Nhojwolfe: First off Congrats to Canada for its silver medal in Ladys soccer.

second off, Each call is subjective and can be seen many ways by many different people. That is why we have refs. Its there job to choose what is right and what is wrong. If they miss a callthey miss a call. If they think it was a hand ball, it was a hand ball. Its part of the game. The end goal is to end up with more points than the other team.

I need to correct myself Bronze medal

You're not serious, are you? I think her 158 international goals is pretty hard to beat.

I think it's a pretty common sentiment among the international football community that Sinclair is the greatest active player, and is considered by some the GOAT, although it's hard to name any active player as such.

158 (in 275) is pretty hard to beat, but 143 (in 190) isn't that far off, especially considering Christine is only 29. I'm not sure how many competitive games are played in the run-up/qualifying for WWC and Rio, but 15 goals doesn't seem out of reach. Hell, Abby Wambach (a pure finisher, and tied w/ Sinclair at 143 (in 187)) is likely to overtake Mia in goals, although probably not in GOAT rankings.

/Plus, she won a National Championship for her dying coach, who succumbed to cancer a few months afterwards. Beat that, Mia and your all-star Tar Heels! :P

Congrats to Kaylyn Kyle for being hot!

I congratulate Kaylyn Kyle for having the sense to GTFO of the way when Matheson made that shot. Kyle was in an offside position by miles and the ball missed deflecting off her by inches.

Wambach and the cutie Morgan really impressed me. The former seems a certainty to overtake Hamm. As for Morgan, is she much of a scorer or is she more the set-up gal? She seems like her skills would make her a good winger (she runs right at defender and is crafty on the ball).

Yeah, after the crap they pulled against the US Women, and the crap they pulled in the media after the game, how anyone can root for Canada in futbol la femme is beyond me. Well, I guess they were playing farking France, but still...

Yes, I guess telling the truth about a completely bs call that led to the tying goal is wrong these days...

//Cheering for Canada

Which completely BS call? The blatant Handling call, or the obvious Delay call against their goalie (for which she'd already been warned several times)? Because we can balance them out with the refs-didn't-see-it violence the Canadians were doing (head-stomping, punching and the like) to try and "win." Hey, if you're outskilled and outclassed, try to rough them up, right? How'd that work for you.

Warned by who, the 4th official at the half? Only counts when the actual Ref does it. of the Blatant Handling? Handling? I'm I supposed to infer from your bastardization of the actual call you are trying to be sarcastic? Or are you actually the moran you seem to be trying to pretend to be? The Americans won and you are still this butthurt?!? Get a farkin' Life! no let me fix that... Get a non-farkin' life.

redmid17: Anonimoose On the Loose: ReluctantPaladin: change1211: damnproud1388: change1211: No shortage of Americans being assholes in here I see. Not really a surprise...

Serious question though for those in the soccer know. I caught the last 10 minutes of the US-Japan match today and the american goalkeeper had the ball on the ground. (US up by one) I started counting as she got to her feet...now they cut away to a replay of a near goal and when they came back she had the ball on the ground and was just kicking it forward, after I got to 13.

My question is, given the 6 second rule that Canada got penalized for, when does the 6 seconds stop? Is it when she releases the ball from her hands (either pitching it ahead, or placing it on the turf in front of her) or is it when she moves the ball forward?

I don't really know enough about soccer to say whether that should have been a free kick, or a warning or whatever, I just thought it would have been ironic if the Americans got the same call against that they got for them when they played Canada.

Noticed the same thing. Have the same question.

It's kind of subjective, but the counting stops when she starts the motion to release the ball 99% of the time (punt or throw). When I was a ref, I started counting when they got control of the ball, either on the ground or in the air. You're not allowed to just lay on the ball for awhile and get up when you feel like it. The parts of the game I saw today the US keeper had the ball for longer than 6 seconds, which is not uncommon, but it wasn't uncontested for that long. Basically the 6 second rule is gonna be violated a large percentage of the time, but it's not grossly over run. 8 seconds is common, but 10 is really, really pushing it. The canadian keeper was at 16+ 3 different times when she wasn't crowded around by US players. If you're not making an effort to release the ball, the ref is going to notice. The center should have warned her earlier, and frankly, should have warne ...

Thanks, like I said I don't know much about the rules. I had seen you saw in other threads the bit about the 16+ x 3. I only saw the last 10-15 minutes today so I don't know what the goalkeeper was doing for the whole match. I just thought it was funny cause the only time I decided to count (to see exactly HOW FAST 6 seconds was) it was 13 seconds (rewinded PVR and confirmed it). But also they were showing a replay so I can't say what she was doing during that point so I wasn't ready to start screaming "Ameri-CHEATS".

/although I did see one of the US mouthing off about a yellow card in dying moments of todays game

Also, for the 6-seconds rule: If you're a good ref, you warn the goalie THAT PLAY. You don't warn them earlier and then go silent in the dying moments of a game with the team up 1. At the 4-5 second mark, you tell that goalie that he/she is close to the max. time allowed.

Anywho, maybe I'm talking out my patoot. Good on the ladies for bringing home the bronze and good luck to Japan :P

Good on the Canadians for winning! We didn't deserve it in the least, but France couldn't put the ball in the back of the net and Canada did. On a play that I think should be called Offside, but I'm about the only one who's brought it up and it's been quite extensively explained to me. France outplayed Canada all game long, and had complete control of the midfield, which normally means a victory. they just couldn't get that final touch; it's a shame they lost, and a tip of the hat to the French team for playing a very good game.

/I'm rather old school about my soccer, and I like my offsides and my hand balls to be unambiguous again. When I played, if I was behind the other teams defenders when the ball came forward, I was offside. Didn't matter if I was on the other side of the pitch chasing a butterfly, the play was offside. For a handball, if the ball touched my hand or arm, it was a handball. Didn't matter if it was intentional or not, or if I was protecting my nutsack - it was a handball. Also, if I wrapped both arms around an opposing player and tried to pull them away from the ball, I'd get a yellow card.
//Now, it's all subjective. Ball hits someones hand in the 18 box, sometimes it's a penalty kick (like for the USA against Canada), sometimes it's ignored (like for Japan against the USA). Sometimes you can Suh stomp on someones head (like Canada against the USA), and the next game someone can arm tackle a player in the 18 with the same result (like the USA against Japan).

If we've learned one thing from this experience, it's that head-stomping and crap calls by the ref both make soccer considerably more interesting.

As for Alex Morgan saying they wanted to win more, that was a dumb thing to say.
Both teams wanted to win, one team doesn't always have to want it more.

She was in the right place to head it at the right time. That is all.

Anyone see her in the Japan game? She had two chances to pass to teammates
in scoring pos, and she shot both times and missed.

Ball hogs don't impress me. She has a lot of growing up to do.

That we would easily hand them a W everytime we play them.

#1, she's 23. She has plenty of time to grow up.

#2, she led the tournament in assists, including a gorgeous setup of Lloyd's first goal.

#3, she was actually told by Wambach before the Canada match that she has to be more assertive and look to score more often.

I think she'll turn out just fine.
