That's pretty awesome. Major dad points.

I'd prefer he used free range, all organic vegan friendly PVC, but awesome.

Overindulging dad is overindulging.

Still looks fairly deathtrappy.

2012-08-08 02:14:16 PM
I'm torn. It might not be all that death-trappy, but I do worry about the safety of the thing. Not to mention liability if neighbor kids use it as well.

On the other hand, that thing is PRETTY FARKING AWESOME!!

2012-08-08 02:50:39 PM
Oh it's plenty death trappy alright.

If for some reason you'd just rather watch the youtube minus the mormon ad, the Ford ad, and the spam up and down the side of the Atlanta Journal Constitution (shiat site) page, here it is

Dad builds backyard coaster

Hey Dad, don't listen to some of the jerk-offs that will come into this thread and say this and that about your contraption, give 'em the finger and keep pushing your kid up to the top. Looks like the kid is having a blast.

ROCK ON DAD

It's all fun and games until your 6-year-old suffers a paralyzing neck injury.

2012-08-08 05:03:59 PM
That was awesome.

When we were kids our dad helped us build a half pipe in the neighbors yard out of scrap wood.

Mom took one look at it and said "No farking way, are you crazy"?!

/Mom was a buzzkill.

2012-08-08 05:21:07 PM
Actually, it looks pretty deathtrappy. But cool as hell.

I wonder if he poured concrete for all the wood supports of if this is one rainstorm away from a paralyzing injury.

He might want to read his homeowner insurance policy a bit more thoroughly...

2 days later...kid entirely bored with it.

Dad: "C'mon, son! Let's go outside and ride the coaster!"

Kid: "No! Playin' wid my Tonka trucks."

Dad: "$@*%^%@*^"

I was an ungrateful little sh*t myself when I was young - my Dad built me and my brother an electric car race track that lowered from the ceiling in the den. Played with it a few times, then meh!...

Dad was pissed.

That guy either really loves his kids, or really hates them. That's a clever way to get rid of them.

No diagonal bracing?

File an enhancement request. They'll get around to it on version 3 or 4.

Fish in a Barrel: No diagonal bracing?

This. The only question is which section fails first and which conveniently placed tree the little kid's head smacks into.

Generation_D: Memo to AJC: You suck.

Pretty much this - I'm used to seeing the occasional ad on Youtube vids, but for video with a runtime of less than 2 minutes, it seems ridiculous to have:

- A 30 second, unskippable commercial for Hatfields and McCoys
- A Ford truck ad that takes up half of the viewing area after 10 seconds of video
- The same Ford truck ad fill up the screen again at the 1:00 mark

Detracts from the whole experience. F-. Would not view again.

Fish in a Barrel: No diagonal bracing?

Probably not enough weight being tossed at the structure in that fashion to warrant the diagonal bracing. I am thinking the whole car including the kid would weigh no more than 200 or pounds or so. Would smooth out the first curve and switchback a little. Looked a little hard on the neck.
But that thing will be torn down before long. Doubt dad wants something bad to happen.
Major awesome cool.

Given dad is pushing kid up with minimal effort I am going to go with car plus kid is way less than 100 lbs.
Kid is at most 50 lbs. That car at most is 20 lbs.

But yes construction of that was more than safe for the kid. The kid is strapped in so they are not falling out of the car. There is nothing for the kid to hit their head on and unless the whole thing falls apart the car is not coming off the track).

The kid could barely fit in the car at this point, in a couple months they won't care about the roller coaster anyways, and soon after that they won't fit in the car so it won't matter. The track will either need improvements or it will be taken down. Both are fairly easy to do so that it can hold for 200lbs kid and cart.

For that father I would say go for the improvements as the kid grows older it is something to work on together over time.

It isn't the danger to the kids that gives me nightmares, it is hearing all day and all night, "again. Again. Again. Do it again, Papa. Again. Again. Again. Do it again. . . .'

I didn't know there was such a thing as Youtube in-video ads. Never seen one in all my life. Holy crap, browsing the intertubes with Internet Exploder or some vanilla install of Chrome or Firefox must suck huge donkey dongs. Why do people do that?

old browser/OS builds that don't have ABP versions for them.

ABP is also now allowing "some" ads, so you just don't see their crap, its there.

It felt better to tell the rip off media jerks who took this LA Times original post from a Youtube vid none of them own, and dorked it up 3 times with crap, just exactly what I felt about them. I feel its our civic duty to make sure dying dead-tree media know just how well we all think they're adapting to the new media ways.

Interesting. I recall seeing exactly zero of those things. You seem to be offended by things you could be more easily ignoring.
