(Corpus Christi Caller-Times)   Two years ago Lt. Phillip Bintliff saved two boys from drowning. Last year he rescued a woman in a submerged SUV. He's now being honored for saving the life of a young infant. He might just be doing his job, but he's damn good at it   (caller.com) divider line 51

Sounds like he's setting up these situations himself so he can play the hero. I'll bet you that he tossed the baby in the water himself, and then dove in after it.

Subby here. I was wondering how long it would take for someone to make that joke/observation. Actually, if he wasn't in line for super cop of the decade already, here's another article that mentions him taking a bullet, while trying to save the life of another officer that was shot in the head. Does this not happen as often as cops being asshats?

Doesn't matter.

There won't be any stories about where these kind of folks went to school, nor interviews with those that knew they were a decent person at that age.

There won't be any interviews with their work associates or neighbors, telling a tale about how awesome they thought the individual was before they saved somebodies life.

There won't be "experts" brought in to discuss what sets these individuals apart from "average" citizens, and what we can do to create more citizens like them.

There won't be film or television reps competing for rights to "the story".

There won't be any follow up reports months, or even years later.

Saving lives doesn't mean shiat, and barely warrants any coverage at all.

MURDERING motherfarkers, however......

Yea, THAT'S worthy.

It's because departments don't train their cops to function in this line. A lot of the training is about control of the civilian crowds, wearing mirrored sunglasses so they can't see your eyes, etc. For example at town we just hired in a former Chicago PD guy who was taught to always act like he's about to have a major angry episode so as to keep the civilians in line.

Based on our population we're supposed to have 12 full time police officers in my town according to whatever metric the police associations have come up with. We have 9 though. Two of them are older gentlemen who really are too old to be chasing criminals, etc. They run around and do welfare checks on the elderly, talk to the guy who calls 911 about lizard people, give talks at school, do some desk duty, etc. With the fact we're 5 full time officers under what we're supposed to have/our tax base supports, we can afford to send our 7 regular officers to get EMT training, firefighter training, K9 training, extra range time. We also pay above the industry average so no one poaches them. We have 5 single purpose dogs, and 2 multiple purpose dogs for the department, and an older one with a bladder problem that those old cops take around to let people pet/somewhat randomly pee on things. Every officer has a compact medical kit, fire suppressant, a respirator mask, and a heat resistant suit in his vehicle to go with the weapons and bulletproof vest. Homeland Security was somewhat pissed we opted to buy new medical kits as opposed to sniper rifles with their money, but hey life is tough and we actually need the medical kits (plus being in Michigan, the officers already had plenty of deer rifles on hand to press into sniper rifles if needed).

Anyway as such we push the idea that the officer is the first of the first responders. He'll get there while the firemen are still reporting to the station, or he'll be on patrol in the neighborhood whereas the ambulance is staged back somewhere further away. So the officers job is to respond quick, assess the situation for follow on units and do things like stop people from bleeding out or chewing off their own tongue until the ambulance arrives.

It is more expensive in that you need more money on training and insurance, plus sometimes you have to approve a shiatload of overtime since you have fewer warm bodies (or rent from another PD for special events) but it's worth it. Our officers make the paper for entering a burning home and rescuing a pregnant mother and her husband (she was overcome with smoke, husband went in to get her and was overcome as well, officer goes in with the mask on and drags them both out before the FD gets there). The department two towns over make it for beating a 16 year old over some weed and club drugs.

Basically demand your town council actually run the police force. On our council we approve all hires, policies, and training budgets. We make sure the department pushes the idea of being more of some kind of hybrid fire fighter, paramedic, social worker, enforcement officer as opposed to thug with mirrored sun glasses (mirrored sunglasses are actually banned in our handbook for the cops). There was some initial resistance but at the end of the day the cops actually said it has played out in their favor since they've found the locals respect them more and their interactions are more pleasant.

Also, single purpose K9 units. 4 to 8 grand depending on how much training you want for a unit. Plus some additional expense in that we have to issue everyone a SUV (although we were going to that anyways due to the fact it is Michigan and snow). You need the SUV because it is: front seat for the cops, middle area for the dog, third row for anyone you arrest. Hard to fit both a dog and a suspect in a sedan. Anyway the dogs calm the officers down since they can always pet the dog or take 15 minutes go play with it after a stressful call. The dogs also keep people the officer interacts with on better behavior since no one wants to get an assful of fangs. So we issue everyone a single purpose protection dog (so it will defend the officer). We also bought a couple multiple purpose ones that can bomb sniff since Homeland Security was biatching about our bomb detection ability. Of course Homeland Security wanted us to buy some kind of device that cost like 14 grand. As we issued dogs out (based on the officers completing K9 handling training) the job stress of the officer just dropped like a rock.
