Holly is a poison--I mean the latin name even indicates it's use for VOMITING. Caffeine however..not really what they were going for.

They ate their own sh*t too, to survive harsh winters, because they were too busy digging random holes in the ground looking for gold instead of learning from the American Indians about how to grow crops.

RTA. The discovery is location and dating.

Were there hallucinogens involved? The only 'vomit drink' I'm aware of today is from boiling down a certain variety of cactus. Legal if brown goo, illegal if boiled down to crystalline form.

Actually the 'people ate their own sh*t' tidbit came from "You Will Die: The Burden of Modern Taboos," all you clowns should read it, order the 3rd edition -- the first edition with real, actual pictures instead of sketches by the author to avoid possible copyright infringements -- at suburra.com.

Fun with the black drink made of yaupon (a specific type of holly)?

*checks article*

Yup, fun with the black drink made of yaupon holly. (And yes, this was actually a traditional part of purification rituals in Southeastern First Nations in particular. Not mentioned: Black drink would clear you out BOTH ends.)

And this bit of knowledge actually led to minor hilarity once in an (Old World of Darkness) WW:tA campaign--someone read up on yaupon and the rulebook described it as...and I quote..."A refreshing caffeinated tea". My reply: "Maybe if you wanted to keep up PUKING--that's pretty much the main ingredient in the black drink which your average Uktena would use for a purification ritual!"

/seriously, don't game producers who base clans of Earth Firster Puppies on supposed First Nations knowledge do so much as read a book of old formulas that tell you HOW to make the black drink if you needed a good puke?
//Yes, formulas still exist on how to make the stuff. (Have had NO particular urge to get THAT deeply into my ancestral ways thank you very much, I'll just take some Nutrasweet if I need to puke THAT badly)
///Cahokia is right in the middle of black-drink-purging central, so this is not really all that surprising

So, Four Loko is *that* ancient?

/submitted this with a better headline

2012-08-07 12:35:16 AM
And in all fairness to White Wolf--it does look like they confused yaupon (aka the main ingredient in the black drink) with yerba mate (made from a different species of holly, and which IS a refreshing caffeinated beverage)--it's just a case where a bit of knowledge was just dangerous enough on their part that it made me head-desk :D

I guess if you brewed it very, very weakly (nowhere near the concentration of your average gourdfull of mate), you could probably drink yaupon without puking, but no idea why you would want to :P

You can buy the dried stuff at the San Luis Misson gift shop in Tallahassee. It was pretty nasty tasting, even with sugar.

Rapid consumption of large quantities of the hot drink preceded ritual vomiting as part of the purification rituals.

We still do that today, only now we call it binging and purging.

///Cahokia is right in the middle of black-drink-purging central, so this is not really all that surprising

Is... Is this in English?

Believe it or not, yes:

a) Cliff's Notes version of article--they've found the earliest evidence of the ritual use of "black drink" in Cahokia, a site associated with some of the more advanced "mound builder" peoples of ancient America. (More on Cahokia here if you're interested--archeologists are learning Cahokia was surprisingly advanced.)
b) "Black drink" is a ritual beverage that was in use then, and has had use within historic times among several Southeastern First Nations, as basically a ritual purge to "clean you out" before major religious ceremonies. The evidence found shows that Cahokians probably used it in the same manner as, say, the Cherokee or Creek peoples did. At least some Cherokee formularies (kept by traditional medicine workers) do list how to use the black drink and how to make it and even some herbals list the use of yaupon (a specific type of holly) in making said ritual purge.
c) White Wolf Games produced a tabletop roleplaying game (Werewolf: the Apocalypse) that focused on what amounted to werewolves with a fair amount of Magical Native American flavour in the tribes supposedly kin to various First Nations--including a tribe of werewolves (the Uktena) named after a serpent-dragon monster in Cherokee mythology. One of their sourcebooks for the game was a little lacking in research--they confused yaupon (the type of holly used in the ritual purge above) with yerba mate (made from a different kind of holly and enjoyed by Argentinians around the world)...not really two things good to confuse. (It's not quite on the level of "he'll be in trouble when the oil hits the anus" bad, but it'd definitely be the difference between 5-Hour Energy and a shot of syrup of ipecac.)
d) Having researched both herbalism (as a bit of a personal hobby) and at least some traditions of Southeastern First Nations and being familiar with what yaupon was/is used for, the confusion in c) caused me physical pain to the point of facepalming :D
