Thanks for the negative profits, Nokia/RIM/etc.

I'm currently arguing with myself on which one to buy - the SGS3 or the iPhone 5

FTA:The striking figure was made possible, the analysts explained, by competitors such as BlackBerry maker Research In Motion, Nokia, Motorola and Sony posting operating losses during the June quarter.

Other companies posting losses does not increase your company's profits, nor does it increase your market share. Unpossible.

Shouldn't they say revenues, and not profits. Aren't profits by definition positive?

My boss hates his SGSIII. Viscerally.

// if it's anything like the original Galaxy, it'll freeze at least twice a day, and require more juice than Barry Bonds' sparring partner

Considering that the iPhone 5 doesn't exist yet I would go with the SGS3 or the iPhone 4S (which is technically the 5th iPhone version).

/and I think its a pretty safe bet the new iPhone will be called The New iPhone

Do you have a microSD card on which you store data?
Do you enjoy customizing your phone, even a little bit?
Do you enjoy making successful phone calls?
Do you buy phones for their usefulness instead of their perceived societal value?
Do you hate the unholy abomination that is the iTunes software?

I think you know where I'm going with this.

/please note, I don't even like Samsung phones. Their interface is cartoonish and their build quality is shiat
//still better than an iPhone

I have a Galaxy Nexus and it's awesome. The GS3 feels a little too big too fragile for me.

Also, it's got that damned Samsung proprietary shell that just sucks the joy out of Jelly Bean.

As far as being fragile goes, who doesn't buy 3rd party shells for these things, anyway? Also, Jelly Bean isn't available for the GS3 yet (officially at least).

Sorry, ICS. It's still got that TouchWiz shell over it though.

Headslap for you, midigod, and subby.

Income (ie profits) can be positive or negative. Apple and Samsung made, say, $10.8b. Nokia et al lost 800m during the same period. Total profit for the industry as a whole were $10b. Therefore apple and Samsung, combined, earned 108% of total industry profit for the period.

This again. I finally got sick of waiting for Verizon to release JB and rooted my GNex...so friggin great. Running ParanoidAndroid, and completely happy.

My friend has the S3 and while its real nice, I don't see it as that much better of a phone to justify the cost of buying one off contract to keep my unlimited data.

I have one. If you're boss hates it phones may not be his thing. Never freezes. Lighting fast.

My iphone contract is up at the end of this month. Think I'm going to jump to Android. Question is...SG III or HTC One X?

(If the Nexus were more up to date, it would be a no-brainer for me. But as it stands, its specs seem to be about a notch below both the Sammy and HTC...)

I heard rumors of a new Nexus device before the end of the year. If that turns out to be the case, personally I would get an SGS3, that way you could sell it for a much higher cost when the new Nexus rolls out.

If you're ok with the current Samsung S III specs, wait a few months and get the latest Nexus phone. I've had the HTC Evo 3D for a year now, and while I like it a lot, I will never buy a phone with a manufacturer skin again.

The Nexus is nice because it doesn't have all the Samsung TouchWiz crap smeared all over the clean Android UI. Also, you can get some nice deals on the Galaxy Nexus. The downside is that you don't get LTE unless you go for the Verizon version, and that one doesn't get Android updates in a timely manner like the GSM variants that are already on Jelly Bean. Also, Verizon is still blocking Google wallet on their Nexus.

The author of the article, Canaccord Genuity, and the commenter at the article "explaining" how 108% profit share is possible need to have this part of your post tattooed backwards on their forehead.

Unless Nokia, RIM, et al are paying people to take their phones then we are talking profits not revenues.

108x/100x is still 108% regardless of what subby might think. Profits, losses, everyone else's IQ compared to Subby's is a label that doesn't affect to the ratio.

read the article again. market share has nothing to do with it.

they are speaking of the share of the industry PROFIT. if the entire industry makes less than your company made (including you) your percentage of the industry profit will be higher than 100 percent.

This is basic math people. Dont over think it.

No it isn't. It still refuses to install even if I try to push it to the phone via the web. Whoever reported that it was is either incorrect, or they were able to take advantage of a temporary blip in the Play Store where it was seeing the Verizon version as a regular Galaxy Nexus.

And how is what I said derp? I HATE TouchWiz. It needs to be killed with fire, so it is a huge advantage of the Galaxy Nexus right now. The Nexus also doesn't have the unfortunate button layout of the GS III, where they swapped the dedicated multitasking button of ICS with the Menu button, so you have to hold the Home key to task switch. I'm simply stating the opinion, which I think is pretty reasonable, that although the GS III is a great piece of hardware, the Galaxy Nexus is still a good choice if you want to save a few bucks, don't need the absolute latest and greatest hardware, and want a much cleaner Android experience. ICS and Jelly Bean are to the point now where adding a skin really detracts from the appearance and functionality of the OS. I'm actually really glad that MOTOTBLUR seems dead as of the new Atrix HD, which seems to stick really close to the stock appearance of ICS (aside from a few ugly widgets that Moto added). Hopefully more manufacturers will follow suit, so users will get a more consistent Android experience than they have previously,

A friend of mine has an S3. Seems fine, not much to differentiate from my S2 in terms of user experience. The screen is a bit bigger and it's a bit faster is all.
