Even Sarah Palin couldn't save Sarah. "She'll defend your tax dollars like a momma grizzly defends her cubs." Seriously, that's the kind of thing we've been putting up with.

McCaskill caught a big break here. Akin was by far the weakest in the field, and has the largest amount of crazy derp that can be used against him, such as "the president is a menace to humanity", "student loans are like stage three cancer", and "we'd impeach the president, and we have great evidence, but we need a few more votes to do so".

Up through last weekend, Akin was polling behind Brunner, so either turnout was an issue, or Democratic efforts to troll the vote worked better than expected.

Or, just possibly, Missouri is batshiat insane.

I'd hate to admit that, but they may be batshiat insane

Remember, they were the people who almost killed all of Kansas over a bunch of slaves

similar thing here in nebraska: after a bruising primary, the GOP selected its most batshiat-insane teabagger to run against bob kerrey. sadly, even so, she'll probably still beat him. apart from omaha and lincoln, we're in the reddest of the red here...

Yeah, but I've driven through Nebraska--isn't Omaha and Lincoln like 90% of the population?

I love that Brunner lost. He threw millions of his own dollars at the campaign and has nothing to show for it.

I still dislike McCaskill for running against incumbent governor Bob Holden. That being said, she is definitely getting my vote against Akin.

fenianfark: I love that Brunner lost. He threw millions of his own dollars at the campaign and has nothing to show for it.

Still caught me off guard. He had the most money behind them out of all the big 3. The lastest poll from the Post-Dispatch showed him leading in the polls. Guess he got overconfident.

But Akin...*shudders*. I cant believe McCaskill has to compete against that. Shes down in the polls against him so now I'm a little worried.

I had to live with this guy as my representative. The stereotypical Tea Partier where hes against government spending, unless its something he likes (like defense). He insists that the defense budget has been unfairly targeted by budget cuts in the past and thinks the defense budget has been cut too much already!

The fact that Boeing has a big presence in his district is a mere coincidence I'm sure.

But hey, at least he loves God and Jesus. He wouldn't shut up about that when he was representative.

Didn't matter who won, McCaskill is going to lose. She is an Obamabot, got caught cheating on her taxes, and runs nursing homes that are the equivalent of a ghetto slum.

Akin always finishes second. I don't know why Republicans think anything will be different this time around.

do cows count?

omaha and lincoln do indeed account for most of the population. in 2008, the 2nd district - omaha - actually went blue for obama. not sure that'll happen this time, though.

Akin is my congressman and I hate him as much as the next sane person but he's going to beat McCaskill. She road Obama's coat-tails and I don't think there will be the enthusiasm to get her re-elected, remember, Obama didn't even win Missouri last time.

What sucks is that she's a pretty rotten democrat too. She kissed Obama's ass and he put her front and center on a lot of stuff around election time but once he got in office she ran to the right as hard and as fast as she could on almost everything.

FFS. This guy can't go 5 minutes without mentioning God. His acceptance speech last night sounded like he was running for Ayatollah. He's dumber than Palin, and more of a zealot.

You're probably right that he'll win since Missouri is proudly going more and more derp each year, but she was elected two years prior to Obama.

Sad thing is she's more fiscally conservite of the two. People in Missouri wont see that because of her being a democrat. Was asked yesterday why I hated America because I voted democratic and against amendment 2

Really seeing the effect of having consistently one of the lowest (if not rated last) education systems.

Maybe, just maybe, this all works out. either:

1. Akin's derp causes what few swing voters we have to reelect McCaskil
2. Akin wins, then spends 6 years embarrassing the state with his derp, leading to his eventual ouster.

I'd think one would be possible, maybe even likely if McCaskill hadn't been doing her level best at sucking so much over the past couple of years. She went way too far to the right like a bunch of the other Blue Dogs, thinking it would save her job, and look how that worked out for them in 2010. I get a headache even thinking about Akin winning, but I'm in no way excited about voting for McCaskill.

Option 2? Well, I don't recall any examples of this state being embarassed by derp, so maybe there's a first time for everything. But personally I think Missouri is lost to the far right. Nixon only hangs on because he was hugely popular as AG, but I think he'll be the last Dem in the Governor's office for a long time. You're simply not going to get a lot of Dems elected in statewide elections when they have to rely almost entirely on the KC and St. Louis metro areas.

I'm hoping that once people hear the grand plans of the GOP banner holders, it mobilizes the Dem base/freaks out the independents.

For Missouri, McCaskill has to focus on KC, St. Louis, Columbia and Springfield. The rest of the State won't vote for a Dem, so why waste your time?

Actually Nodaway county would just because of the University. It's pretty small though, only about 17000 or so votes total, Still in as close as this race may be, something not to neglect.

Forgot about the Momma bear add and support from Palin. Glad Steelman lost even though I voted for her.
You also realize that the state voted for the protection of religious freedoms even though that allows students to opt out of assignments. Something I voted against.

I knew that amendment would pass even though I voted against it. I commute from STL into southern rural areas for work ( I'm an educator ) and the passing of the amendment was hailed as a great win by quite a few people. It'll be interesting what this does for students and how it could eventually effect tests like End of Course exams. Then again, maybe kids will just opt out of those now...

/It'll eventually get overturned in court.
//We just have to deal with it in the meantime.

I think McCaskill ended up being crazy like a fox. She ran an anti-Akin ad when he was at the bottom of the back, attacking him for his "pro-family" agenda and for being "conservative."

Neither of those are bad terms in Missouri.

I think she might have actually been trying to drum up conservative support for Akin, the weakest of her possible opponents.

Cunning, if true.

Possibly... I thought her accusations seemed rather counterproductive, considering the target audience. I thought it a crappy ad, but your theory makes more sense.

I'm going with Democrats took the Republican ballot and voted up Akin. He was running third in any poll among Republicans so why not take a cue from the STL Post-Dispatch and get the weakest candidate elected.

A follow-up: Rachel Maddow also seemed to also think she did this on purpose, to choose her opponent.

She definitely was, and the STL Post Dispatch even ran an article on the ad a few week ago saying as much. I saw it once before reading the article and I thought it was a pro-Akin ad until the end and even that was pro-Akin depending on your point of view. If we're talking about the same one it ended with "Todd Akin, a true conservative. But TOO conservative for Missouri values."

WHOLE lot of people that saw that and thought, "Hell there ain't no think as too conservative."
