Toshiro Mifune's Letter Opener: GAT_00: List totally farking fails for not including Gattaca.

I'd easily take out Avatar and substitute Gattaca. Good call.

I'm unsure of a couple at the top of the list that I've never heard of - about half the list above 40 - I'd also toss Hunger Games. No reason it should be on there.

Woah, wait. Where the fark is Fifth Element?

Ahem. Forbidden Planet should be in the top ten.

This is not open to debate.

I'll be in my bunk.

Good one! I just re-watched that on Netflix. Now if they would only do this one.

Moontrap is on utube unedited.

Watched Lifeforce last weekend. Still falls apart in the third act pretty hard. Saw the director's cut, but I'm not sure it added anything more. Mathida May was 18-19 when she did that film.

This scared the hell out of me as a kid. I think it was more sound design than the image...

Most of you have listed movies I agree with should be added. What about Stargate? I've always liked that one.

Plus Splice is a total piece of sh*t of a movie.

Toshiro Mifune's Letter Opener: Ricardo Klement: The plot is a good one: an insane scientist may have come across how to transit a black hole and survive the event. His ship - the long-lost USS Cygnus - is equipped with an anti-grav device not seen before, and his crew is missing. In the meantime, a deep-space exploration ship, Palomino, on its way back is diverted to check out the black hole when they find the ship, keeping station near the point of no return. It turns out the insane scientist is more insane than they would like, and they need to get the fark out of there.

You can do a LOT with that.

It sounds infinitely better than Event Horizon, so I'll give it points for that.

There is also an abused robot.

crypticsatellite: The only ones on the list that I haven't seen are 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' and "The Hunger Games.'

Oddly enough, those were the two I was going to complain about.

In what universe in is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Sci-Fi? What in that movie can't/doesn't happen in real life?

To me calling The Hunger Games Sci-Fi is like calling Mad Max Sci-Fi. Just because something takes place int the future doesn't make it Sci-Fi.

/Definately see both movies, Eternal Sunshine was free on Hulu last I checked

this list is all over the place. without establishing your criteria, and then only including films that meet that criteria, your list will be to expansive.

why not also include:

Night of the Living Dead et al.
Groundhog Day
Starship Troopers
King Kong
They Live

Escape From New York
'Mad Max' et al.
Event Horizon
Donnie Darko
Logan's Run
Spaceballs

Soylent Green
Fahrenheit 451
Total Recall, Running Man, Predator
Dune
Frequency...

of course this thread will probably include a lot of great movies that are not on this list, and like all lists, this is subjective.

and eventually you'll get to titles such as:

Congo
John Carter
Pluto Nash
Osmosis Jones

Metropolis should be #1. I'm not saying that there would be no movies about dystopian futures and flying cars without it but it was first to do it. And it featured a robot chick before computers were even invented. Metropolis was the grandfather of all movie sci-fi. And unlike a lot of movies on that list, it had shiat to say.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Splice should be replaced with Species because Species had boobies. NSFW

I'm debating its place on the list. It doesn't really seem too... sci-fi-ish enough, ya know?
