Growing up, I always thought this was a comment on how the US Government would "give" land to the Indians via treaty, and then take it back when settlers wanted it or oil/gold/whatever was discovered on it.

But apparently that's wrong.

I have used it at times. I have no problem using it, just not something that fits in a sentence typically.

strangely enough, that phrase came up yesterday when some people at the bar I was at were talking about the Sikh temple shootings.

Someone asked what Sikhism is... and India came up... and somebody said Indians... and somebody said 'dots or feathers'... and then someone said no, the correct distinction is 'casinos or 7-11s'... and then people started talking about giving Indian burns... and someone demonstrated what an Indian burn was... and then Indian giver came up... and then we talked about Wayne and Garth finally getting their Sports Illustrated football phone.

The term "Indian giver" refers to someone who gives a present and then wants it back, and is offensive to Native Americans.

"Indian giver" comes from "Indian gift" the practice of "equal trade." It started off as a way for white people to understand that this was a transaction. So in order for it to make any kind of sense as an insult, the giver in question would be the one giving to and taking from the Indian, not the other way around. Anybody could tell you that the only people who have ever been consistently screwed on transactions and gifts are the Native Americans, not the Anglos.

But yeah, as mentioned above, who the hell says "Indian giver?"

Did crayola ever retire "Indian Red?" I still have a couple of those from back in the day. Maybe it's Burnt Sienna, now (which is offensive to pornstars, I think).

Lauer's a lib, he'll just walk away from it and the rest of the media will say nothing about his racist remark.

If a Republican had said this, Lauer would be one of the first to demand he resign in disgrace.

NBC is known to act nubianrdly. Lauer needs to be sure there are no chinks in his contract. If they make him mad he can drive his car back and forth in front of their office, getting all honkey.

Is it OK to talk about when I suffered from Gyppie tummy. You know, Montezuma's Revenge? The Trotskies?

How about the Indian who drank too much tea and drowned in his tea pee?

Why is this a bad phrase against anyone but White males? You know, the ones who gave to the native americans and then took the same away from them under the guise of eminent domain?
