Jesus Christ, I just dont understand why Microsoft is doing this. This is the biggest farking mistake they have ever made. Everyone tells them this, but they just plug their ears screaming "IM NOT LISTENING!".

MicroSoft, although I use OS X as my primary OS, I also am a gamer, and Windows is where the games are at. I do care about Windows. Hell, when Vista came out, I was a big defender of it. But I cannot defend this! This interface just does not work on a mouse and keyboard system. Please, please, PLEASE, just get rid of it.

They are doing it because they want to move everything to touch screen, which has been Bill Gates' dream for years. In addition, the PC manufacturers are pushing for it because they can charge more money for a laptop with a touch screen. Accessories companies are pushing it as well, because hey, that flat panel monitor you just bought last year isn't a touch screen! You have to replace it! Don't like fingerprints on your monitor? Buy this new touchpad for your desk! Look at how well Windows 8 looks on your TV! You'd better purchase a new one, because your old one isn't a touch screen!

It's not just a move to get people to buy a new OS - they want people to replace everything they already have (except maybe your keyboard).

As bad as it is, (and I've used it, it's as bad as you think when it comes to a keyboard and mouse) the UI you're used to is still in there, you'll just have to take an extra step to get into it every time you start up.

I just finished installing a new HTPC running Win7 and I assume I'll upgrade to Win8 at some point. However, neither my desktop nor my television (obviously) are touchscreen. My thought is to get one of those over-sized multi-touch Logitech touch pads to use as the primary interface on the TV and to stick with the traditional UI on the desktop.

The UI is hilariously bad but since it can easily be worked around, it's not a big problem to me.

What scares me is the App Store. Another walled garden, another competitor trying to copy Apple rather than innovate... I'm sure they will try to get me to pay more money to accomplish the same things Windows 7 already does.

I believe Apple computers actually outsold PCs in the last quarter. This horrible decision will not only deter people from sticking with PCs, but they've broken the UI for Server 2012 too.

Hey, man, get with the program.... you are a worthless idiot if you can't figure out the simple commands, like "Alt-F4" to close an app, or "Alt-Windows-P-F14" to switch between apps, or if you are too dumb to know, intuitively, the simple gestures to perform basic operations, like the "swirl-swipe-double tap" gesture to open files.

Geez, it's like you are all worthless monkeys unworthy of Windows 8!!! I bet you losers don't even have tabletop touchscreens for your PCs yet and expect to keep using mice and trackballs!!!

You can believe that, but that doesn't make it true. Apple sales in 2Q12 were 12% marketshare -- meaning that Windows still holds on to a ~88% share. (Somewhere in there are a few fractions of percent for Linux.)

Tablets are neat and everything...but nothing, so far, compares to the desktop experience. Your hand is resting on a mouse and you are looking straight ahead at a large screen. If you can't type without looking, that's really the only point you have to tilt your head down.

With the tablet, you have to hold it with one hand and swipe with the other while looking downward at a much smaller space than a desktop monitor. It's not practical for long periods of time.

Yeah, it always bugged me whenever I'd read 'tech' articles stating that we would all be moving away from the keyboard/mouse to a touchscreen on desktop machines. How long do you think you can hold your arm aloft in order to control your machine? We're still using the old keyboard and mouse combo because it just works for desktops, just like cars still use a steering wheel. Handheld devices sure, touch is often better.

Well, hmm. The argument is regarding consumer home computers and your rebuttal is a report of sales of pre-fabricated computers by selected major vendor.

Not every home consumer buys a pre-fab and there are other, very large markets that buy pre-fabs in bulk.

Also the major source of the analysis was Gartner, please try not to suck at this so much in the future.

For desktops I could imagine that UI working nicely with technology that doesn't require to smudge your fingers against the screen, but rather can detect fingers and motions up to 3 inches away from the screen. It'd be nice to be able to swipe up and down, zoom with fingers, touch the icons, etc from a few inches away. Sort of like the UI they had in Minority Report. I could imagine that happening in a few years.

That movie would have been a lot better if it had been an original IP and not Star Trek. The glacial pacing and overall tone just didn't fit well with the Star Trek setting. It felt cold and clinical, like they wanted to mash up Star Trek with 2001: A Space Odyssey. Or maybe the plot ran short so they went with the overly-long special effects shots to pad the length.

As a pure sci-fi movie it works, and there's nothing wrong with it. But as a Star Trek movie it falls flat on its face.

I am pretty happy with Unified Remote (Windows server and Android app). I wouldn't want to use it as my sole mouse, but for HTPC remote control use it's pretty good. http://www.unifiedremote.com/

I disagree. The movie centered around the character of James Kirk. 2001 undeniably made an impact in its pacing but it was otherwise a movie version of the TV show.

It's hard to argue with "as a Star Trek movie" though. I loved Wrath of Khan but I think it's unfortunate that its heavy cribbing from Horatio Hornblower had such an impact on sci-fi in general.

Then there's the NextGen movies which are just plain baffling... Noted intergalactic scholar and diplomat Jean Luc Picard turned Michael Bay action hero? Bleh.

If I were to guess, it would be because Win7 is pretty much the ultimate evolution of the Windows desktop. The only way they can hole to innovate without being accused to trying to sell people an update pack is to change everything about it. Even if the whole thing is ass-backwards design wise.

How to close a program in Windows:

Windows 95-Windows 7: Click the Close Button.

Windows 8 - Click near the top of the Metro app and while holding down the mouse button carefully drag the mouse cursor down to the bottom of the screen and release the button... WTF Microsoft?

I would agree with that. The thing is that Win 2K Pro was very good right out of the box (like Windows 7 was). That type of success without service packs is extremely rare with Microsoft.

I just got the opportunity to do a walk through with "metro" a couple of weeks ago. I went straight back to the office and told management if they decided to roll it out, we'd need to outsource the call center.
