ShawnDoc: Growing up, I always thought this was a comment on how the US Government would "give" land to the Indians via treaty, and then take it back when settlers wanted it or oil/gold/whatever was discovered on it.

But apparently that's wrong.

That was my impression as well: that it's more derogatory towards the Government than to Indians.

*shrug*

The_Time_Master: Why is this a bad phrase against anyone but White males? You know, the ones who gave to the native americans and then took the same away from them under the guise of eminent domain?

You may want to look it up.

Indian giver is an expression used to describe a person who gives a gift (literal or figurative) and later wants it back, or something equivalent in return.

The term "Indian gift" was first noted in 1765 by Thomas Hutchinson, and "Indian giver" was first cited in John Russell Bartlett's Dictionary of Americanisms (1860) as "Indian giver.[1][2] When an Indian gives any thing, he expects to receive an equivalent, or to have his gift returned." Thus it was really an exchange of gifts and not a matter of selflessness.

Etymology

It is unclear exactly how the expression came to be, but the consensus is that it is based on American Indians having a distinctly different sense of property ownership than people of European ancestry.[citation needed] One theory is that early European settlers in North America misinterpreted the aid and goods they received from local Indians as gifts, when in fact they were intended to be offered in trade. Many tribes operated economically by a form of barter system, or a gift economy, where reciprocal giving was practiced.[5]

"Indian giver" comes from when Native Americans would give white settlers gifts.

The Native American tradition is for a gift to be passed along to others, so when the Native Americans saw that white people would just put the gifts on the shelf, they would go and take it back so they could give it to someone else.

It's a term he grew up with in his childhood. He might be an ass-clown, but sometimes things you grew up with as acceptable just slip out from time to time. Like your penis at what you thought was an orgy, but just turned out to be a lingerie fashion show.

MagSeven: calbert: namatad: who the fark uses "indian giver" these days???
LOL

coco ebert: I'd never even heard of that phrase.

strangely enough, that phrase came up yesterday when some people at the bar I was at were talking about the Sikh temple shootings.

Someone asked what Sikhism is... and India came up... and somebody said Indians... and somebody said 'dots or feathers'... and then someone said no, the correct distinction is 'casinos or 7-11s'... and then people started talking about giving Indian burns... and someone demonstrated what an Indian burn was... and then Indian giver came up... and then we talked about Wayne and Garth finally getting their Sports Illustrated football phone.

Gandhi or Sitting Bull.

Domestic or Imported.

Casino or call center?

Little known fact (among non-Indians): that dot on the women's forehead is essentially a lottery ticket. On their wedding night, the husband scratches it off to see if he won a 7-11, Dunkin' Doughnuts, or an anesthesiology practice.

Indian giver is more of a slur against white people than it is against Native Americans.

It refers to the ignorance of whites who believed that the things given to them by the Native Americans were "gifts" and not what they really were: Barter offerings.

In other words, it's as much a way to say "I'm too dumb to recognize a trade when I see it" as it is to say "Someone who gives you a gift and then takes it back, later."

If European whites weren't so stupid and arrogane, they'd have realized they were being offered trade goods, not honorific gifts.

As if they invented any of that. In thousands of years, not one of them in this entire hemisphere could ever even invent the wheel or metallurgy (other than making jewelry from soft metals).

Indian giver - I believe it has to do with the way Native Americans would initiate trade with others; Europeans thought they were gifts and were irritated by how the 'gifts' (rather, unaccepted trade items) were taken back

Indian summer - I believe this is because warm weather reappearing in autumn presaged increased danger on the frontier, as threatening Native tribes might start attacking again.

Lionel Mandrake: Is "Indian Summer" still OK to say? It sort of implies sneakiness, so I'm not sure.

From his pipe the smoke ascending
Filled the sky with haze and vapor,
Filled the air with dreamy softness,
Gave a twinkle to the water,
Touched the rugged hills with smoothness,
Brought the tender Indian Summer
To the melancholy north-land,
In the dreary Moon of Snow-shoes.
