Ignoring the bargain basement joke, I've never understood why teams cared so much about "traditional image" that names were such a big intrusion on an already-identifiable athlete.

It's not about the image. It's done for the same reason they shave your head at boot camp. When you are a football player, you are not an individual, you are not special. Or something like that.

It helps the argument that jersey sales are just people buying team jerseys, not player jerseys.

"No, people are not buying #8 because that is the star player, it is just the team name they want. Really, we are not making money off this kid."

/surprised PSU did not lose more players, though I guess they can still lose them next year.

Jersey sales are the primary reason for putting the players' names on them. I'm guessing the ADs have wanted named jerseys for years, but Paterno nixed the idea.

I can't believe those 3 trustees put in that appeal and vow a lawsuit followed by the player's appeal. I mean, it is like they want the NCAA to reconsider and give the 4-year death penalty by showing the culture won't change with these current things. What do they think will happen? The NCAA will go sure, let's wait....okay your former administrators were just found guilty and sentenced to jail so I guess we'll lower the penalty by 2 years and give JoePa all his wins back?

Seriously, what do they hope to gain by prolonging this other than potentially making a lot of trouble. The NCAA probably doesn't want all of the bad things out there which is why they struck the lighter deal, now you ask them to bring more at you?

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I agree with Michael Wilbon: anything short of the death penalty, PSU just needs to man up and accept the punishment. Since they were spared the death penalty, these trustees and former players just need to STFU and move forward. I don't know what they hope to accomplish by keeping this scandal in the headlines besides providing further evidence that the culture of the football program hasn't changed one bit.

SO MUCH THAT. They just need to get over it. It's done, it's over with, and all of this whining is not helping their cause. I don't agree with the NCAA's actions on this mess, but take the medicine and move on. Fighting is only going to make it hurt more.

/That last sentence sounds like something Jerry may have told those kids

The NCAA and the PSU president wanted it over with asap. That's why they did the deal they did without following standard procedure. These idiot trustees wanting the NCAA to come in and do a FULL investigation is just stupid.
Do they really think PSU is so squeaky clean that a pissed off NCAA won't find hundreds of minor infractions, maybe some major ones, along with more info on the coverup?
They need to get over themselves and just take the punishment.

THIS. I suspect the NCAA investigators will be shocked by the violations JeoPa oversaw during his tenure. Anybody willing to overlook (and even abet) child rape would think nothing of committing major violations, as long as they could get away with it.

We already have heard from several people that JoePa demanded, and got, special treatment for Football Players who ran afoul of the law or had academic issues, which are, in themselves, major violations. If more evidence turns up to corroborate the allegations already made, PSU's football program is toast.

Yup, one of the Deans in charge of punishing students quit due to the fact she fought with Paterno all the time. PSU did not want the NCAA showing up with a shovel and combing through all their files.

Now now, they had the option to take their scholarships to schools with less-molesty programs. If they choose not to, then so be it. They want to lie in that bed, let them.

That. I had family that worked for Big 12 school and personally overheard conversations where said family (who practiced law) were actively calling in favors to judges, law enforcement, etc. to have players in criminal/legal trouble removed from their unfortunate situation.

The whole dang system is crooked, everywhere. I'm sure that not every one is hiding kiddie rape, but every one of these big football schools has nasty skeletons in their closet.

Even if it is really true, this doesn't change anything, only that drawing attention to yourself is a BAD IDEA. Worse, when your lord coach god, JoePa was lauded for decades for the "clean program" he ran.

Reality is that it's not "common practice" - there are probably a handful of programs that had the systematic corruption that Penn State seems to have had, along with isolated incidents at many larger schools (as meatschool's anecdote shows). Most do actually follow the rules, as best as they can.

Of course, people who defend corrupt programs often resort to using the logical fallacy of the "everybody does it" smear. In general, if this is your argument, you've already failed.

Which is why anyone encouraging the NCAA to investigate their school, as these trustees are by demanding "due process," is too dumb to live. I just pray they get their wish.

2012-08-08 01:04:44 PM
sure, "everybody is doing it". JoePaedo was all about "doing things tree right way", though. Penn State was supposedly better than everybody else because of Joe and his morality.

you can complain about that old goat at Florida state, but did he enable child rape?

Okay, let's say it is common practice. I believe that it is, as well.

So Penn State gets their wish for "due process" and a "full investigation" and every under the sun is able to be subpoenaed. Do you not think the administrators will be asked about these incidents? How cover-ups and hiding criminal activity were prevalent and persistent in the Penn State Athletic Department? We've already seen the documents from other Penn State administrators about how the football team was held to a different standard regarding punishment. What if they're now exposed, along with all of the Sandusky nonsense?

Do you want sanctions against those actions added on as well?

I hope one of these appeals that the Ped State douchebags are filing is accepted, the NCAA says "Sure, we'll take back the punishment we handed out" and then BOOM 10 year death penalty, monstrous fines, and anything else under the sun they can think of. Maybe that would finally shut people up.

So if the NCAA is taken to court and forced tp appeal these samctions can they also increase the penalties if they allowed or requested to do so by whomever their appellate board is? Because you never know, any one of the people involved in the appeal could have been molested as a child. One can only imagine what their recommendations would be towards an institution that not only endorsed glorified and gave secret refuge to a child rapist but also howled in agony like a gutshot panther when caught red handed but also sent out lawyers for vengeance when they got a handslap as punishment.

Top tier educationl for top tier people my ass. They arent the least bit interested in cjanging a god damned thing culturally prevent a recurrance and havent learned a thing here.
