Men with balls of steel, and nine other events.

Maybe you could start with the other events and save the steel testicles for last. Or omit them entirely. Really, I won't mind.

For some stuff, like around joints, I can see it definitely working very well. Given that it's more flexible that traditional athletic tape, it would well around knees, shoulders etc. Other stuff? Yeah that would be a bit questionable.

I just had a disturbing thought.

*dons tinfoil hat*

What if Costas looks so bad because before they went on air he was informed that Ryan Seacrest would be the main face of Olympic primetime come the 2014 Winter Games?

2012-08-09 08:16:13 PM
Carrying this over from the tail end of the live thread:

So we make a big, huge deal of the introduction of women's boxing to the Olympics, and deservedly so, and particularly the first woman to win gold in women's boxing, Nicola Adams... but Adams is British, so NBC waited for the division where an American won and then ran that medal ceremony instead, outright saying that SHE'S the one who got the first medal as opposed to Adams and.

This is almost getting into the realm of propaganda now.

Seacrest has already consumed the souls of Casey Kasem and Dick Clark. Costas has every reason to worry. He at least wants to qualify for the Quickening.

I was watching it too. They gave five seconds to Adams' ceremony, then kept going 'FIRST! FIRST! FIRST! SHE'S THE FIRST ONE!' when the American won, making little to no mention of what exactly they meant by 'first' (namely, the first American). If you weren't paying attention, you'd get every impression that America got the first gold instead of Britain.

Jumpers tend to specialize early. Not because of need but because it's just what they want to do. You do find a lot of sprinter and long jumper combos in high school, also some who also do the triple jump. In college you find a handful of sprinters and long jumpers, but at the college level triple jumpers are pretty much just triple jumpers unless they also do the long jump, like Claye.

That's fair enough. But NBC is sort of stuck - often in order to create compelling drama, they need to give us a plotline, and show us the longer process of how we get to the medal stand. You need to tell the story. If you just go medal to medal to medal, you sacrifice depth for width. Tough call.

DamnYankees: That's fair enough. But NBC is sort of stuck - often in order to create compelling drama, they need to give us a plotline, and show us the longer process of how we get to the medal stand. You need to tell the story. If you just go medal to medal to medal, you sacrifice depth for width. Tough call.

yeah, but the womens high dive doesn't even have any of the US folks in it. i enjoyed watching things like badmitten, archery and other non US medal sports on the alt channels when i was working from home (or streaming.) I cheered for that kenyan dude like he was the americanist american who ever america'd. But like, why time delay something where the US isn't even in the finals on a day when the US won gold in 2 sports? and of all the sports, why diving (where its assumed china will win unless a special circumstance happens?) at least pick a sport where an undergod/interest wins?

just throwing it up there with a "hey guess what, that nation that usually sweeps these medals did that, here's 20 seconds of the Us womens team in water polo" is kind of annoying for the primetime coverage

there's a reason it's called DIVING and not cannonballing.

And then there was Stephan Feck's painful attempt to create a new "Reverse Water Planking" division of the sport. A diving style only for the tough and fearless.

I did that once off the top of a 150 foot salmon processor, once in the Bering Sea right after the ice broke enough to swim, probably at least 60 feet up on that second dive and the metal was wet and I slipped trying to push off hard enough to clear the deck below. Seeing the red painted side of the hull pass behind my head right before impact felt good, I knew I wasn't gonna splat onto the deck... it was the last thing that felt good for a few days.

Earguy: Does a wind that could occur in the floor of a bowled stadium really make a difference in the triple jump?

Well as far as the rules are concerned it does. If the wind is above 2.0 meters per second and you jump beyond the Olympic or world record distance, it only counts as the longest jump but not the official record. Also if it's a crosswind it doesn't take much to start pushing you sideways which makes the triple jump oh so fun.

It's interesting to me that more unusually tall people like bolt don't compete in (running) track events. It would seem that they'd be really good at it, considering stride length and all, especially for sprinters. I remember running at FSU against this English guy named Luke Beevor who was like 6'10" or something ridiculous, and he was pretty damn quick because of his gargantuan strides. Ran like a low 14s 5000m or something.

tlchwi02: 10 feet per stride, holy crap

Eh, I'm a horrible runner, but being 6'6" allows me to take massive strides to cover ground better. I remember playing football and taking three to four strides to cover ten yards at full run. I think they are blowing the length of his stride out of proportion. He's tall with long legs, as long as he runs halfway right he is obviously going to cover a lot more ground with each stride.

Dude. You are on the internet. Have you heard people talk about Expat Shield or bbc.co.uk? There are options within these very United States believe it or not.

I'm fully aware of streaming. I just don't agree with the need to to watch low res events on my machine instead of in HD on my cable provider.

Yeah, he often seems to pull up at the end. On this one he looked to his left, seemed like he knew he would win, and it slowed him. If he just ran his race against the clock, instead of being satisfied with being in first, he'd shave another quarter-second off his time.

Oh, and as long as am spoiling. American Mitchell ran the 4x400m relay with broken leg

"I got out pretty slow, but I picked it up and when I got to the 100-metre mark it felt weird. As soon as I took the first step past the 200-metrr mark, I felt it break. I heard it. I even put out a little war cry, but the crowd was so loud you couldn't hear it," Mitchell said.

"I knew if I finished strong we could still get it (the baton) around. I saw Josh Mance motioning me in for me to hand it off to him, which lifted me. I didn't want to let those three guys down, or the team down, so I just ran on it. It hurt so bad."

rka: Probably the next time we see him push it will be when he starts coming in 2nd or 3rd as father time catches up with him.

Next year's world championship. I think he just wanted to get the double in the Olympics over with and wasn't going to worry about the actual times. Next year, he may well just floor it again.

not really, stop fooling yourself... a lot of people with long legs while have longer strides are slower in rotation BUT Bolt is one of those very rare human being that has both the stride and quick physiology of a sprinter which is why he is what he is. In this country, a guy that big and fast would have a football in his hands by the time he hit middle school. Not as much glory in track as in other countries.

not really, stop fooling yourself... a lot of people with long legs while have longer strides are slower in rotation BUT Bolt is one of those very rare human being that has both the stride and quick physiology of a sprinter which is why he is what he is. This is why long distance folks are usually tall lanky types with long legs but sprinters are shorter muscular type. Shorter legs also builds up power and speed much faster.. like 1st gear compared to say 5th gear in automobile speak. Bolt being the genetic freak has both!

it's just kinematics.

I'm not seeing how what you posted contradicts what I posted :/

He was saying taller people with longer legs tend to not move their legs as quickly or powerfully as the more compact sprinters. A point I also tried to make but didn't fully spell out. I'm tall and have a stride length similar to bolts, but am nowhere near as fast, stride length isn't as big an impact as the announcers were making it (guy who finished second in the 100 had more strides than the 3rd place finisher, for example). Bolts advantage is that he has the sprinter quick movement paired with the long legs and lanky frame that goes with it.

All that may be true, but it's more or less orthogonal to the point I was making, which is that a guy with those sorts of skills would have been steered into football or basketball in this country, rather than track. 6'5" with world-class speed? That's a wide receiver, not a sprinter.

Check out the 60m dash, a lot of 100m runners never run it because they can't accelerate fast enough to be any good. And the top 60m runners tend to be short and at least a bit stocky.

Bmx
Synchro swimming
Dressage
Any other equestrian sports

And to be added:
Hot female athletes wrestling in viscous fluid (fluid tbd later)
Pole dancing

Any others for either list?

It's funny to think that until 2008 every coach but Bolt's would've told you there's no way a 6'5" guy could be a world class sprinter. Back earlier Jan Zelezny, the greatest javelin thrower ever, was told he was too small to be a good javelin thrower so at 17 he had no choice but to coach himself when it came time to move up in age groups and none of the coaches wanted to coach him because of his size.

No, because usually gymnasts are world class (read: really fkn good) at at least one of the events. Decathletes may or may not be.

No doubt, but it's hard to do both well, unless you're Bob Hayes or Willie Gault. I'm not trying to slight sprinters, but I think it's true that more kids in this country grow up dreaming of winning the Superbowl than setting a WR in the 100. Just a cultural thing.

Oh, I misunderstood you. I thought you meant like how Raisman won individual gold in the floor exercise and also contributed to the team gold.

There's a few variables that play into it. One is that I'm a runner, and I know exactly what's going on in things like the 1500m. How hard (or not hard)it is to run what the decathletes run, etc...consider that any reasonably good high school distance runner can run a 4:22 1500m, the winning time just now. Conversely, I have no fkn clue what goes on in
gymnastics, and quite truthfully, I'm not a big fan of any sport that involves subjective scoring. I don't know what a 16.5 floor exercise score means like I know what a 3:43 mile means. Anyway, decath just doesn't excite me as much. I know that's open to criticism, though.

I don't even watch that much football but Terrell Owens, Randy Moss, and Megatron are all at least 6' 3" which is close to Bolt's height, and all are insanely fast guys, or were when they were younger. Some guys stayed with football, some didn't like getting hit and stayed with track, but don;t pretend "most" wide receivers are short. D-backs are short, but WR's and Safety's are usually all at least 6'2" or taller these days.

Yup. Long and triple jump as well as distance running. It would be REAL tough to argue there has ever been a greater dynasty in any sport that tops what Arkansas track did for a good 15-20 years. It got the the point, if the Hogs didn't win a national championship, it was big news. Once in a while Arkansas would get a sprinter or a discus thrower or something and kick even more ass.

Alas John McDonnell retired in 2008 and Arkansas has had to start over. I don't don't think anything like that will ever happen again.

Sometimes there are people out there who would be world class athletes at something, but just never find it out. Then there are those who find it out just in time. Mark McGuire is a poor choice, as he was playing for years before he started juicing, and went from really good to extremely questionable at a time when most players hitting would be in decline instead of increasing.
