To understand why South Korea has gaming addiction, you have to understand Korean culture, history, the education system (including hagwons), and the current job market. Once you have that understand and still want to try to apply what you've learned to gaming addiction in the US, then you are useless.

Solty Dog: If you belong to an online clan, guild, or gang, you are beyond help.

Yeah. Humans building social groups around shared interests? That's really farked up man. Competitive game guilds are almost as bad as those weirdos that get together every week, hijack our cable, and televise their weird ball-handling tournaments. What is it they call themselves? Oh yeah; "sports teams". farking wierdos.

My name's footshot, and I'm a WoWaholic. I've been clean for 2 years...

When you're:

- Levelling fishing.
- Grinding the same farking set of dailies for the umpteenth time.
- Or even grinding the same farking instance in the hope of some random drop.

It may be time to re-evaluate what you're actually getting from this game.

HST's Dead Carcass:

Years ago I was super addicted to games, but it wasn't the games fault. Once I got help for my real issues, addictions to things like drugs, alcohol and games seemed to disappear.

This.

I played wow for like 6 years straight, even lead a raiding guild for 5 of those years. It was a pretty warm place, with people who understood me during a rather farked up period in my life. Once I worked through that shiat, I found myself loathing even looking at a video game.

It's so much easier to be a somebody online than it is in real life. The rules, boundaries and such are already set in games, so you need to follow the logical course of gaining levels or specific skills in order to succeed. Making it that much more devious are 'achievements' in games. Lord knows once the levels run out, you need something to keep you plugging into your Skinner Box, so they throw these in there.

Games are not the problem, it's the people that use them to compensate their lives from being useless. I play video games for entertainment, and make sure they don't interfere with real life. Years ago I was super addicted to games, but it wasn't the games fault. Once I got help for my real issues, addictions to things like drugs, alcohol and games seemed to disappear.

Lumbar Puncture: I loved their signs of gaming addiction article. If you are so absorbed in a game that you lose your job, it's probably a sign of greater issues in your life than just video games. Instead of blaming the destination of why someone is seeking escapism, maybe ask what they're escaping from.

I'm inclined to agree here. Compulsive gaming is far more likely to be a symptom than a cause.

What, no pictures of Star Craft obsessed South Koreans glued to their computers? No video of those three guys they talked to showing them going through treatment?
