I would have been like "Hey, free gun!"

Plus, it was in .308 Winchester (the civilian designation for 7.62x51mm NATO), a very common deer caliber, so not only is it a decent social rifle, you can also use it for hunting deer and black bear, so long as you just use reduced-capacity magazines when hunting. It would probably make an excellent deep woods/swamp deer gun.

That pic looks like it was taken in his pantry.

That's a terrible place to put a SIG716. It's an even worse place to put a television.

Think about it.

So, you take that down to any big box store, whip it out and get several free tvs.

What is the problem?

"I definitely knew it was a mistake," he said.

LOL. No slipping anything past this guy!

Duh, you use the rifle to rob the Best Buy!

With gun nuts it would be like a new gold grill for a gang banger, or a new breast enlargement for Snooki.

OK, but they didn't misuse it. The Sig 716 is an assault rifle.

You pretty much covered everything I was going to say.

The group enjoyed a potluck dinner with a North African and Mediterranean theme - the evening's conversation enlivened by the surprise parcel. Horvitz, his wife and their friends stared at the gun, regarding it as a museum piece from an exotic culture.

Farking intellectuals.

It was a farked up order. Not some newly discovered ancient talisman forged by forgotten gods.

Man, the NRA is getting crafty with their desire for every citizen to be armed.

For less than $400, he got a massively good deal on the rifle.

NBC's probably jealous of the gun's Neilson ratings.

Well the DC police have it now. It's probably in one of their homes after being "melted down."

vpb: TheYeti: Everyone drink every time someone in the media misuses "assault rifle."

OK, but they didn't misuse it. The Sig 716 is an assault rifle.

Yes they did misuse it.

The term "assault rifle" has a very specific meaning, and that one fails at least two categories.

An "assault rifle", by definition:

1. Is select fire, capable of both semiautomatic and some form of fully-automatic fire.
2. Fires an intermediate rifle cartridge.
3. Has to use a removable magazine.
4. Must be generally fired from the shoulder.

The SIG-716, as legal in the United States, has to be semi-automatic. Why? Because it was introduced in 2011, and actual machine guns produced after 1986 are prohibited for private ownership.

Also, the .308 Winchester/7.62x51mm NATO round isn't an intermediate cartridge: It's a full power cartridge.

Thus, the SIG-716 is actually not an assault rifle, but it could be classified as a battle rifle, as the requirement for full-automatic fire capability there isn't as absolute as with assault rifles, because of control issues.

Another appropriate term would have been "assault weapon", which is generally defined as any gun with a vaguely military appearance.

give a man a tv, and he has one tv. give a man a gun and he has tvs for a lifetime.

Well, a deer rifle is for hunting deer, so a social rifle is obviously for hunting socialists.

This was on NPR yesterday evening. When I heard the guy talk about it all I could think was "what a pussy". He was whining about how he had small kids and oh dear jesus what an outrage that he had a weapon in the hope. Apparently he isn't aware of the concept of ammunition. His kitchen knives are a far bigger danger to his kids than an unloaded gun.

Amazon doesn't sell guns. This sounds like a UPS screw-up that is only tangentially related to Amazon.

Get a $1500 rifle instead of a $350 TV? Where do I sign up?

For what reason has Mr. Horvitz not yet been arrested for unlawful possession of an "assault weapon" in the District of Columbia?

Saw this on the local news, went nuts
SIGs are expensive, great guns!

but this turd certainly didn't look like the type to know what end the bullet came out of
..and The local yokels had to toe the line after the media got wind of it.

sad..sad day

How did this even happen? Not like you can just order a Sig from Amazon.

/Amazon doesn't mess up my orders like that.
//Best mess up I got from them was a free pair of crappy earphones.

But good thing they did this: " (and made another call, for good measure, bringing the matter to the attention of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence)"... I'm not sure WHY they felt that was necessary as no actual violence occurred.

someone made a shipping error that resulted in nothing happening.

Don't tell us, tell the DC Police, they're the ones who designated it as such.

If I got a SIG instead of a TV I'd consider it the best day ever. And probably never tell a soul.

So UPS farked up but everyone acts like Amazon accidentally shipped him a gun? Do they even sell guns? And the article makes it pretty clear that the gun was shipped by a gun store that was not Amazon.

It was handled through a 3rd party, amazon itself wasn't involved.

UPS delivered to the address on the box, right?

FTA: "But the box, which was addressed to him, seemed much too small."
