Birnone: thomps: WaltzingMathilda: right, but then you have people saying what deadmau5 does is "dubstep" when that's the only term people use on TV

has there been a dubstep-themed CSI show yet? like "the dubstep killer" or something? that's when you know the term has lost all meaning.

There was an episode of Grimm that had a dj character who wore a cat head.

Glad I scanned the rest of the thread before replying.

WaltzingMathilda: DeltaPunch: You'll be missed, whoever-you-are-and-whatever-you-do.

/should've taken a hiatus before jumping on the dubstep wagon
//you had your own little corner in the electro-house genre
///then you became a dubstep nobody

2 questions:

do you really think what he does is characterized as dubstep?

do you really think he is currently a "nobody" in the EDM world?

really? (ok 3 questions)

Catchy tune, especially when played loud on a good system.

God that sucks.

I can enjoy a lot of demonstrably shiatty music because it is just dumb fun. That, that was like getting gammaglobulin shots to the face.

I have zero knowledge of pretty much any dance/electronic genre. What does he do, then? Just curious.

I've had Dubstep explained to me, and couldn't follow said explaination.

i mean he's still an house/electro-house/progressive house artist. he has worked with dub-steppers, but he certainly hasn't released a dubstep album.

which of the following is evidence of a mental disorder:

1. people using rational cognitive skills to categorize and differentiate between different things, or

2. someone thinking people utilizing rational cognitive behavior to categorize and differentiate between different things is a mental disorder

If you couldn't follow, then you must be exceedingly unintelligent...

Dubstep is shortened for "double step" which means it is played as double the tempo. Instead of 4/4 time you play it at 2/2 time.

That's really it. House is played/created at one tempo, dubstep is twice as fast.

Depending on the "mood" and speed of the music, electronic music falls into a number of categories:
Dubstep
House
Techno
Progressive House
Trance
etc.

Deadmau5 is usually called progressive house as far as I know.

Bullseyed: Depending on the "mood" and speed of the music, electronic music falls into a number of categories:

It's not really mood, it's the rhythms.

Sometimes speed comes into play, for example both hardcore and breakcore are typically categorized by extremely fast rhythms. Drum n bass versus breakbeat/nu school breaks as well.

Bullseyed: Deadmau5 is usually called progressive house as far as I know.

He used to be, but is now mainly considered electro house.

FriarReb98: Look, I'm not going to lie to you. I'm sure he's good at what he does. I just really don't get into it whatsoever. I have tried listening to it, and it just doesn't do anything for me. sorry, Deadmau5, but it doesn't. I'm just not into anything in the general genre (won't even pretend to get into the EDM/Techno/Dub argument).

It really isn't about listening to it, that is why you can't understand it. You're probably used to Elvis and that Brittney Spears young lady and the Backstage Boys where you like to sing along.

The primary strength of EDM is that the human body is able to perform tasks better when your subconscious can plug into a beat of some kind. Most people who like EDM listen to EDM as background/white noise while doing something else. I got into it playing online games. It works really well at work where I do data analysis and spreadsheets. It works pretty well for computer programmers too.

nytmare: WaltzingMathilda: do you really think he is currently a "nobody" in the EDM world?

I listen to progressive trance a lot, and have no knowledge of this "deadmau5" guy other than hearing his name a lot recently in the news. There are so many sub-genres of electronic it isn't funny. I don't know which one he's in, probably the techno equivalent of top-40 pop pablum.

He is in progressive house. He went to perform at lollapalooza and there was more demand for him than all the rest of the bands combined so he made his own tour called meowington hax.

The difference between him and other EDM artists is that he can get a bunch of 18-29 year old girls in tank tops to come hang out and nod their head along to his music for 4 hours. Most of the rest of EDM gets hairy, fat computer nerds.

Ha! It's funny because you're saying I don't like the music because I have outdated tastes! It's even funnier because you compared The Beatles, one the the most influential bands of the last century, to Skrillex, whose appeal reminds me of the episode of the Simpsons where Homer becomes an artist!

/In all honesty, if we're going to listen to Electronic music, give me Daft Punk, Benny Benassi, or the Chemical Brothers.

You know that those three artists/groups hang out with Deadmau5, right?
