I wonder what kid in that district, with psychological needs not being met due to underfunding, will end up on Texasstan's death row in a few decades?

With all the money they're saving on school textbooks now that all they use is the bible, they can afford the important stuff like this stadium.

Anyone notice the comment linking the Cleveland Browns Stadium?

"This is what a $290 million high school stadium looks like"

Epic.

Happy Hours: $60 million on a stadium though? That's just crazy. I'd be surprised if the wooden bleachers where I attended high school even cost $5000 and it was a fairly well off school. To spend even $100,000 would be way over the top in my opinion. To spend 60 times that is absolutely insane.

You know how I can tell you played football and sucked at school?

...and the glorification of high school students continue in this country, soon it will become like the NCAA if this continues. I played for a high school team where we were in the lower classes (small schools), stadium only fit around 600-700 at the most, and the field was dusty most of the time. I appreciated that experience, and this is almost like the NFL for some of these schools.

This town is a 30-minute drive from downtown Dallas, so it's no surprise that many residents work in the big city.
When not at the office, they have plenty to do right at home; Allen has a symphony, a ballet, malls, and even its own minor league hockey team.
Parents appreciate the top-rated school system and low crime rate. Their children appreciate MTV-featured "The Edge" -- one of the largest outdoor skate parks in the nation. --J.S.

ongbok: Check out the slide show at the bottom. The stadium has an indoor golf facility and a weight room. I'm surprised they didn't throw an indoor batting cage in also for the baseball team. That's a hell of a stadium. But when they approved this weren't they also planning on using this stadium for concerts and other events that would bring in revenue throughout the year?

Because nothing says "revenue stream" like "2 luxury boxes and tens of thousands of bleacher seats."

The rationalization for pushing a $119 million bond to pay for this $60 million monstrosity, even as that same school district is firing teachers & support staff due to budget shortfalls, is that it could, in theory, possibly generate revenue. The reality is that I highly doubt they would ever get anything like the revenue to justify that thing, unless it's used as a megachurch on Sundays, thus generating a double-whammy of stupidity.

Texas - it's like a whole 'nother country. A third-world country, to be sure, but the slogan's still accurate.

ChrisDe: From the HuffPost article:

Allen Eagle Stadium's construction continued even as Texas lawmakers cut the state's education funding by $4 billion, reducing all school district tax rates by about one-third in 2006. By the 2011-2012 school year, Allen was facing a $4.5 million budget shortfall and was forced to cut 44 teaching positions and 40 support positions through attrition and voluntary buyouts.

Wow. That's obscene.

/do they still get to have a team play there if the state achieves it's patriotic God-given mission to make organized education disappear?

Yet these same people will vote down the next property tax increase to keep the schools going, once again proving that democracy just doesn't work.

Although I recently learned they are finally renovating the high school itself, about 12 years after the multi-million dollar "entertainment center" for the stadium.

downstairs: High School football is big in Texas? Huh. Never knew that.

Its why people in the north will never get how big football is in the south, during the 80s there were more fans at our local high schools football games than the braves and sometimes the falcons.

It helped the braves only had few thousand some nights.

Nadie_AZ: Funny. I am suddenly reminded of when I am reading about the Hohokam indians. There were ball courts in every village, ones that reminded the archeologists of ballcourts in Central Mexico where the Maya had large courts for games. It is thought the ballcourts were used for games and even for commerce.

Is this what we will be remembered for? Our ballcourts?
