Just so long as they don't threaten to give back Russell Crowe and we Kiwis will be fine. I don't care if the Aussies were drunk when we left Crowe at a bar in King's Cross. They took him fair and square.

It's funny, I was asked to name a famous Aussie and said Russell Crowe, and the Australian who asked the question took umbrage with my response. I had been unaware that he's a Kiwi.

/the same Aussie asked me today what the difference between a New Zealander and yogurt is
//my (correct) guess: yogurt is cultured
///not my actual opinion of Kiwis, I've just heard several versions of that joke...

Read the book "The Fatal Shore." It might change your mind about that "convict" thing.

What I find weird is I think every country ranks the medal table by golds, then silver, then bronze. But the USA media ranks it by total medal count.

On a very special episode of "Flight of the Concords"......

And a big thank you to Crewmannumber6....for posting pics of the posters from Murray's office.

Bonus points if you can find the one that says "If you don't expect much, it's great."

I probably would have said Mick Dundee.

What I find weird is that I disproved your statement by going to exactly one country's media (England - 2 newspapers and the BBC) to see that they ranked the medals by total count. Who knows what I'd find of I went to the other 200?

Count by the BBC looks like it's by gold-silver-bronze to me.

4 South Korea 11 5 6 22
5 France 8 9 9 26

Gotta admit, it's been a hoot looking at all the countries ahead of us on the medal table. (Except the Poms, then it's just annoying, and the Kiwis, then it's just embarrassing. You're supposed to be asking us to bring back the combined teams we used to send back in the '20s.) But being three places below Hungary and other places which can't afford to put taxpayer dollars into sport based on estimated medal chances warms my cynical little heart.

Of course, as I recall when the U.S. was in this situation against China, their TV networks suddenly switched from ranking by number of gold medals to ranking by number of medals total. At least we're honest . . .

The 2012 Olympics is a bunch of countries taking their flags onto British soil and trying to get a bunch of gold. It's like history in reverse.

And as a coincidence, Robert Hughes, the author of "The Fatal Shore" just died a day or so ago. Quite the historian. This book is a must read.
