Garet Garrett: Dinki: Nice to see the dolt deliberately misinterpret the commercial to create some GOP outrage. The commercial quite rightly shows the consequences of plant closing and the very real effects those closings have on average Americans.

Plant closings cause the wives of people who were laid off to have health care coverage from other employers that they allow to lapse a few years later and then, a few years after that, to contract cancer that, untreated, leads to death?

Seriously, what's the policy message here? That people should never be laid off? This is perhaps the nastiest, most scurrilous attack ad I've ever seen, certainly at the national level.

The message is two fold: Romney wants people to die and Romney doesn't care how his policies hurt people.

His response should be very simple. Everywhere I've worked as the head man, I worked very hard for my constituency. At Bain, I worked for the shareholders and made them successful. At the Olympics, I made them a success. As Governor, Massachussets succeeded for Massachussettsians... And as your president, I will represent your best interests as my constituents as ably as I have in my other positions whether it was as CEO or appointee or governor.

They should be pounding that 3x for every "Obama gaffed big" ad about Obama claiming small business owners suck.

Obamacare would have helped this woman get and keep insurance despite her condition, and she likely would have chosen to get insurance despite not having any through her employer. The part that is distasteful is that it tries to relate the Bain lay-offs to her cancer, which is a bit of a "Butterfly Effect" as someone put it earlier.

Why is it distasteful?

Because the connection between the layoffs and her death is so far removed. I say this as a liberal/Democrat/Obama-supporter. The Republicans have done far worse, but it still troubles me to see this kind of attack by the Dems, which is just silly.

There's nothing wrong with illustrating the problems a family can face if they lose their health insurance, especially since Romney is promising to repeal the ACA on "day one". The fact that it was Bain who directly caused them to lose their insurance is just gravy.

How? The family still had health insurance from the wife's job. What "real effect" are you referring to?

If this is true, then the ad is a lie. It is saying Romney's decision cost her health insurance when she still had it. But, firing people is still overall an action that does lead to people losing health insurance even if the action of firing the person is necessary for the business to survive.

That said, Bain has acted in its own interest as a corporation should. And it's CEO did as well. I'm hoping that Romney will continue to act in the best interests of his new "corporation", the United States when/if he becomes CEO of it. Just like he did when he was CEO of the Olympics and of Massachusetts.

But, I don't know if Cheese is correct in his assertion.

Cheese is blanketing himself in partial information. From the husband's description of the plan, it sounds like the plan was incredibly inadequate. There are many plans that don't cover major medical. It sounds like hers was one of them. Regardless, she lost her insurance shortly after they lost his.

My insurance doesn't cover major medical. Hell, it won't cover surgery to get this giant, painful ganglion cyst removed from my wrist.

On a serious note: if someone's actions (say: buying some group a hundred rifles after they identified themselves as a drug cartel) can, and will, land you a sentence for conspiracy to cause some sort of physical harm to people, and it's already been proven that deaths can be prevented with better healthcare on a national scale, then yes. Cutting healthcare for people will lead to more deaths as surely as handing an arsenal to a drug cartel. And anyone that says they'll do it, and has every intention of doing it in such a way that they can alter the mortality rate to this degree, should be viewed as aiding and abetting in the killings on this scale.

If the number of people that would make the same mistake is lower in a regime of universal health care, its likely that it isn't quite that simple from a policy perspective.
