Certainly curious if the video is not fake.

My guess would be that it's the capsule with parachute that the lander dropped out of, on its way down.

Hmm.

bloobeary: My guess would be that it's the capsule with parachute that the lander dropped out of, on its way down.

The first series shows the object *ASCENDING* (ie., going "up"), and the second part shows the object travelling horizontally across the horizon.

I'm sure there is an explanation that doesn't involve some sort of alien species. Debris from the lander picked up by the wind, perhaps, or perhaps some issue with reflections off of the lander itself, combined with the setting sun.

I'd say "it's a streetlight," but that would mean Mars has streets, and beings that created them.

pfft! probably just a bug...

It's just a freakin' weather balloon, you hysterical ninny.

I had to watch it four times to see anything. Little shiny dot that goes left to right is w,hat we are looking at?

A artifact from the video compression?

My money would be on ball lightning:

It looks like ball lightning.

Lightning has been detected on Mars.

/or possibly a perspective issue with some bits of dust blowing around

Correct me if wrong, but NASA has released only still photos thus far. A search of their site shows only stills. When did they release this video?

2012-08-08 08:24:16 AM
Swamp gas. I have no idea what's on the video but I have swamp gas. Just an FYI there.

Sounds like they didn't, it "leaked" (so, yes, maybe just a hoax).

But NASA did release a "video" of the landing.

Mouth-breathing basement dweller photoshops white dot into succession of frames using the same single photo as background. Internet watches in awe and wonder, scratches its collective backside and sniffs its collective finger.

Could be one of the two Martian moons, Phobos or Deimos. Just putting it out there

Why the heck would they have the lander recording a 25fps video of nothing? That's an icredibly amount of data transfer for nothing that just happened to catch some pixels moving? Are the NASA engineers drunk?

It's so easy to just take the one frame and put some fake animation on top these days.

Honestly, that idea hadn't occurred to me at first, and I'm saddened that it didn't.

On Mars, the alien spaceship is Curiosity. Martians wouldn't be alien on their own planet.

I did a little image analysis of myself, and found this in the background:

Oh look what I found on the NASA website:

mars.jpl.nasa.gov

"This is one of the first images taken by NASA's Curiosity rover, which landed on Mars the evening of Aug. 5 PDT (morning of Aug. 6 EDT). It was taken through a "fisheye" wide-angle lens on one of the rover's rear Hazard-Avoidance cameras at one-quarter of full resolution. The camera is the right eye of a stereo pair located at the back left, or port, side of the rover.

Remember what happened here when a speck of dirt got on the last lander's camera lens?

It was like Jesus coming in for the Second Coming and everybody had front row seats.

NASA has yet to ever acknowledge or explain the above photo, so I really doubt we'll hear an explanation of that piddly UFO shot of a "dot"....

Nah that's one of those tiny white bugs that bite the crap out of you. We have lots of them in Florida. One probably hitched a ride. Tough little critter...

An object traveling towards the camera might appear to be moving "up" - especially considering the fisheye lens distortion.

Probably just a couple of camera craft heading back to Earth now that they've recorded the landing.

These are sent with every spacecraft, so you can have those outside shots.
