At this point I'm almost wondering if they just hired Trashcan Man.

What a weird coincidence, the thing goes up in flames just days after they took out that surprisingly large fire insurance policy.

/note: I don't have any actual knowledge of their insurance coverage

Gas prices: they go up like a rocket and come down like a feather.

Broken pipeline last week in Michigan....the gas prices go up in New Jersey. Makes sense to me.

My cousin is working at the nearby Valero factory tonight. I live in Newark, about 30 miles south of here but the East Bay hills tend to deflect the winds coming off the ocean and send them south in my direction so I don't know how worried I should be. I walked my dog earlier tonight and I could see some haze, but I thought it was just the normal East Bay haze. It doesn't seem to be any harder to breathe so that's good.

There was at the Chevron refinery near were I live a few years ago; a compressor failed and they did a controlled burn through a smokestack to relieve pressure.

It was pretty cool standing a mile away seeing a gigantic flame (50 ft high at least) shooting out of the smokestack.

Good: filled up at Costco this afternoon
Bad: have a 140 mile round-trip daily commute

Anyone want to play The Price is Right on CVX's opening price tomorrow? Closest opening price without going UNDER wins. It closed at 111.31 today.

I'm in at $79.57.

This is some seriously toxic stuff. Not so much kill you outright, more like the cause-disease-for-the-rest-of-your-life type. Just because you can still breathe it doesn't mean it's healthy. Burning crude is bad news.

Yep. Gas is up back fifty cents from just a few weeks ago. I think they've given up making excuses.

I never understood the rationale... It's like a single Good Humor truck in Ohio catching fire and suddenly the cost of push-up pops goes up to 10 dollars as an after-effect.

/yes, I know it's all about profit

Labor Day is coming up. They always run up the prices before 'driving' holidays.

After that, they'll drop prices a bit before running them up again because of the switch to 'winter gas'.

You know what pisses me off? It's when I go to the gas station and feel that gas prices any higher than $3.31/gallon is not a fair deal, and THEN some goon with a loaded firearm comes out and forces me to buy gas at $3.65 AGAINST MY WILL.

Why there oughta be a law....

Yay! Way to go Chevron! Wonder what Condi Rice has to say about this.

I had a daily commute of 200 miles, which I managed to get down to 140 miles by finding the roads in the hypotenuse. It was a case of "I should be done here in 9 months" which stretched into 18. Had I known it was going to take 18 months up front I would have gotten an apartment up there and come back to civilization on the off days.

/Now I don't work for anyone else.
//Now all my work miles are tax deductible.

I bet $108.00.

Downstream operations have a pretty trivial effect on the majors. The vast majority of their profit comes from crude. This is also why companies that primarily just refine oil (i.e. tesoro, valero) have gotten hammered in the stock market the past few months.

Of course there's a lot of negative PR with this and there will be frivolous (at least at this point) lawsuits filed, so those will hurt.

Thanks to that we're paying $0.37 a gallon above the national average here in America's High-Five. Paid $3.99 today on my way home from work, the gas station closest to my house was charging $4.17.

Pfffffttt. You should see what happens when the windmill farms overheat or the solar power plant melts down. Gasoline is child's play.

Yeah, just walk 30 miles to work, pussies. And it's not like gas prices effect the price of food and that people can just forgo eating.

Makes me homesick - used to love sitting in my room gazing out over East Richmond Heights, looking through the fog & haze at the Golden Gate Bridge and the ever rising smoke of Standard Oil's (now Chevron) stacks.

Actually had a neighbor who worked there as an exec. They had a really nice Rod & Gun club down there - big swimming pool, picnic area - you just didn't want to take a lot of deep breaths.

Also, if you happened to want to leave that area of North Richmond, it was usually recommended that you do so without a lot of lolly-gagging. North Richmond when I grew up was one of the worst areas per capita for violent crimes. Now I think it's moved more towards the center of town - the "iron triangle" - and gang activity replaced the generic violence.

Wow they're running late this year. The "Summer Driving Season" is nearly over.

First thing that came to mind was that prices would go up.

Oh, and what's ironic is that on the walk I took right before I first found out about this explosion I was looking at these trees that were bent to one side, clearly the result of prevailing winds. "Wow, the wind definitely blows from the north around here!" I said. Then when I got inside I find that just 37 miles (I looked it up) north of here is a crude oil refinery on fire. shiat.

It's a good excuse! They can use it to pay themselves multimillion dollar bonuses as well.

Yup, Point Richmond. I'm stuck in the bar all night because AC Transit stopped running the buses out here, BART closed the Richmond station, and no way am I paying for a taxi.

And hey, beer!

Richmond again?

*clicks link*

Yup. Richmond again.

Seriously this is like what...the third major fire at that refinery in the past 10 years? Chevron needs to seriously upgrade that plant; I think it's still using safety features that were put in back when the company was Standard Oil.

Learn from PG&E's fark up, Chevron: don't skimp on the safety inspections.

Goddamn people, and I hated that I have a 35 mile one way commute for 3 months.
