farm machine: Ed Grubermann: Why do I think religion is some asinine form of collective insanity? Oh, I don't know...

[thecoloradoobserver.com image 195x300]

Oh yes. Only religion has followers that exhibit collective insanity. You can choose not to follow their beliefs. Just because you do doesn't mean that you should belittle or defame what they believe in. Tolerance is a great thing to have. Try it some time.

Yeah, but cheeseheads aren't running a nuclear-armed nation so far as I know.

Of course, we'll need them when the giant spiders arrive.

Yeah, but I thought you didn't like the Holocaust? And that was kind of a harsh reform, don't you think? I mean, sure, we could have started clean had Hitler been able to finish the job, but I think there's probably a better way to get rid of the influence of the crazy Jews than cook them all.

I reject your initial premise, sir. We're going hard Pakled, and soon will have no time between prayerfests to make civilization "go".

Mein Gott!

In all seriousness though, I don't make a habit out of respecting books. If anything I respect the people who write them- assuming they convey ideas that are worthy of respect. The matter of whether God himself wrote it, or a committee of guys who just enjoy jerking you around did is really a minor detail here.

Both are quite dead these days.

So... looking at women is bad, but being a fundamentalist xenophobic bigot is good?

hmmm... does not compute.

The problem of sin goes away when you stop believing in fairy tales.

I can see why. I looked at Natalie Portman then committed a sin. Now I have to clean it up.

It's cute that you want to respond to everything I type, even in non-Texas threads, but perhaps you should read a little closer. I wasn't talking about the author of the Bible.

Tatsuma: The One True TheDavid:

Given that Islam is a spin-off from Judaism they probably got that from them too.

Except we don't do that.

As I said, most of you don't NOW: I doubt wanting to be seen as "civilized White people" mattered very much eastern Poland in 5272, or for that matter in Hebron in 3772.

Have some historical perspective, man. The whole point of the Haskalah and "Reform" was to prove y'all are Just Folks just like us goyim, that you're White people of the Mosaic faith and/or Hebrew lineage. Why else would the offspring of Ashkenaz have to try so hard to push back the paradigm pendulum? You and I both know that, notwithstanding my quip concerning Comrade Djugashvili, the haredim of today's Brooklyn are more Orthodox than their grandparents -- and that their grandparents were ordinary immigrant slumdwellers like the (Catholic) Irish, "Negroes" and Sicilians.

What a pity that overcoming the evil of assimilation has to be more extreme in those shtetls they've constructed on stolen Arab land than they do in their self-chosen ghettos in New York City. It's no doubt due to Mass Society of any given subtype: I myself still have to take pains to differentiate my articulation of communism from that of the Leninists, but then the social milieux around me care less about that than any given Jew would about the difference between NK and the Bobovers. (What gets me is the masses' assumption that not watching TV or even owning one means there's something very wrong with me: you'd think I'd said Romney is a Farrakhanist or something.) In Brooklyn it's enough to flaunt payot and tzitzit; in Mea Shearim they've got to try harder to show everybody they're "real Jews."

By the way, why don't you just go ahead and Ignore me? I like to read your stuff whether I agree with it or not, but then I'm not nearly as sensitive as you are and balance off the occasional faux pas with the genuine relief of knowing I'm not the only intelligentsius around here. Which is good for me because there're so many "uncoventional" things about me that it wouldn't be hard to feel all insulted 4/5 of the time, either online or off: you get the benefit of living in a neighborhood where lots of people share your basic assumptions, while I have to live in a poor neighborhood in Lexington, KY. (E.g., people around here don't seem to realize that the University of Kentucky is a governmental, taxpayer-funded institution so its Wildcats men's basketball team is an example of "socialism.") So you have less to lose by Ignoring me than vice versa, lucky you.

We're in a non-Texas thread? I'd heard everything was bigger in Texas. I feel lied to.

And I can't read a little closer, doctor says it's bad for my eyes. Possibly my hips.

But yeah, I wasn't talking about the author(s) of the bible either- more the content within, and most importantly respect for that content. My advice? Don't, generally speaking.

Which isn't saying by the way that there's not some bits worth respecting. Read it, see for yourself. That is, after all what a book is for. Living a book.... not so much good for understanding it. I'd avoid digesting a TV as well, no matter what the magazines say about it.

If you're looking for a thesis structure of some sort in the bible, you're probably going about it in the wrong way.

Kinda like looking for sanity in a Kronenburg flick.

Or a concerted effort in Congress.

Tatsuma:

When reform sprung up in Germany, it was about a rejection of the core beliefs, not that they had opinions that were acceptable within the system.

Funny, I thought Reform still meant believing in the Tetragrammaton from Mt. Sinai, that the Hebrew of the Bible was the Holy Tongue, etc. Even back in the dark ages of 19th-century Germany. I had no idea the Reform movement always was all about becoming commie atheist hippie homos. (That's for Quakers these days.)

I am serious. There is only one TheDavidTM, really; nobody else speaks for me (why I don't vote). My society decided by 1972 when I was 9 that I was unfit to be part of it. And I've been on meds several times, pretty much continuously since March 1992. "So thanks for the bigotry," to quote you.

Not at all. But it is historically and culturally significant. Explaining some of the real-life implications of the Bible's commandments (there are way more than ten) is interesting, to me at least, even if only anecdotally.

"The guy" is not God (or the jackwagons that wrote the Bible), it's the guy who wrote the other book. I can see his point. Not the point or structure in the Bible.

=============

All religious fanatics are pretty messed up. If I had my way, all the fundamentalist Jews, Muslims, Christians would get dumped into some desert waste and provided with plenty of guns and ammo and allowed to fight it out to the death. Any survivors would be rewarded with a nice neutron bomb prize. Maybe then the rest of us could get some peace and quiet.

Care to elaborate on how that is relevant?

Some Jewish fundamentalists decide instead of trying to enforce their BS standards they are going to take the burden of their faith on themselves, and you think showing jewish extremists harassing arabs fits?
