Last summer, my mother was in the ICU ward at the hospital in the last week or two of her life. The family was only allowed to have 2 people in her room visiting her at once. As we played swap, the family members who were waiting their turn were of course in the family lounge where there was a TV.

No one in the room really seemed to give a crap about what was on the TV, given the reason for us being there.

There was likewise another family in the same predicament, with 1 brother and 2 sisters, likely ranging from 48-56 in age. One of the sisters had two youngsters with her (grand kids) and in an effort to entertain them she changed the channel from Fox News to something more kid friendly.

The brother goes absolutely apeshiat on her, telling her that he was watching the news and that if she weren't so stupid she would be watching Fox news as well, because as he put it: "they're the only ones telling the truth about that commie bastard in the Whitehouse." Sister replies that she really didn't care about Fox news one way or the other, she was just trying to put on something to entertain a couple of kids who were bored out of their gourd. Brother launches into a rather loud, profanity-laced tirade on the sister, her grandkids, etc. telling her how ignorant she was and that those two stupid grandkids of hers were going to be ignorant just like her.

The woman literally left the room in tears, taking the kids and going down to the main floor waiting room to await her turn to see her mom. The brother just sits there - in all 350 lbs of dirty clothed and slightly smelly glory wallowing in his precious Fox News - only occasionally blurting out to no one in particular about that Commie Obama and what a dumbass his sister was. Needless to say, pretty much everyone in the room was appalled, but he didn't display a single clue as he thought anything he had done was inappropriate.

My sister and I later ran into the woman in the lobby about half an hour later, where she was still sobbing and asked if she were OK. (She recognized us as we had encountered each other for numerous days before this incident in the waiting room) She just shook her head and said that her brother was the oldest and used to beat her and her sister regularly when they were kids. That he beat his own kids to the point that none of the will have anything to do with him, that he was an alcoholic with 3 ex wives, etc, etc. (it just seemed to come pouring out of her)

It was then that I understood who Fox News audience really was.

Statistically speaking, hardly anyone from my school would come forward to say the remember me - certainly none of the people I am still friends with because none of them are attention whores. In one way true, but given the guys demeanor, I have little doubt that ANYTHING said to him would have most certainly resulted in fisticuffs. Given the circumstances and the surroundings, it was the one place and time to let something go. The last thing I needed to do was risk being unavailable at a time when it was my mom's last hours on earth.
