffocating her skin"

Yeah... that's KP. There's no diagnostic test you can actually run to prove that's what it is. They look at it and go "huh, that looks like KP, so I guess you have KP" (oh, doctors and their fancy science!)

"The bumps in KP seem to arise from the excessive accumulation of keratin at the opening of individual hair follicles. The skin as examined under the microscope demonstrates mild thickening, hyperkeratosis, and plugging of the hair follicle."

Frankly I hope it's not what she's got because there's no cure or treatment.

That's called "pili multigemini". Despite authoritative-looking websites saying it is exceptionally rare, no, it seems very common for men to get one from shaving sooner or later.

They're freaky as hell, but kinda fascinating.

Had it happen several times, but never since I started the beard, so it's safe to say that shaving causes it. They don't grow back that way after being pulled out. I did have one that was apparently there when I started the beard, and it was freakishly long when I found it- well, the relevant observation being it won't go away on its own without plucking.

KP is quite common, but it doesn't normally look that severe, nor does it come on suddenly, later in life, as a reaction to a drug.
Well it's SIMILAR to KP but more severe. There's an overgrowth of keratin, but since the cause of even ordinary KP is not well understood, there's no way you can definitively say it's "the same thing".

From my experience with steroids, they are the greatest, most vile cure around. When you get a round of them, the fine print on the bottle mentions that steroids can take up to 6 months to clear your system, so be very careful being exposed to anything. Steroids, basically, are the re-set button for your immune system. They completely disrupt the current problem, so your body can heal, but then have the possibility of leaving the back door open for something even nastier to sneak in while you are recovering. That's what it sounds like happened to this poor woman.

I think I would be trying every known shaving, waxing, or depilation (sic) regimen, while the doctors are researching obscure bacteria and microbes. I would probably screw it up worse, but just looking at the pictures makes me want to scratch off layers of skin. This woman must have the patience of a saint to not be clawing at herself all the time.
