Having seen may of these happen - I've never seen a JW opt out of an assignment. They will bow out of a number of social or political practices (the pledge, pep rallies, birthday/holiday celebrations, etc). But I've never seen any of them dodge an assignment.

The big controversy about prayer in school has been about school-sponsored prayer, such as requiring students to listen or participate in prayers mandated by the school. The individual right to pray has always been there, which is evidenced by the large number of religious clubs at schools, where outside of class time they can pray or chant or do whatever the hell they want.

If the parents really have a problem with it, let them opt out of something and assign something else. Its either going to be on the all important standardized tests or it won't and they can be measured that way. Otherwise, they go to private and home schools which sabotages the success of public schools in general.

I opted out of the pledge in school. Not for any religious reasons, just think it is a ridiculous practice. This was in Kansas and no one ever said anything negative to me about it. Don't really see why they need a law for this.

I say this is fine but they have to bring in a signed and notarized letter from Jesus.

This reminds me I saw a Muslim woman driving a car with the optional "In God We Trust" sticker ($1 and placed over where the country name would usually be) on her Georgia plates yesterday. It surprised me, but it really is the same thing. I don't think our state's fundies had that in mind when they came out with it.
