The idea that without the Beatles time would have stood still in the music world is patently absurd. It's baby boomer masturbation and navel gazing.

Yoko Ono takes far too much blame for breaking up the Beatles. The fact is, that process had begun long before she came along.

I think a much more important factor is the death of Brian Epstein. He'd always shielded them from the business side of things, and when he died, the arguments about the money and direction of the band began. Especially when Lennon brought in total scumbag Alan Klein.

John did, by very purposefully placing her in every scene. On some levels here, yoko is a victim. Of course she followed john... He was a charasmatic guy guy who was also the biggest star on earth. We demonized her unfairly... Which is easy to do after seeing how she sold his name down the river for every merch opportunity.

John broke up the band because he felt it was his band and paul was taking that away. I'm only 40, so i missed the boat on this era.

And yes... If you don't like the Beatles you don't like music. EVERY major talent since will cite them as influence. Even a guy like Ozzy who is a HUGE Paul fan.

I can't see how the Beatles could possibly be underrated. After all, if you don't like the Beatles, you don't like music and are very probably a terrible human being.

It's demographics. The boomer generation hit its stride when the Beatles hit - timing. The boomer generation gets catered to because of its purchasing power. The Beatles led the boomer generation through its phases - from doe-eyed pop idols to pot-fueled hippies to disillusioned middle-aged hipsters disgusted by their own excess and success.

Many boomers thus identify very strongly with the Beatles. That's so many of them react so rabidly when faced with the opinion that the Beatles' influence and talent is overrated, and their enduring popularity due solely to the fact that they were the most popular teen band of the boomer generation.

Very little is about the music. I'll grant that it was evolutionary, but not revolutionary (like jazz, etc, etc). But you simply can't tell a fan that, because marketers have been telling them otherwise for 50 years. For the boomers, all culture springs from their generation. And marketers will continue to tell them that because boomers hold 80% of the wealth and spend over half the discretionary dollars in the US and Europe.

If the boomers came of age in the 1980s, we would all be taught that the most influential and talented musicians of all time were Madonna and Michael Jackson.
