I agree with the old man in regards to the iPad: Mobile devices have just widened the gap between the content consumers and the content producers.

This is why books are useless - you only consume, instead of write your own.

Wise old guy quotes:

* Nothing is withheld from us which we have conceived to do.
* Do things that have never been done.

Good stuff even without knowing that the guy did.

Maybe you can sleep better at night if you start thinking of god as an abstraction that codifies the creativity inherent in each human.

They're trying to get everyone to use iPads and when people use iPads they end up just using technology to consume things instead of making things. With a computer you can make things. You can code, you can make things and create things that have never before existed and do things that have never been done before."

Most heartily agree. Don't own an iPad and don't want one. One of my brothers has one of the expensive things and it is cool, but actually limited. I use a laptop and a PC -- though my PC tends to be faster and enables me to add more memory than a laptop. Still, I can transfer information from the laptop to the PC and vise versa.

I use a basic cell, which can not download apps, not take pictures or videos, not connect to the internet and is used mainly for calls and voice mail. It costs me the tremendous and outrageous amount of $9.00 a month and right now I have 850 unused minutes left on it.

Folks will take the most magnificent technology ever, no matter what it is, dumb it down and use it basically as a toy.

Crudbucket: ongbok: And he is right, we have become far more of a society of consumers than creators.

As opposed to when? At what point in our society, or any human society, have people created more than they consumed?

For a while the internet looked like it was going to make everyone a creator. Then came Facebook and the iPad and all hope was lost.

Old dude who sounds bitter and living off his inventions from 60 years ago doesn't get modern computers. News at 11. He clearly doesn't understand that with the tools available today - there are legions of new inventors being created and they are using iPads to achieve that.

He needs to get over it.

I'm not going to argue with the guy who invented the computer

Yes - you can. Especially when he clearly doesn't get the modern age and playing you for a chump.

gingerjet is just a fanboy getting pissed because somebody made a negative comment about Apple.

mantidor: He did not invent the computer. His contributions seemed to have been very important, but the computer itself was created before, by many other people.

Maybe it wasn't Russell Kirsch himself but an impersonator, who knows?

Cool story nonetheless, but it sucks computing history is still so obscure, no mention of Turing? Von Neumann? That this guy didn't even know such basic info annoys me. (Not Kirsch, I'm pretty sure he knows who they are, the writer of course)

He didn't say the computer, he said the first internally programmable computer.

And he is right, we have become far more of a society of consumers than creators.
