Manjoo points out that these judgements don't apply to older people who were already productive adults before social media became widespread.

I find it hard to believe some younger people don't have valid reasons for being on Facebook and Twitter. Maybe they just think it sucks.

In a few years people who don't use social media will be viewed in the same light as people who move to the woods to avoid the big nasty Govt!!!

Speaking of terrible people, it's lovely to see Facebook is forcing the ugly-ass Timeline on me. I thought I had avoided it, but alas, no.

In the future, you won't be able to prove you exist if there aren't pictures of you getting trashed on Facebook.

Ha ha, the myth that older people can be productive has once again raised it's ugly head.

So all those people not on the internet at all must be crazy as fark?

Nice try. I'll file that with 'If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear'.

In the meantime, a new law was just passed requiring sex offenders to 'list their status' on Facebook.

"Psychologists have noted that Holmes, along with several noted mass murderers, have lacked any real friends." lmao

Right. Because every friend someone has on Facebook is real.

The German magazine Der Taggspiegel went so far as to point out that accused theater shooter James Holmes and Norwegian mass murder Anders Behring Breivik have common ground in their lack of Facebook profiles.

Yes, lets look to the Germans to learn about mass murderers.

When they make it seem like there's something wrong with you if you don't post all your personal data for all to see, it will just make it easier for them to collect all the data they want about the sheep who believe this bullshiat.

I do not get this at all. Why do you care about the timeline? I hardly ever go to the page that shows my timeline. Usually only because I want to find a photo I uploaded somewhere, and even then I immediately click on "Photos".

I go here to check on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=lf

Since it's election season, I've had to put about half of my cousins on the "don't unfriend but don't show the stupid shiat that they're posting either" setting.

If that option did not exist, then I would have gotten rid of my facebook account.

Let's see...joined facebook a few years ago, said hello to a few people I hadn't seen in a while, saw no further need for it and stopped

Am I a sociopath?

Employers say being on Facebook is good and then they say it's bad. Catch 22?

Also, my Facebook is deactivated, and I hardly ever use my Twitter. Does that make me a sociopath?

Protip: Any company that wouldn't hire you because you don't have a Facebook account is a company you want to stay way the hell away from anyway, so this is not a problem.

Face-to-face communication is still the best in my view. Phones are second, and then text is third.

Communication technology distances people from each other just as easily as it bridges them together.

No. Louisiana tried to prohibit sex offenders from using social networks at all, but that law was struck down. So now they're just making it suicidal to be a sex offender with a Facebook page. IF you have a social network page, it must include your crime, your physical description, and your residential address, among other things.

BarkingUnicorn: IF you have a social network page

Do they have to define exactly what constitutes a social network page? Or list the known pages? I wonder how they enforce this.

Pretty much this. Some companies are nice enough to make "liking" their page and leaving them a comment a requirement of the application process, "to see if you're paying attention." I know not to bother sending in my resume.

I signed up a friendster account, of which I may or may not know the log in or password to. Why would I need another social networking account?

Question: Wouldn't a real sociopath be aware that he's not like "normal" people, and thus create a Facebook account to keep up the illusion that he's just like everyone else?

Not only that, but it's great for stalking people.

I like Facebook. It gives me another tool to spread hate and discontent against politicians as I brighten the day by sharing cute cat pictures.

Is Facebook really good for anything other than trying to hook-up with 32 year old married moms that you went to high school with? I mean, its farking great for that, don't get me wrong, but do people actually use it for other stuff too?

Forbes.com reports that human resources departments across the country are becoming more wary of young job candidates who don't use the site.

'If you're of a certain age and you meet someone who you are about to go to bed with, and that person doesn't have a Facebook page, you may be getting a false name. It could be some kind of red flag,' he says.

When I'm out, conversations that take place without facebook being mentioned are becoming more and more rare. It's a bit depressing somehow.
