This is fraeking awesome, and let me tell you why:

1) You want to know what my music sounds like? Put down the PBR and pick up a f*cking guitar or piano and play it yourself.

2) Anyone who covers these song will have different sounding drums, keyboards, instruments, voices, etc., so we'll not only hear different variations, but perhaps on Youtube the best version of each song will float to the top, by both famous and non-famous bands/individuals.

3) Talk about old school. I love how he's reviving the method used by Mozart, Beethoven, and all great classical composers. More or less how folk music was, too.

4) "When necessary, ukulele notation."

/that is all

DeltaPunch: I love how he's reviving the method used by Mozart, Beethoven, and all great classical composers.

They did it that way because there was no other way. Considering the sort of egotistical hard-asses most Classical composers were, the idea they would eschew modern recording technology is absurd. "This! This is what I want you to sound like, you shiatty little excuses for musicians!" It's like hyping you built a house using only methods and tools available to pre-Republic Romans. Yes, they built like that, but if I went back in time with some power tools, said Romans would have quite happily used them - because they were not dog-farking morons. If you are serious about your little Luddite wankery, why not actually embrace it in its unglorious entirety? The Classical staff is a crutch for the mass-market mainstream dilettante who cannot understand True Music; Beck should sing his songs in a public place, and the only way it can be "sold" is via the memory of the listeners - anything else is a technological hindrance getting between the musician and the audience.

Only in the modern era do we long for the days when shiat was needlessly difficult and prone to error, because totally failing to use the Western idea of improvement for a better life is somehow seen as more pure. People trying not to die of dysentery managed to improve things, but also create a bunch of farkers determined to bring back the slit trench because it is "more authentic"

You know, when I'm upset, I write a song about it. Like when I wrote Devil's Haircut, I was feeling really... what's that song about?

I don't think you've thought this through. Do you really want even more d-bags walking around playing three different chords 24/7?

Perhaps he is ignorant of the simple fact that the vast majority of people do not have the necessary talent to play an instrument, even if they can read music. And of those that can play an instrument, most suck.

/I fall into the "can play but sucks" category

2012-08-09 04:26:25 AM
Part of the reason we buy music from artists is their ability to play some specific instrument. This is just pushing it, not everyone is piano/guitar/"music in general" proficient, thats the whole farking point of going to concerts, buying albums and the like, you are selling your talent along with your compositions, which usually wouldn't sell by themselves.

Interesting idea. Hopefully he does a definitive version of the songs eventually (either by himself or by conscripting musicians of choice) so all the people covering this album can see how close they were to the original intent.

Scott Pilgrim vrs. the World got me once again interested in Beck so I think I'll pick this up and try hamfisting through them.

I bet he is hoping some die-hard fan produces a great version of it, and he can collect royalties; multiple die-hard fans = multiple royalty sources, and if not, he can ban them from ever collecting on something he feels unworthy of his talent. (He already wrote it, he knows what it sounds like... his version; this is the essence you get when you hear reworked songs similar to how of STPs, metallica re-released tracks with variances off the originals, with alternate titles)

LewDux: And they call it music.

I'm not even gonna click, but BIG THANKS for the spoiler alert. ;)

It's totally out hipstering the hipsters. It's a Dawg, I heard you like being a hipster...

2012-08-09 08:16:36 AM
i think this is a wonderful concept. by not hearing the creating artist play the composition we are given works that are fully open to interpretation unimpeded. this is very clever. i think Frank Zappa would have loved this the most.

the last thing i saw Beck do was a syncopated rhythm musical sketch using a long dining table with formal setting. the objects on the table were used as instruments. it was awesome.

2012-08-09 08:18:38 AM
Whenever anyone starts talking about hipsters, it usually means that they are upset that younger people are having more fun than them.

2012-08-09 08:19:28 AM
I don't think any artist has ever fallen so far in my estimation over the years as Beck. Mellow Gold, Odelay, Mutations, and Midnite Vultures are classics. Sea Change isn't my favorite, but it's a lovely piece of work.... Guero and The Information are soulless retreads, Modern Guilt is garbage, and whatever he's doing now... is worse than garbage.

I know, he can wipe his tears with thousand-dollar bills when he reads this. Screw it. Beck sucks now. EVEN MOBY MAINTAINED SOME MINIMUM LEVEL OF QUALITY.

hipster is just spin-off of the general "attention whore" population, they never quite look happy or like they're actually having fun unless it somehow involves distracting people who are actually having fun and being happy

You can be a hipster's same age and still ridicule him all you want. Your post sounds like a douchey attempt to make fun of people older than you and make yourself feel better in the process. I'm not "upset" that they are "having more fun" when I mock certain hipsters; I genuinely think they're idiots.

And remember, every generation has hipsters. They're just called different things. Throughout time there's been good art that people just don't 'get,' and there's been pretentious bullsh*t that's objectively terrible but hoisted as genius due to the fashions of the time. As far as I'm concerned, Beck can do whatever the fark he wants. Dude is beyond reproach.

Notating your music is still the most effective way to keep record of what exactly it is that you've composed. There's a reason that the standard for it evolved, and is still being used after centuries... because it actually works, and works extremely well.

Haha, yes because Beck isn't pretentious bullshiat hoisted as genius due to the fashions at the time.

Beck and the Flaming Lips are transgressive and quirky to people who don't actually explore the different kinds of music that are out there. People that are all like OMG THIS IS SO DIFFERENT probably consider Radiohead to be avant garde.

Like, literally you're making fun of HIPSTERS because they are out there finding their own entertainment and rediscovering old ways while you're still being spoonfed entertainment like some old wasted hulk waiting to die in an old age home.

I never understood the Moby hate. His music isn't supposed to be edgy or ground-breaking. It's more like above-average background music and when approached as much, it's pretty good.

/anecdotal evidence - but nearly everyone I know who viscerally hates Moby is a self-important, sub-genre-spouting elitist douche

Please show me where I made fun of hipsters for "finding their own entertainment." If so, I must be making fun of myself, because none of my entertainment is spoon-fed to me. I seek what I like, not what someone tells me to enjoy. If that happens to include a commercially successful artist OH NOES. Jesus, listen to you.
