FTFA: Homeland Security Chief Janet Napolitano said it herself back in 2009, U.S. veterans pose the biggest threat for homegrown terrorism. "Returning veterans are targets of right-wing extremist groups that are trying to recruit those to commit violent acts within the country," she said. "Some of them indeed want to do what happened in Oklahoma City."

Wasn't she forced to retract that because butthurt Teahadists?

If every person gets on a watchlist, doesn't that make the watchlist useless?

Kind of like if a guy gets on a sexual predator list for peeing in public, doesn't that make the list useless?

Put them on the list because they have credible reasons to put them on, not because of a particular affiliation that happens to be against yours.

Sometimes people go nuts, and just shoot things up. No list in the world is going to prevent that.

FTA:
The recent Colorado shooting, that guy was a graduate student, who could've predicted that?"

I'm thinking his psychiatrist could have if she actually followed up on the case. While there are obviously issues separating the signal from the noise and providing funds to look into possible problem cases, none of these shootings really came completely out of the blue without months if not years worth of warning signs. Suggesting that nobody could have predicted this stuff is just a cop out.

While things like this are predictable, we don't have a Future Crimes division of law enforcement. There's nothing that could have been done without violating his civil rights.

Neo- Naziism is, like Islam, a doctrine which preaches the supremacy of one group over another, and which endorses violent means to put that supremacy into practice. There are, however, many more Muslims than neo- Nazis in the world and even in the US itself, so we should not allow ourselves to be fooled by the notion that both groups are somehow equal in influence -- or more absurdly yet, that Islam poses no threat at all to the lives and liberties of others, but has been unfairly vilified by the same "white people" who are supposedly to blame for the rest of the world's problems.

That being said, I realize that the same ones among you who believe that monitoring Muslim groups for potential extremist activity is wrong, mmmkay will enthusiastically embrace any plan to closely scrutinize anyone expressing dissent from your left- liberal consensus, and to stigmatize and persecute those dissenters as extremists wherever possible. Such hypocrisy is in your nature.

And she's still wrong for saying it. You can't put all veterans into some sort of "dangerous" category because one or two guys go off every few years. I daresay the percentages probably are lower for veterans than civilians in that regard.

Also, to the guy in the article who said the Colorado shooter was a graduate student and "who could have predicted" that he'd shoot people, the school psychiatrist did predict he'd be violent. The school just didn't bother to do anything about it because he decided to quit going there.

"There's really in my view no way that many people are out to do harm to us, or that many of our own citizens are out to do harm to us," says Tritico. "I think it's a list that has grown out of fear that is now so unmanageable it's probably not worth while."

Truer words were never spoken.

The "watch list" was originally created to help the FBI and Secret Service evaluate and assess threats to the President and other government dignitaries from direct threat of assassination. It was NOT meant to become a list to try to prevent terrorism and keep hundreds of thousands of people under some kind of long-distance surveillance. And it most certainly was never meant to be some kind of exhaustive and predictive list of anyone who might someday, under unknown circumstances, somehow threaten people in the US.

Are there groups inside and outside the US that need watching? Sure. Are there half a million people worldwide that the FBI must keep tabs on "just in case"? Absolutely not. The signal-to-noise ratio is so high now that for every person who needs scrutiny, there are probably 50 who are just wasting agents' time and energy. More could be done by focusing not on "John Smith, the white supremacist who has ties to the militias and who wrote a rambling screed on his Facebook page denouncing the Evil Empire," and more on the leaders of those militias who are preaching hate. A watch list can never stop random acts of violence, but it can keep track of those encouraging such acts.

Riiiiiiiight. 'Cuz doctors who perform abortions have been murdered by atheists and heathens, not fundamentalist Christians. 'Cuz Tim McVeigh wasn't a pro-militia-movement US veteran. 'Cuz the Montana Freemen weren't a conservative Christian para-military organization.

Terrorism is terrorism, regardless of skin color, religion, culture or nationality.
