I actually agree with the author; those particular "sports" that are judged arbitrarily have no place in the Olympics. THe process has been corrupt for years anyway.

Fine. Next time add the Butthurt Medley to the mix and we'll be on top again.

"Butthurt" or not... With track and field getting into the action, and team sports (esp. volleyball and basketball) championships coming up, we (The U.S.) have a good chance to top the medal count, anyway.

But "trampoline" as a sport?!?!?! That one really needs to be thrown out.

Oh No, Based on this article I'd Say Canada has a good chance of getting that score overturned and coming away with the top spot in the Butthurt and Individual Whining events

Wow, way to take a stand on something that matters a whole, whole bunch. Seriously, can we just give out the Pulitzer now?

I watched it. That event is a battle of attrition. Everything you know about trampolines resulting in neck-snapping tragedy? Take that, get a really big trampoline, so big you need rules regarding minimum ceiling height, and put an Olympic gold medal on offer. Now see what happens.

I hated the Canadian team that game. They came out playing so chippy, even dirty. The ref should have been throwing yellow cards out way earlier in the match. I thought Canada should have been down a person before halftime. I don't watch much soccer, but I've never seen a failed tackle that came from directly behind not be a red card.

No surprise here. Americans win the butthurt event by a landslide at every international competition.
Even in the events the deservedly win it gets soiled by poor sportsmanship and ego.

Naw, this is just the media running WAY too far with a few emotional comments made by non-professional athletes who just lost a huge game and then had microphones shoved in their faces. They showed up, they played hard, they were thirty seconds away from taking the best team in the world to penalties, good game girls, we're proud of you, sucks how it ended but as your own coach said "that's football". If they had been hockey players instead of footballers they'd have told a more direct truth: The refs don't score goals, and after giving up three leads and putting yourselves in a position where those failures can cost you a game, you can't blame anyone for tipping the scales on you.

Our boxer won the fight but lost on the split, his corner protested, we lost, everyone involved is over it and the press either cries or lauds his "spirit and sportsmanship", as though he should have sat there crying and waited for security to drag him away.

If your sport's winning condition cannot be objectively counted or measured your participation constitutes an acceptance of the risk that the result may not meet your definition of fairness. That goes for any sport with judges, from boxing to diving to gymnastics (which actually has a pretty easy to understand scoring method that an untrained novice could use to figure out the score of this or that routine) to goddamned ice dancing. Anything left to the absolute discretion of an individual can be taken away from you like that with no recourse fark you go to jail do not pass go batteries not included. Don't like it? Take up javelin or rowing or something.

Also Chris Chase is an idiot.

While I completely agree with your statement, and it sickens me to write this, he is correct. With video analysis, however, subjective judging can be removed. Just have a rubric point values for each "move" and a list of deductions that can be calculated in real time by a computer. Have a person or group of people review the replay in slow motion to corroborate the deductions given by the computer, and the subjectivity is gone. Within seconds, an accurate, indisputable result is generated that has valid, transparent reasoning as to why a particular score was given. A gymnast should hit the floor after a vault and know within a few hundredths of a point what their score will be.

//Would work in baseball too, but having a completely subjective strike zone is better for the game somehow.

And for all you womens soccer fans out there...the ref from the Can-USA game will NOT be doing any more games even though she is apparently the most experienced.
Team Canada will NOT be penalized for pointing out the ineptitude of said ref.

this. competitions decided solely by judges are not sports. they are competitions, some of which require elite athleticism, and that is all. we could have olympic beauty pageants and dog shows too...

Er, *one* very bad call. No way the defenders were actively trying to block the ball from going into the net with their arms, but with the unnatural position the ref had no choice but to call that one.

Anyway that game's over now. Bring on France!

I don't normally read comments on Yahoo articles, but when I do, I make sure they are Chris Chase articles...

I was going to make a comment about how idiotic this article was and that the writer must be a journalism school drop-out. Then I saw it was Chris Chase.... 'Nuf said.

Oh for God's sake, are you serious? Are you going for the world record of bad articles?

responses:
- He obtained that record a long time ago. I think he's just trying to pad that record and make it unattainable for generations to come.
- he's got the gold for that already... no one bothered to tell him there is no platinum for worst blogger ever.

Writing may be subjective (like gymnastics), but there is no disputing that Chris Chases articles always come in last place...

Whenever I'm feeling bad about my son being in prison for Arson, Burglary, Various forms of fraud, Kidnapping and Grand larceny I'll read a Chris Chase blog and say to myself "well at least he isn't Chris Chase"

2012-08-08 02:42:49 PM
I read about four sentences, tried to skim the next paragraph, and then gave up. That guy should go back to valet parking or whatever it is he does for money because writing isn't going to work out.

I thought FARK had some understanding that no Chris Chase articles would ever get greenlit - and I felt good about that.

I died a little today.

Meh...what's done is done, I agree. But I still say 2 bad calls. Ref has to be positioned better if that's the excuse. If there is any question whatsoever when you consider the play was a result of the 1st bad call one would think the benefit of doubt should go that team's way.

We'll say bad call 1 and 1a.

Yes, anyone who has glanced at the Canadian media online today is WELL aware that the evil ref is not doing the Gold Medal game.

Even though refs rarely do a semi-final and a final in these sorts of tournaments.

They give out 100 swimming medals and the US still cannot compete in the medal count. Next they'll be demanding 36 different kinds of basketball.

2012-08-08 03:03:59 PM
The reason China has as many medals as we do is because no self-respecting American athlete is going to try to be an Olympian in table tennis or badminton or speedwalking. We won't win those medals because we don't have any dogs in those fights. If China wants to pad their stats with badminton golds and speedwalking golds and then claim they are the better athletes, they can try.

But for the real sports, the Americans win. And everyone knows that. That's why we still won golds in judged sports like gymnastics.

2012-08-08 03:04:31 PM
That is a piece of shiat article. Using the real medal count, half of the US medals came from one event (swimming).

Is she better quality than the woman who *is* doing the US/Japan match?

"Bibiana Steinhaus, is the same official who handled the 2011 Women's World Cup Final, also coincidentally contested by USA and Japan."

Seems to me doing a World Cup final makes you pretty qualified. Looking at both of their wikipedia sights seems to confirm it. The German is more experienced.

Hey now...that gold came in the age-old world renowned sport of trambopoline!

Also...the U.S. population is about 10 times that of Canada. Statistically speaking, the U.S. should have 140 medals right now. Slackers! We need more swimming events...STAT!!!

We've got 1/3 of the population of China and we don't have a mandatory state-run Agoge system that snatches these kids from thier parents at age five or six and forces them to train for years. We're still only 3 medals behind, a deficit that will be more than made up for by the end of track and field

Canada OTOH, is currently 29th in the medal standings

Canada's larger in landmass area than the US but only has 1/10th its population. Hmm is that from lack of will and desire, or just technical knowledge on how to procreate?

Let's say you are an American athlete. Let's say you are an elite athlete, in the top 0.0001%. You could make $25M a year, become famous, earn tons of endorsements, date supermodels and become a national hero if you play baseball or win a gold medal once every four years in complete obscurity playing table tennis. What are you going to do?
