If I were a CEO of some huge corporation, I would just keep my mouth shut and donate to groups that would be considered to be neutral (i.e. Civil War historical centers, Computers for Kids in Africa, Gates Foundation, etc). These leaders who take these kinds of stands put their corporations in jeopardy.

Where can I shop and/or eat that will express my general contempt for humanity rather than just one specific segment of it?

So, I went to the Boston Pride Parade a few months ago, and since marriage equality is old hat here, it was actually rather boring. Churches, youth groups, politicians, middles schools etc. A few sparkly drag queens, but not the teeming mass of pulsing young sodomites and glittery naked twinks that I was hoping for.

Anyway, one of the groups was a roofer or general contractor or something, in his work truck, handing out keychains or some such tchotcky. It was a little odd. The parade stops for a minute and the guy yells out? "Why are we in this parade? Because we want your business".

I loled.

I'm not seeing the problem with Target giving 150K to suck up to the potential governor of the state where your company is headquartered (besides the normal pissed I have about companies doing that sort of thing). Supporting the gay community is fine, but a corporation DOES have a duty to maximize profit, and sucking up for political favors is an easy way to cut one's tax liability.

That's a pretty crappy list. Off the top of my head, you should shop at Home Depot over Lowe's if you can due to their support of equality for all. Dominoes and Papa Johns are both questionable in their actions at times.

Strangely, I had the same experience recently.... at the Houston Pride Parade.

Churches, businesses, and politicians. Very family oriented. Most notably, the mayor of Houston is the first openly lesbian mayor of a major American city. She was in the parade with her partner.

Yes, that Houston. The one in Texas.

The New Orleans ones are absolutely what you'd be looking for. Not gay myself... but damn, they know how to throw a party down here. Southern Decadence is a total blast. Absolutely not family friendly though. It *is* hilarious to see the families that came down during that week and had no idea that Southern Decadence was going down.

This is why I do my "boycotting" privately. Hell, I work for a big, evil corporation that does things I don't like.

After a certain size/sphere of influence it's impossible to find one that does everything perfectly according to your own tastes/values/etc. It's even worse when you learn your favorite little company actually rolls up to some gigantic parent entity.

Exercise personal choice when you can. Make your opinions known. But make sure to set your expectations appropriately. True change is hard to come by. No matter how many hot kissing lesbians you throw at the problem.

Southern Decadence isn't a pride parade. Its more of a straight up fark fest.

Its funny that the gay bars at the lavender line (Oz and Bourbon Pub) have to put up signs in the door that warn: "This is a GAY bar. Be nice or leave."

Apparently, every year, a few totally hetero not gay at all very straight tourists manage to obliviously wade their way through all that naked gay manflesh on Bourbon, fight their way into Oz, and suddenly realizing they are in a gay bar, take a swing at the nearest queen to show how totally unaroused and not gay they are.

Huh... really? I can imagine that happening, though I've never seen it. I mean, its painfully obvious to know a bar is a gay bar on Bourbon. In The Marigny, not so much. I tend to stay out of the gay bars on Bourbon lately... they're SO FRIGGIN' LOUD... even at noon on a weekday. Guess I'm getting old.

A good half of my friends are gay, so I end up at Bourbon Pub from time to time. I know my ears don't work as well as they used to... but damn, I can't hold any sort of conversation without asking people to repeat everything they say there.

Tell me about it. My buddy comes down from NYC to visit occasionally. He's a Tulane alum, and both he and a guy he went to school with came out after college (late bloomers). When he comes out they go out one night and gay it up or whatever; I let them go do their own thing because this guy is apparently like Norm from Cheers at the Bourbon Pub. I used to go pretty frequently back in the day, but now.... you know. Middle age. My back hurts from all this standing around, this music is too loud and anyway what's with these damn kids. Etcetera.

Anyway, my friend was here at Jazz Fest and after his routine rendezvous at the BP, he came back biatching about his tinnitus. It more or less ruined the rest of his trip. We still had a good time, but he couldn't get high because that made it worse, and the constant ringing in his ears pretty much ruined any music we would hear.

Long story short: gay or straight, getting old blows.

They farked up their message with that one. I refuse to patron a business until I receive signed and notarized financial disclosure forms from every employee, shareholder, and boss demonstrating that not a single penny has gone to something I may find personally objectionable.

I also require them to show me their supply chains to make sure they aren't purchasing anything from a company that I may find personally objectionable. And I demand financial disclosure forms from those employees and shareholders too.
