Isn't NYC / Long Island / New Jersey the most heavily trafficked for airplanes in the country? I can only imagine the problems that Obama flying out of JFK would have caused. I'm surprised it wasn't much more problematic.

Nice try, Obama, but you'll never be as good a President as Harrison Ford.

Yeah, right. It "strayed." Sorry Barry, maybe next time.

Misleading headline is misleading.

Actually, I sympathize. I always failed at this part of the game, too. Practice makes perfect, though.

/just don't practice with Air Force One

This is what can happen when yo don't check the NOTAMs before take off....

Oh boy, I can already see this being the basis of a RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: email about how Obama forced small aircraft pilots to change their plans due to his arrogance. It's going to be just like that chain email going around about how Obama "made" the Thuderbirds cancel their air show for the Air Force Academy graduation ceremony.

dittybopper and JackieRabbit already hinted at this, but here's my two cents.

This is one case where flight planning software just isn't current enough. Those NOTAMs you downloaded can be a couple of hours old.

If you're a pilot planning to fly on a given day, call 1-800-wxbrief. Talk to the nice briefer at Lockheed Martin Flight Service. TFR (Temporary Flight Restriction) NOTAMs can pop up at any time (within two hours of the TFR taking effect, IIRC). IF TFR=yes AND you still decide to fly, THEN you get a free fighter escort if your stupid is burning brightly enough.

//pilot PSA for the day - fly safely

So this usurper isn't content to just take over all our American land? He's going to take our air now too?

Also,

1. Make sure to give the briefer your route of flight, not just the departure and destination. Briefers have to tell you about TFRs within 50 miles of your route. At least one pilot has busted a TFR because they failed to give the briefer their actual routing, and the briefer assumed a straight line route.

2. Make sure to specifically ask for TFRs along your route. Get it on tape. The pilot's Bill of Rights now gives you the right to get the flight service tapes, which wasn't the case before, Lockheed Martin would only give you the tapes if it was in their interest to do so.

3. The new ADS-B in systems give TFR information in real time, in the air. A little pricy, but maybe worth it.

One of the biggest examples the failure of modern software designers. With machines millions of times more powerful than were available to the original programmers of aviation software they can't even write programs to match the old ones.

One scary thing I heard was that they were just going to give up and use satellite gps navigation. Just pray something does not knock out those satellites. Thousands of people would probably die in a few hours.

call flight service for a briefing, get info on the tfr...great, you have an out should they try to prosecute.

dont call flight service but got an online brief and bust a tfr...no sympathy.

/its at most a 5 minute insurance phone call before you fly...not that hard

I don't know the story on that photo, but I find it a lot funnier than the "Canadian Navy" rowboat w/machine gun or whatever pic that often finds its way into these threads.
