I know my lappy "died" a few weeks ago.

Apparently it doesn't like drinking in malbec as much as I do.

"Market research firm IDC reported that PC shipments totaled 86.7 million units last quarter, down 0.1% from the year earlier period."

PC shipments down .1%? Disaster! The sky is falling! "Everyone" has stopped by PCs.

LOL

People are so intent on forcing the death of PC's that they go to these lengths to sow FUD.

PC's death has been stated for over a decade and a half.

As long as you need a PC to program a tablet, you're never going to get rid of a PC. Nor should you, because I don't know about anyone else, but I can't type on a tablet for shiat.

From what I've seen of Windows 8, I think Microsoft is trying to kill it

MaudlinMutantMollusk: From what I've seen of Windows 8, I think Microsoft is trying to kill it

More that, Microsoft is realizing that the real money isn't in the "operating system", it is in having a store that you control that is directly connected to the operating system that 99.9% of things running on the system have to be purchased through, and which of course you take a cut of the sales from. Purchasing software physically in a store will be pretty much dead in a few years, not that it isn't just about right now, but, Best Buy/Sams club/etc still have a software isle.

That is why the new Windows "looks" like an I-device or Android device.

I know every type of computer user... from geeks that need every new device, to my dad who's happy with his 5 year old PC and has no idea what to do with the Kindle we bought him. From accountants who use their work PC for one one application to programmers who use nearly hundreds of applications.

New devices like smartphones and iPads and all that will only be an augment to PC's. They'll always be around, and will always be necessary to upgrade.

2012-08-07 03:23:31 PM
I can't do my work with anything but two 27'' monitors and I don't like worrying about the farking battery so I don't really care about mobile devices. But most people just dick around on the net so a desktop PC might be overkill for them.

May I just say...FARK tablets.

That is all, thank you.

desktops might be slipping. Been pricing out a new family computer and laptop+docking station is often a better deal than a comparable desktop.

The FARK tablet really is top of the line. I just wish it would let me change the wallpaper from that squirrel.

PCs are a different product from a tablet or phone.

Dying? No. Shrinking, sure. Smart phones and tablets are going to be the way the typical non-geek facebooking and texting consumer reaches the internet.

I'll miss cheap desktop machines, I bought one last week.

Bwahahahahahaha... The thought of programmers using tablets conjures up some humorous images.

If I have my way, on my last day on the job, my parting act will be to buy all the programmers in our software development department tablets and take away their (multiple) desktops.

Personally, I've had to upgrade my PC less and less often as the tech got better.

When it was worth it to upgrade your PC so a photoshop file opens in 20 seconds instead of 40, there was some value there to dropping coin on new hardware. However, spending money so a file opens in 4 seconds instead of 8, well, its not really justifiable.

The law of diminishing returns comes into play.

Lumping PCs together as all Macs, Windows, and Linux machines weather, laptop or desktop, is actually the correct distinction nowadays. Other than some features and the OS, they essentially are all used for the same thing - to be productive in some manner. (Let's bring the acronym back to it's true form - Personal Computer)

This is where tablets and smartphones cannot replace the PC just yet. They are just really spiffy toys. If you want to actually produce anything more complex than a Facebook quote, you really need a PC. So they aren't going anywhere just yet.

That's my $.02...

The link in the article about PC gaming is more relevant, IMO. I am a staunch PC user but I have no need to upgrade either my laptop or PC because I simply don't play PC games any longer. I used to play the fark out of them even during the PS2 era. However, with the PS3 and Xbox, what do I need from a gaming PC?

Sure, I am playing Battlefield Lite, according to some, and I miss out on Diablo III and (even though my machine can handle it) Starcraft II, but I am fine with where consoles are. As such, as long as Chrome, Excel, and OOTP Baseball load up, I am a happy user.

Five years ago, I wanted a new computer five years ago!

Have been considering moving my back up rig and laptops two Ubuntu, and my primary rig stay on Windows 7.

But I agree with most, PC is not going anywhere, and until the idiotic end user (you know, the average joe that buys what Best Buy and TV commercials tell them to) learn that you need a PC/laptop to root-and-or-jail-break that little device they covet so much.

I really like my tablets, but I use them more for comfortable reading and video viewing. But when I want to get shiat done, I go to my old trust rig I built last year. And besides, building a PC is the best part!

The big media conglomerates would love for the PC to go away, along with the Internet. They'd rather you accessed networks controlled by them on machines owned by them, with an interface stripped down to a big button in the middle that says "BUY".

Time, CNN, and the NY Times Magazine will be promoting the "death of the PC" until it their last gasp.

It's not as if PCs are going away any time soon. If they are going away, it'll happen very slowly. Over the course of decades, not years. It remains true that it's hard to do work on anything but a PC, so that gives it staying power even in a technology field so rapidly changing with mobile devices

I'm waiting for the day when I can plug my phone into a dock and get a desktop-equivalent browser that can run google-docs or a desktop-level word processor, which I can control with a mouse and keyboard, and have it scale well to a 22-inch monitor. I believe that day is coming, but it's not today.

As someone who likes editing videos and graphics (more than hitting an "add sepia tone" button) it'll be a looooong time before I think about replacing my laptop or PC with a tablet.
