Meanwhile, Italy's defending 50 km walk champion has admitted doping and has no doubt set off at a brisk pace towards St Pancras International.

desertgeek: Track commentators really ripping on the British pole vaulter's coach for not letting her focus on the vault.

On the world feed they've shown all the coaches doing the same thing, seems like the commentators on your feed just wanted an excuse to rip team GB.

Not sure what coaching there is at this stage. "Here's what I want you to do, you need to jump over that that bar."

I don't blame them, I was watching and wondering WTF was up with his constant nagging from the seats while she was up to vault.

ok serious question,

I've been watching US Soccer both men and women probably since 96 or so. Have we ever had a good backline? The men's team has been a damn sieve as long as i can remember. The women are better yet allow tons of length of the field runs only to get stopped by Solo or in the past by Scurry.

In this case though, the effort refers to an actual attempt, not just showing up to the game.

Not to the extent of the British coach and some not at all.

That's what I'm watching. I just think they hadn't noticed it until now.

Siamese Bream: xria: The Olympics in the UK still have legal protection against Murdoch, and luckily he is now not someone a politician will want to cosy up to (at least publicly) so it should be safe for a few years yet.

I do wonder for how long. I understand some Tory MPs want to get rid of the protected list altogether. I doubt they'll be putting it forward any time soon, though...people are rather enjoying a fortnight of wall-to-wall sport on free-to-air television.

Personally I am not really bothered about the free to air television part of it being with the BBC instead of Sky - the main thing is the online setup means you can dip in an out of any sport (live or not) as you like - having had to put up with ITVs online equivalent during World Cups and have to sit through adverts every time you join a stream (particular bad when the stream keeps freezing), that would be impractical/annoying if it was a commercial channel with the rights.

I think it's an American tendency to want to attack everything they see that hinders us in the defense department.

I wouldn't want them on commercial channels for just that reason, and I wouldn't want them on Sky because (a) those subscriptions are bloody expensive and (b) fark Murdoch.

You'd think they'd be a bit better, what with the all the money going to the department of defense.

the year the women's team won the world cup they only gave up one goal during group play and then two goals during the three knockout games, according to Wiki. Not sure who the back line was then that those are solid stats.

You can't judge a backline just on goals scored.

Spain, for example, never concede goals; however their back line is the weakest part of their entire game.

The reason they don't concede goals is their midfielders are insanely good at keeping possession

The American teams have also been blessed with a series of fairly elite goalkeepers, which has made the perpetual defensive shortcomings less pronounced...at least in the score line. I'd like to think the development groups would make defense a higher priority if we were letting in a handful of goals a game...
