From the CNN video: She had her own insurance, (even 2 years after her husband lost his job when Bain closed the plant, 2 years after Romney left the company)... then lost her insurance when she lost her jorb. Curious... how's that Romney's fault that she died?

Politico's Alex Burns reported that the Soptic's wife died in 2006, four years after the plant was closed. "Soptic went to the hospital for pneumonia, but doctors found signs of very advanced cancer, and she died two weeks later on June 22."

So what you're saying is, had this woman gone to her doctor in the four years following her husband's lay off, she might still be alive?

Excellent. Thanks for confirming what we already knew.

Perhaps if they had moved to Massachusetts, where everyone has health care, Mitt could have saved her.

I think the idea is that policies that Romney supports (at the moment) killed her. If we had universal health-care she could have gotten checkups.

This story could be bullshiat or not but I have never seen it debunked anywhere.

The article "debunks" it by saying she died of Stage 4 cancer four years after being laid off. Not having health care insurance and therefore not seeing a doctor for four years is completely consistent with the ad's claim. If she would have died of Stage 4 cancer 6 months after being employed she would have had no excuse preventing early detection treatment.

My brother had obvious signs of cancer two years before he died of Stage 4 cancer. He didn't have it checked because of laziness but seeing a doctor would have saved his life.

In any case, I think it is lame to directly blame Romney but certainly should convince people not to vote for him because he wants to repeal Obamacare which is the only thing protecting some people from dying this way.

As long as that bolded part gets through and is reinforced by Romney and his surrogates it's still a win for Obama.

And Romney claiming "But all the bad stuff happened after I left!" just sounds whiny and disingenuous.

So Republicans spin Obama's ad as "Obama says Romney killed a woman" and then counter that spin by pointing out that Romney did not directly kill that woman.

Yes, but had she gone on the well woman checkups that the ACA just made free to all women, she might have caught the cancer before it was stage 4.

Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul brought up the law in response to a Priorities USA ad in which a steelworker, who lost his job after Bain Capital closed the GST Steel mill where he worked, connects his unemployment - and resulting lack of health insurance - to the death of his wife.

Team Romney's response: He should have lived in Massachusetts.

On two Fox News appearances Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, Saul countered that if the steelworker, Joe Soptic, and his wife had lived in Massachusetts, they would have kept their insurance under Romney's health care reform law.

"To that point, if people had been in Massachusetts, under Gov. Romney's health care plan, they would have had health care," Saul said Tuesday.

Pretty much all you need to know about this candidate. Look, sh*t happens. That's why we have insurance, we have savings accounts, we have sick days, we have Emergency Rooms, we have food banks, and so on and so on. What kind of heartless person simply says 'oh well, shoulda coulda woulda!'

Bain didn't close the plant because they're meanies, the plant failed. In capitalism, you have to let the failures fail. Maybe if Joe Soptic was a better worker, he would still have the job. In any case, nobody owes him anything; it was a business, not a welfare program for his wife.

Soptic's wife had health insurance at the time that Soptic was laid off. But her insurance was through Savers Thrift Store (which likely had shiatty plans compared to a solid blue collar job, and was their backup plan anyway so likely didn't cover major medical), and she was in turn laid off in late '02 or early '03. Joe himself was laid off in '02. It was four years later that the cancer (lung cancer) was discovered, when she went to the doctor's office because of pneumonia.

Regular checkups in those four years may have caught it, especially considering that she was losing weight for a while. She refused to go to the doctor because of the costs to the family and lack of insurance coverage. At the time the husband was employed as a janitor, so going broke was a very real concern. When she finally went in, it was far too late.

Il Douchey: Bain didn't close the plant because they're meanies, the plant failed.

The plant failed because Bain did the following:

1) Take over GST Steel
2) Charge GST Steel hundreds of million dollars in "management fees."
3) Take out massive loans in GST Steel's name, use the loans and the money that should've been paid to the pension system at GST Steel (GST Steel under Bain underfunded the pension system by about 44 million dollars) to pay Bain Capital hundreds of million dollars in fees.
4) Once GST Steel's debt load is so large, close the plant, liquidate the assets and declare bankruptcy in GST Steel, leaving creditors with hundreds of million dollars of debt which will never be paid back.

Tada.

Dan McLaughlin also of RedState tweeted: "What conservatives are doing re Andrea Saul's comment is the same as how you housebreak your dog. Romney needs to know not to go there."

Phil Klein tweeted: "Not sure if the Romney camp realizes what a huge opening they've just created for Ds on Obamacare"

Seriously, Mitt Romney could be a reasonable candidate if he would embrace what he did in Massachusetts and make himself the poster child for why we need to simplify taxes and make sure poor people and rich people play on the same field. Instead, he has to do back himself into a corner to please the Teatards, and then he shoots himself in the foot with them by admitting that Obamacare isn't nearly as evil as people have made it out to be.
