God knows they apologized, subby. As long as God knows, what does it matter who else does? God has forgiven them, and in the end that's the only forgiveness that matters.

most houses of worship have a very few key local families/parishioners with deep pockets. those fat donations are very powerful. usually those families are also the most widely found name in the local cemetery because they've been around from before the town was established. their relatives are everywhere in the town limits and they have their finger in every business.

too bad they suck at being human beings.

He said only one or two people from the church have contacted him in recent weeks, and they did so personally and not as representatives of the church.

Yeah, it was the church and its congregants who pulled this crap. The reverend himself did apologize to the couple for his backwards congregants and married them himself, albeit in a different church. But for the church itself to go out there and say... But but, WE apologized! The reverend apologized and he speaks for all of us... then why the hell didn't you listen to the reverend in the first place before it became a national shiatstorm?

If someone had tried to tell me that I could not marry my wife in a church because she is black there is NO WAY that that person would be performing the ceremony, period.

When I was around 11 or 12 my parents started regularly going to a Baptist church with a wonderful preacher,he really was amazing, but then he left and a new preacher came. The very first sermon he decided to put down other religions, yeah Jehovah's Witnesses are kinda odd but that's not appropriate at all. That was the last time my family went to church. I do believe that was what completely soured me on religion. Well not to mention why my fiance wont go to church. When he was a kid he had a seizure at the church his family went to and the church told them not to come back because he was faking and just causing trouble. Yes a child with epilepsy who is having a tonic-clonic seizure is faking. fark organized religion. Maybe if they practiced what they preached they wouldn't be such shiatbags. Not to mention that church in Ky that wouldn't marry Ticha and his fiance. That absolutely pissed me off to no end. I met Ticha when he was going to college with my sister and he was so soft spoken, polite and nice. They had no right treating him that way.

/No seriously fark organized religions and so called "christians" who won't follow the word of their own farking savior.

You don't need to guess. They're Southern Baptists, that's EXACTLY what they believe. Belief in works leads to a sense that you can deserve grace, which you can't, so works are heretical. And since actually doing good works might cause somebody to confuse you with a papist, you should avoid them at all costs.

I'm guessing it goes something like this over at that church:

"See what we have here is failure to communicate. Listen here Tyrone, or Trayvon, whatever your made up name is, we said we apologized and it's not for YOU to decide if we did it properly. If you know what's good for you, you'll just play along and keep that uppity mouth of yours shut and not talk badly about your betters... boy."

I think that covers everything.

I had my bridal shower yesterday. I brought this story up because I am black and my fiance is white. They hadn't really heard the story. I explained to my guests what had happened. Then I explained to them that I loved them because no one ever said a word about our interracial status. It never occurred to me that someone WOULD object. I told them that the reason that I love them like my family is because this scenario never entered my mind because the members of our church would NEVER even think to do something like this. You obviously don't know how a lot of these churches work. While most churches submit to an overall governing body (Southern Baptists, Assemblies of God, ect), they are generally run on the local level. These governing bodies typically only step in to fix things in cases of several abuse. Deacons, elders (basically the senior members of the church) choose, vote on, decide their pastors' salaries, and can and do fire them if they are or aren't doing something.

While a lot of churches are quite despicable nowadays, there is something to be said for accountability and in the past I've generally shied away from churches who don't submit to such a governing body. Churches that are run by pastor-families, ect... this is where you can find the worst corruption.

As others have said, though, this pastor was a total puss. He should've stood up for the couple.

Aka James 2:14-17
"14 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? 15 Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. 16 If one of you says to them, "Go in peace; keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead."

"The Wilsons have said that Weatherford, the pastor, told them he could be fired if the wedding was held in his church."

I'm not believing that for a second. It was only a small group of people, estimated to be 5-6 individuals, who made a fuss. The majority of the members were upset that the couple was treated the way they were. What that weak willed pastor should have done was to tell those individuals "I'm going to go ahead with having the wedding in this church and if you don't like it, you're free to find another church."

I'd also like to ask those individuals how they justify making the fuss they did to start with.

I've been doing a little more research. Apparently the SBC governing body doesn't have as much authority over the local church as I originally thought it did. They can't step in to clean up (whereas other denominations might have that authority). You'd have to check each of their constitutions and bylaws to see what the councils are and aren't allowed to do. But the SBC can really only air a statement to officially condemn them. The local church is completely autonomous and has complete authority over its own affairs.

Honestly, I'm not sure if the SBC -can- expel them... It seems more likely that the local church would break away from the SBC. Perhaps someone who's more familiar with the SBC than I can comment.

I might do more research but it's too early for that now.

Then I explained to them that I loved them because no one ever said a word about our interracial status. It never occurred to me that someone WOULD object. I told them that the reason that I love them like my family is because this scenario never entered my mind because the members of our church would NEVER even think to do something like this. My daughter and I are the only black people in that church (actually, almost in the entire town). We are going to be the first interracial couple ever married there. Nobody even blinked an eye.

My wife is black and I'm a white dude. Very rarely has anyone ever given us a hard time; however, we do get odd looks and double takes. It is very irritating when I am asked "are you together" when we go out to dinner; which never happened in my prior marriage (to a white woman). But no family member objected, no one has ever refused us any sort of service, nothing like that. Just an occasional disapproving look whenever we run into an idiot out somewhere.

Thumbs up for being open minded enough for an interracial marriage. As my wife likes to say, be willing to "taste the rainbow".

ciberido: Pray 4 Mojo: I wouldn't marry a black couple.

To whom do I apologize?

Maybe you could try apologize to yourself for failing to live up to your potential to be a decent human being.

Or you could try apologizing to the entire world, instead, perhaps, but that's not usually much fun. Just ask Wowbanger.

The joke... you missed it.

/Granted... it wasn't all that funny.

In all fairness I must give those worthless ignorant tosspots a modicum of credit. At least they took the time to craft their signs with proper spelling, grammar and put actual time and effort into the penmanship and design. It really does look more respectable than the childish scrawlings carried by bagger scum today.
