Well look at all the attention a worthless back up QB for the jets is getting... Being a hot virgin is media gold. I have nothing against Lolo, but she is a "Kournikova"

she did get first place in her qualifying race today, and posted the second fastest time of all the winners, so i'd say the Kournikova comparisons are a little premature until after the olympics

They're not wrong.

The "Kournikova as an insult" trend isn't exactly helping empower anyone, either. I guess it's not an accomplishment to be one of the top 10 in the world at your sport/profession if you're sexy. Then you're talentless and the only reason you're famous is because of your attractiveness.

"If you ain't the best, you're the worst!"

It seems like these sports channels and specifically NBC would be in better shape if they didn't focus all their efforts on the 5 or 6 hot athletes that could possibly medal, and do a more widespread focus on many of the American athletes across more sports.

For example, on one of their morning shows, they could've had a top 100 American athlete countdown with a 10 minute segment everyday leading up to the Olympics on each of these people. That way we already have a good idea on who these athletes are as they are going through their qualifying rounds, making it much easier to root for them. NBC could still do their primary marketing around the potential major players, but now they won't look as foolish if they don't live up to expectation.

Lolo Jones is not a New Yorker? And is a celeb with no New York cred or sympathetic fans? Born in flyover country and chooses to live in bumfark Louziana instead of NewYork? Yeah New York media outlets will go full hipster douchebag on her for those farking crimes. Duh. Biatch should be grateful the NYT doesnt pull some strings with important people to have her removed from team USA and deported from England..

Is this the same NY Times that's been sipping at the font of Teebow's cock since the trade was announced? I'm not saying the Times is wrong here about Jones, I'm just saying the Times is a shiatty rag that has no true journalistic values.

Are ugly top-10 tennis players who never win championships usually very, very famous?

Maybe we should stop caring about these people's personal lives and their attractiveness and concentrate on whether or not they're good athletes and how many events they win.

If you're an Olympic athlete and you're known more for being a "celebrity" then you're already failed.

She's from Des Moines, Iowa. I'm from Des Moines, Iowa. I can't stand her. She's a class A attention whore who ripped off the marketing plan for Disney Channel Princesses and brought it to track and field. Slowlo Jones has not accomplished anything of note in competition except for a willingness to eliminate all shame in promoting herself.

That there don't jib with my simple, small-town, middle America values, I tell you what.

Here's the thing:

Dominant athlete: Famous
Attractive athlete: Internet famous
Dominant and attractive athlete: Idol

Also, she did win a few championships in doubles. So she parlayed athletic success into another kind of success she desired and had aptitude for. Is she not allowed to pursue other goals? Athletes are only supposed to care about sports and nothing else, even when their sport is a fringe sport that provides far less money than being attractive does?

Oh, and Kournikova isn't that famous outside of sports circles.

American athletes in sports lacking a professional system need sponsorships in order to support themselves while they train. The United States is (IIRC) the only country that does not provide public support for it's Olympic system...relying entirely on private sponsorship.

She wouldn't have to attention whore so much if federal, state, or local (as in Des Moines) governments provided some support.

Exactly. Why people biatch about this is beyond me. It's earth people - it could have happened no other way. God knows we have plenty of mega famous people who have no discernible skills except being hot. That she became one of the elite ot her profession is a point in her favor, not one against.

The bible thumper I work with who is waiting til marriage to give her special gift to her husband practially worships Lolo and Tebow and she just got in on some 29 year old archer that is going home to plan her wedding now. The way she acts you would think Tebow won a superbowl all by himself and Lolo won gold in every event she is in.

And I'd argue that Kournikova wasn't all that famous, either. The point is that she has become a trite go-to for idiots who act as though sports hype has ever had anything to do with success on the field. Michael Jordan was super-hyped long before he ever won anything, as was LeBron. Baseball players are hyped before they ever win. Andy Roddick was hyped far more than he ever was, and takes a lot of sh*t for it, as though it's his fault.

No one ever accused him of only being famous because he was attractive, though.

Oh, wait, only women get famous because they're attractive.

Not a huge fan of the "unless you're winning titles, you shouldn't be well-known because you're worthless" idiotic mindset. Is it really any better than telling people they aren't important because they're not attractive?

They didn't try to push black athletes that suck. I don't recall squares balling their eyes out because of all the HATERS that hate on Daunte Culpepper who just WINS GAMES and has SO MUCH HEART!

I'm not calling it racist or anything so don't get your panties in a bunch. People relate to people that look like them. The market for mediocre white players far exceeds that for mediocre black players because of it.

Yeah it's definitely about skin color and not about how in 2008 she was the favorite to win but tripped on a hurdle and lost so this time would be redemption for her. No one gives a shiat about stories like that.

It's so bad, this white dude from Great Britain named Mo Farah who is good at the 10,000 meters had to move to the U.S. so he could concentrate because he was so popular. Well, I'm pretty sure he was white but I know he was super popular and that's why he had to move because NBC had a lengthy story on him before his race and kept jabberin on about him and his story.

She's not even remotely the favorite in 2012 and yet we're in here talking about her and not the Americans that she will lose to.

It's because I used the race word. I didn't even say it was bad, I just said it exists. Pointing out race, even in a non-negative context is bad.

I'm probably a race-pimping race card carrying racist because I've mentioned how marketing works. Next I'll break out the shocking assertion that ugly people can't sell things either which will brand me as playing the looks card. God damn, lookist I am.

I tend to save my honest replies for more honest posts. He just made up a whole bunch of shiat, imagined a few hypotheticals that would totally support his argument if you accept his imagination as truth and drew broad conclusions from it. You're asking for a serious reply? Why are your standards so high for me but non-existent for his post?

Here is his argument, broken down.

Rapmaster2000: Allyson Felix is better looking and a much better athlete, but no one cares

In Rapmasters opinion, another athlete is better looking. From this we should assume everyone agrees with him that Felix is better looking. Further, Rapmaster totally believes no one cares about Felix. No data but in his imagination that is true, therefore we are supposed to accept this as fact as well.

Rapmaster2000: The market for mediocre white players far exceeds that for mediocre black players because of it.

Rapmaster totally has the belief that LoLo Jones "sucks." We are required to agree to this belief to follow his argument. He then, from this single example draws broad conclusions about all white and black athletes and the relative advertising markets for them. No examples, no proof, just "LoLo Jones sucks in my opinion yet is in advertisements therefore all white athletes are preferred in advertisements."

Rapmaster2000: People relate to people that look like them.

This is stated as a fact. We are required to accept it as a fact because Rapmaster2000 declared it as such on the internet forum Fark.com. No examples, no logical explanation, just a simple declaration of facts.

I get what he was trying to say. He backed it up with an opinion based anecdote to draw broad conclusions. I think he did a shiat job of defending his point. You think...

JohnBigBootay: he made it fairly well.

JohnBigBootay: So... what's your point?

He's an idiot worthy of mockery. Maybe he's right maybe he's wrong but the argument he brought to defend it is worthy of our ridicule.

Why do we assume sports stars should get endorsement deals?

And we should all watch the Olympics knowing that marketable, hot looking athletes get better coaching and development help every step of the way.

Well, I think that's a bit much. I think it's a simple truth that if you could somehow find two female athletes with the exact same resume and personality I think the white chick would do better in marketing opportunities just because the world's largest economy has quite a few more white people in it. I don't think it's bias, it's just humdrum basic math marketing strategy.

At any rate I think her being named LOLO and a virgin has a hell of a lot to do with it. If she was a who-er named margaret I'm not sure we'd be hearing that much about her despite her previous achievements.

And last, but not least...I'm I'm honestly confused because I thought Lolo was mixed race.

What about a guy like Chad Johnson?... or Ocho whatever the hell his name now...

He's been mediocre for a long time... (it's arguable that he was never better than mediocre) and he's done an exceptional job of marketing himself which has probably extended his career and certainly extended his earning potential.

Being good at sports is neat and all... I don't see what's wrong with using whatever marketable assets one has to make some money. It's a beautiful person's world.
