jst3p: downstairs: WaltzingMathilda: right, but then you have people saying what deadmau5 does is "dubstep" when that's the only term people use on TV

I have zero knowledge of pretty much any dance/electronic genre. What does he do, then? Just curious.

I've had Dubstep explained to me, and couldn't follow said explaination.

Have you heard that one dubstep song that goes:

WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB *kzzt* WUB WUB WUB

oh come on, there's more than one *kzzt*

Ha, I was just coming here to say the same thing. I only recently learned that I was wrong.

Dude, I love the Dead Mau 5. Glad All Over? Because? Bits and Pieces? Catch Us If you Can?

uhh... wow.

my brain can't quite comprehend that. it was the early 2000's, right?

Yep. I made a killing off of selling clothes and music to scores of kids that looked just like that.

thomps: WaltzingMathilda: right, but then you have people saying what deadmau5 does is "dubstep" when that's the only term people use on TV

has there been a dubstep-themed CSI show yet? like "the dubstep killer" or something? that's when you know the term has lost all meaning.

There was an episode of Grimm that had a dj character who wore a cat head.

downstairs: Cool. Next question: what the hell is a skrillex?

People keep trying to explain that one to me, and I still say it sounds like something you'd pick up at the pharmacy to put on a nasty rash.

I was thinking about making fun of him and saying he should take some time off to listen to the Beatles, but then I saw all this stuff about EDM.

This is EDM in it's most glorious form.

It's also available as a portable disintegrator if you break a bolt or tap down a really expensive to replace / repair hole.

The only thing I know about this genre of music is this song by Skrillex.

Link

Catchy tune, especially when played loud on a good system.

EDM....if I hear that one more time I a gonna puke and my head asplode. Today most electronic dance music is shiat made for the masses. It's total crap. Now...from the mid 80s to the early nineties...that's where the good stuff is. It will do you right every time.

Look, I'm not going to lie to you. I'm sure he's good at what he does. I just really don't get into it whatsoever. I have tried listening to it, and it just doesn't do anything for me. sorry, Deadmau5, but it doesn't. I'm just not into anything in the general genre (won't even pretend to get into the EDM/Techno/Dub argument).

this argument is made for every type of music, and this argument is always wrong. it's called getting old. plenty of great EDM out today.

It's simple.

Take any track, slow it down, add bass. Speed it back up and it's drum step.

I listen to progressive trance a lot, and have no knowledge of this "deadmau5" guy other than hearing his name a lot recently in the news. There are so many sub-genres of electronic it isn't funny. I don't know which one he's in, probably the techno equivalent of top-40 pop pablum.

nothing of what you said implies that he's a nobody in the EDM world. all it says is what you know yourself.

are you suggesting your knowledge is a good barometer for the entire industry? because that would be silly, especially because everyone in the EDM world knows who he is, like him or not.

Ha! It's funny because you're saying I don't like the music because I have outdated tastes! It's even funnier because you compared The Beatles, one the the most influential bands of the last century, to Skrillex, whose appeal reminds me of the episode of the Simpsons where Homer becomes an artist!

/In all honesty, if we're going to listen to Electronic music, give me Daft Punk, Benny Benassi, or the Chemical Brothers.

Sure, Klaus Schulze is a good start.

rickythepenguin: WaltzingMathilda: well, techno is considered a genre within EDM. techno is not meant to be a generalized term synonymous with EDM.

i only listen to trance, downtempo, new york trance, west coast house, gabber, old school gabber, dubstep, new school dubstep, west coast ambient, snowcore, east coast snowcore, New Wave, New Romantic, west coast gangsta, Dirty South gangsta, Houston skrew, Miami trance, reggaeton, NWOBHM, Straightedge, Salt Lake City straightedge, Spoken Word, DC Punk, college rock, qawwali (but only old school Nusrat Fatah ali-El Khan, before he sold out to Pearl Jam), slamcore, bluegrass, slamgrass, jam band, No Wave, singer/songwriter, coontcore, Riot Grrl, grunge, sludge rock, prog rock, cock rock, shock jock, jock jams, slow jams, Low Rider Oldies, new school low rider oldies, techno, Acid Jazz, math rock, nerdcore, rockabilly, EDM, blues, Chicago blues, Delta Blues, Merseybeat, death metal, Emo, post-Emo, Screamo, Goth, New SChool Goth but not country.

A band is not a genre.

okay, while you guys are arguing the merits of EDM and Dubstep, ill respond as someone deep in the scene who used to be a Deadmau5 superfan.

im glad he's taking some time off.. his output for the last couple of years has been rather disappointing, and he acts like a jackass almost every time he opens his mouth.

I'd like to enjoy Deadmau5 again, but alas i fear it may be too late.

you think he just hums all that sh*t onto the tracks?

Exactly. He might press play and twiddle knobs, but what comes out when he presses play, he had to compose, and he is a very good composer, at that. When you listen to the best track your fav band ever recorded, you just press play, too. If you listen to Raise Your Weapon, you will hear the music transition at about 3 minutes or so from just "electronic" pop, I guess, into dubstep influenced sound. I dig it.
