I don't get the headline. If something is suspicious, it should be investigated. Why would subby conclude that the IRS isn't sure it's suspicious?

I like the process just the way it is. Send out the W2s in January. Receive the tax forms in April. People get their refund checks in May. Spend the other seven months finding fraud.

I don't want to have to wait six months for my refund check while I wait for them to eyeball my tax form.

My mother was one that had a fake return filed for her. I was the one that reported it to the IRS. Months later they sent a letter saying she wasn't going to get her $4,000 refund on the taxes taken out on her $80,000 income (or whatever the numbers were). She was 95 at the time and in a nursing home.

I'll bet dollars to donuts the Florida Medicaid has someone selling identities. It would be nice to find that someone and have a little chat with 'em out back of the barn.

As someone who had their identity stolen and used to file a return with the IRS, I say we find these people and shove lava up their asses.

It took more than a year to prove to the IRS that I was who I said I was, and that was even WITH having all of the paperwork to prove it.

While I agree no one wants to wait around for there money stories like these scream the fact something needs to be changed:

In one example, investigators found a single address in Lansing, Mich., that was used to file 2,137 separate tax returns. The IRS issued more than $3.3 million in refunds to that address. Three addresses in Florida, the epicenter of the identity theft crisis, filed more than 500 returns totaling more than $1 million in refunds for each address.
In another troubling scenario, hundreds of refunds were deposited into the same bank account - a red flag for investigators searching for ID thieves who may be filing for refunds for multiple people. In one instance, the IRS deposited 590 refunds totaling more than $900,000 into one account.

Wanted for questioning

Step 1: Open a few foreign shell corporations.
Step 2: Use one of those foreign shell's to open a Delaware corporation and bank account.
Step 3: Use the Delaware corporation to lease a property where you have a large number of tax returns go.
Step 4: Stitch the money back and forth between your shell corporations to make it improbable to trace the money to you at the end.
Step 5: Pay yourself a royalty or capital gains from a foreign shell investment so you can have freshly laundered income you can pay lower taxes on. Or better yet, use that shell to pay your expenses while keeping your actual income fairly low.

You sure that's fraud? It's Florida. I've seen almost that many Cubans living in one place. Or could be Appalachian cousins.

Did the IRS also send 714 refunds to that address?
And why doesn't Congressional budget cuts reduce Congressional salaries?

There's an easy solution to that last part: don't get a refund. Pay less during the year. It's a bit silly to let the IRS hand onto your money for months and months each year anyways.
