Yet again, three guys do something in Meah Shearim, and it creates an article worldwide that pans all Orthodox Jews.

The people who do this (the self-appointed modesty squad) are merely a bunch of thugs, without any supervision whatsoever, who terrorize their own population in Chareidi neighborhoods.

These are the people who also go to Iran to kiss Ahmadinejad, or support Hamas and Fatah, or spit at a little girl, or burn down stores.

They are barely in the low hundreds if you include both the members, supporters and their own families. This is how small they are. They are the Westboro Church of Judaism and do not in any way whatsoever represent the lifestyle of Chareidi Jews, we are all annoyed by that but guess what, no central authority, and these people don't even listen to their own Rabbis in the first place.

These people are Neturei Karta, or as they now like to be known, Sikrikim (the zealots).

I had to learn about these glasses on the internet, and I live in that friggin neighborhood.

Well yes and now, what is called 'Orthodoxy', from the Ultra-Orthodox to the modern Orthodox liberal, has pretty much always existed in the Jewish people in one form or another. It was merely what a Jew did. Only when Reform came to the scene in Germany in the mid 1850s that the name 'Orthodoxy' developed, not on our own but applied to us by Jews who rejected to follow Torah has it had always been followed.

Ultra-Orthodox Jews are just those Jews who do the extra mile, and sadly within that minority there is a stupid minority, as there are in everything.

At least the worst they do is scream at people, spit and yell. They don't actually kill or attack people (save the VERY few incidents) and when that happens, it is usually other Orthodox Jews that are attacked, not the non-religious.

More Wahhabis, more ultra-Orthodox and more Xtian fundies affects me quite a bit, because these retards breed like there's no tomorrow, because for them, there isn't, and Angry Sky Dad will fix it in the afterlife.

So I have an interest in seeing their breeding of each other and their pinheaded belief systems restricted as much as possible. The irony of human civilization is that "stopping at one or two" only occurs to people bright enough, in general, not to be chained to antique magic systems, and who can count past potato.

From my point of view, it's like giving the runts free run of the grain silo.

I offer this in the most earnest and non-accusatory sense possible. Within the haredi community, many if not most seem to pursue a life apart from the secular community and the world at large. When they keep to themselves, though, it allows the lunatic fringe to set their image for them. I mean, there's you coming on here to explain that this is not a widespread thing among the population of Mea Shearim or Crown Heights or Kiryas Joel, but most people don't hear it. The ultra-Orthodox community seems to invite wild speculation about these things because they are generally insular by choice. Wouldn't it behoove the communities to at least have some public information office to handle public relations and perception among the general population, if indeed you guys do care at all what the broader public thinks about you and dispelling perceptions based on the actions of Neturei Karta fanatics?

What about the word "god"? If you read "god" in a book, would the glasses remove the "o" and replace it with a "-" so you wouldn't get dragged off to hell or whatever the fark is supposed to happen that makes twerpy people write "g-d" all the time?

I had to learn about these glasses on the internet, and I live in that friggin neighborhood.

master_dman:

In Islam, they rape, THEN stone them to death as harlots.

Given that Islam is a spin-off from Judaism they probably got that from them too. Jews in Arab/Muslim countries used to be much more like the majority populations: it was Jews in Christian Europe who decided they wanted to be White and assimilated accordingly. I'll bet "harlots" were commonly stoned and perhaps raped in Russian shtletls right up till the 20th century; note that a lot of these "ultra-Orthodox" Israelis come from the Tsarist domains by way of New York and New Jersey, where they were not exposed to the civilizing effects of Stalinism. ("In Soviet Union we put them in gulag, then rape and stone them.")

Perhaps the next Ellis Island Experience should weed out people who believe in anything "supernatural." (Astrology is as "scientific" as Creationism, dammit.)

Anyway, regarding the body and its presentation, for a culture to be considered civilized attractive post-pubescents of both sexes should be persuaded to go around nude or nearly so, while everybody else (such as ugly fat old guys like me) should be made to wear burkas. It should probably be permissible for lovelies to choose covering, but us uglies who dress revealingly ought to be stoned; and rape or unsolicited groping should be severely punished, but there ought to be street-side Wank Shelters where people can go to look out without being seen (like a public peep show).

Tatsuma: We do care, but we are a very very decentralized religion. We don't have a Sanhedrin. We don't have a King. Heck, we don't even have a spokesman we could all agree on. We are an incredibly splintered community, how could we ever put out our message our, when we can't even agree on what the details are?

You heard of two jews, three opinions, right? It makes this mess look good.

How do you reconcile that statement with this one:
"Only when Reform came to the scene in Germany in the mid 1850s that the name 'Orthodoxy' developed, not on our own but applied to us by Jews who rejected to follow Torah as it had always been followed."

It seems that Judaism rarely has sufficient internal agreement for there to be an "as it had always been followed."

God is way ahead of you, Bubula.

Why do you think that the People of the Book are so myopic? God knows that they should be reading the Torah instead of oggling the shiksas, so he makes them near-sighted, pawky, awkward, and ugly.

This is God's way of saying, cobbler, stick to thy last, to the intelligent, the cunning, and the bookish. God gives jocks perfect eyesight so they can run fast without tripping over nerds. The blond hair is just a warning sign. It says "WARNING! Ass in gear, brain in park."

Mr. Magoo is a perfect gentleman. He's so gallant that he has plenty of good manners and consideration left over for bears, lions, mailboxes, lamp posts, tree stumps, etc., all things that he frequently mistakes for The Ladies, Bless 'Em! He is the perfect illustration of Divine Providence in action. He is blind and therefore fearless and indestructible.

God knows that his Chosen People (and his Frozen People, and all good religious people, in fact) can not keep it in their pants without his assistance. Blindness is his way of saying, mind your business!

The devout should stay in Church (or Synagogue, or Mosque, or Temple) and leave the gaudy showiness of Nature to us heathens and atheists and people of science who have some business rooting around in the foundations of reality.

Nonetheless, being a book worm, I am extremely myopic, but I don't need to frost my glasses to keep me from looking. I have dandruff and fingerprints for that. And you can trust me not to go awooga! and steam from the ears just because a naked cyclist rolls by. I have learned not to walk into lamp posts by reading while walking. I am trained to avoid trouble almost as well as Mr. Magoo is designed to create it without noticing the chaos that follows him everywhere.

These glasses are likely to force them to need real glasses... so if they want blurry vision, they just take off their glasses.

I've got to find the study that found that the eyeball grows longer when it sees an out-of-focus image.

What probably happens is that babies are born with eyeballs which are too small. As the look at the blurry world, their eyeballs grow longer until everything is in focus. That's fine... until something goes wrong with an eye and things are out of focus.. the eyeball continues growing, making the problem worse. So once you need glasses, you indeed will probably always need glasses.

These out-of-focus glasses will probably give them permanently bad vision. Mission accomplished.

Written by an agnostic who was raised Jewish and spends a year trying to live the Bible as literally as possible (he doesn't stone any gays or adulterers or pluck his eye out), it actually gives you some respect for the Bible and will change the way you look at things. As I said, most of you don't NOW: I doubt wanting to be seen as "civilized White people" mattered very much eastern Poland in 5272, or for that matter in Hebron in 3772.

Have some historical perspective, man. The whole point of the Haskalah and "Reform" was to prove y'all are Just Folks just like us goyim, that you're White people of the Mosaic faith and/or Hebrew lineage. Why else would the offspring of Ashkenaz have to try so hard to push back the paradigm pendulum? You and I both know that, notwithstanding my quip concerning Comrade Djugashvili, the haredim of today's Brooklyn are more Orthodox than their grandparents -- and that their grandparents were ordinary immigrant slumdwellers like the (Catholic) Irish, "Negroes" and Sicilians.

What a pity that overcoming the evil of assimilation has to be more extreme in those shtetls they've constructed on stolen Arab land than they do in their self-chosen ghettos in New York City. It's no doubt due to Mass Society of any given subtype: I myself still have to take pains to differentiate my articulation of communism from that of the Leninists, but then the social milieux around me care less about that than any given Jew would about the difference between NK and the Bobovers. (What gets me is the masses' assumption that not watching TV or even owning one means there's something very wrong with me: you'd think I'd said Romney is a Farrakhanist or something.) In Brooklyn it's enough to flaunt payot and tzitzit; in Mea Shearim they've got to try harder to show everybody they're "real Jews."

By the way, why don't you just go ahead and Ignore me? I like to read your stuff whether I agree with it or not, but then I'm not nearly as sensitive as you are and balance off the occasional faux pas with the genuine relief of knowing I'm not the only intelligentsius around here. Which is good for me because there're so many "uncoventional" things about me that it wouldn't be hard to feel all insulted 4/5 of the time, either online or off: you get the benefit of living in a neighborhood where lots of people share your basic assumptions, while I have to live in a poor neighborhood in Lexington, KY. (E.g., people around here don't seem to realize that the University of Kentucky is a governmental, taxpayer-funded institution so its Wildcats men's basketball team is an example of "socialism.") So you have less to lose by Ignoring me than vice versa, lucky you.

And I can't read a little closer, doctor says it's bad for my eyes. Possibly my hips.

But yeah, I wasn't talking about the author(s) of the bible either- more the content within, and most importantly respect for that content. My advice? Don't, generally speaking.

Which isn't saying by the way that there's not some bits worth respecting. Read it, see for yourself. That is, after all what a book is for. Living a book.... not so much good for understanding it. I'd avoid digesting a TV as well, no matter what the magazines say about it.

=============

All religious fanatics are pretty messed up. If I had my way, all the fundamentalist Jews, Muslims, Christians would get dumped into some desert waste and provided with plenty of guns and ammo and allowed to fight it out to the death. Any survivors would be rewarded with a nice neutron bomb prize. Maybe then the rest of us could get some peace and quiet.

I would say when they start targeting and killing civilians as a matter of policy (unless you want to argue that the US govt practiced state-sponsored terrorism against african americans).

Or is that designation for Muslims only?

Muslims are the only ones in the area I see doing that as a matter of policy. Israel has killed civilians but they never targeted them as a matter of policy, and I have never seen them celebrate guys who murder kids unlike the people they are fighting.

Yes to both. It's obvious from reading history from as recent as 1970.

Farther back, state-sponsored terrorism is documented in Ireland from the reign of Henry VIII, and "winning the west" was state-sponsored terrorism against Native Americans and Hispanics. Or maybe it's cute when "our" side does it?

As to "targeting civilians," what do you call it when NATO bombers take out water and sewage treatment facilities? Did only Saddam's Republican Guard drink water or poop? Bomb one hospital and a few hundred might die, but leaving a whole city to literally drink sewage is far worse. What do you boil water with when NATO is pissed off at you?

With all due respect, you sound naive and deficient in critical thinking skills. Are you a Republican Christian from Texas?

All the petty terrorism by Palestinians put together does not equal the amount of misery inflicted upon them in one single farking day. It's like calling a rape victim 'violent' because she tried to bite her attacker. Cue "Oh how dare you minimize the suffering and fear inflicted by the rockets, why sometimes they have to find a bomb shelter for several minutes and people miss part of the show they were watching blah blah blah"
