Moon is too low on the list.

I'll just put up Le Voyage dans la lune. It's not one of the 50 best sci-fi movies, but it is a sci-fi movie "every geek should watch". You gotta start at the beginning.

Majick Thise: No love for 'Starship Troopers' ??? WTH?

That was a terrible movie.

Toshiro Mifune's Letter Opener: Ricardo Klement: In other news, I also revisited the Black Hole - a Gawdawful movie from an execution standpoint, but THERE is a candidate for a remake that could actually be good.

The only thing I remember about that was Maximilian Schell.

And the pop-up book.

Hey, I had the pop-up book too.

And it was actually a pretty farked up movie, especially for an official Disney film. farked up zombie drones, a killer robot that chops people up and an ending when they finally go through the black hole that made me fee like I was on an acid trip and I was three years old.

Exactly zero love for that piece of cinematic filth.

Ricardo Klement: Both involved redheads.

Well if red is your thing...

crypticsatellite: The only ones on the list that I haven't seen are 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' and "The Hunger Games.'

Oddly enough, those were the two I was going to complain about.

In what universe in is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Sci-Fi? What in that movie can't/doesn't happen in real life?

To me calling The Hunger Games Sci-Fi is like calling Mad Max Sci-Fi. Just because something takes place int the future doesn't make it Sci-Fi.

/Definately see both movies, Eternal Sunshine was free on Hulu last I checked

2012-08-05 07:49:55 PM
No Demolition Man either.

2012-08-05 07:54:08 PM
Umm, they had Inception, but not Paprika? Which was Satoshi Kon magnum opus, and released before Inception.

I assume this list is limited to 'American" films only?

I havn't read Hunger Games or seen the movie, although I didn't think it was categorized as scifi.

Outside of that, everything else is kind of a blur.

The plot is a good one: an insane scientist may have come across how to transit a black hole and survive the event. His ship - the long-lost USS Cygnus - is equipped with an anti-grav device not seen before, and his crew is missing. In the meantime, a deep-space exploration ship, Palomino, on its way back is diverted to check out the black hole when they find the ship, keeping station near the point of no return. It turns out the insane scientist is more insane than they would like, and they need to get the fark out of there.

You can do a LOT with that.

But... but... Bladerun... oh.

Heh, no kiddin'? Awesome!

Small world, that... I didn't know if ANYONE on here remembered that thing...

Man... I may have to dig this one up sometime...

A Trip to the Moon?

For historical purposes, I would include it.

It sounds infinitely better than Event Horizon, so I'll give it points for that.

There is also an abused robot.

Toshiro Mifune's Letter Opener: The only one on the list that I have real issue with Avatar..

I was thinking the same thing. But in 3D, as a special effects masterpiece, it earns it's place. Not a very good movie. but pure sci-fi eye candy.

It technically takes place in a future dystopia, with the people in charge having fantastic weapons and vehicles that is beyond the current science. So there is a potential argument in favour of it being called Sci-Fi. That does no, however, support it being on a list of 50 Sci-Fi movies for geeks to watch.

List fails without The Time Machine.

not sure some of this should be on this list

I agree Metropolis should be at the top

2012-08-05 08:04:47 PM
There are definitely more movies that could be on the list, but 49 out of the 50 I can't complain about. Avatar, as I said above, is my only niggle (that's not a racist word).

Quantum Apostrophe: www.schickele.com

Oh, man, I remember Silent Running way back in the day. I saw it on TV as one of those movies-on-the-weekend things for a local channel.

Bruce Dern made that compelling, made that work.

That, and I believe that it *was* one of the influences behind certain elements of MST3K (the host segments, not the movie riffing, naturally).

Dumb-Ass-Monkey: I was thinking the same thing. But in 3D, as a special effects masterpiece, it earns it's place. Not a very good movie. but pure sci-fi eye candy.

I'll give it its props on the technical levels.

For everything else, oh lawd, it's a derivative, one-note mess. It's a 3D movie that's predominantly one-dimensional.

2012-08-05 08:05:18 PM
No love for Armageddon? Not just a sci fi masterpiece, but a cinematic gold standard for all film.

2wolves: Techhell: /Read my mind now, moran.

... dammit. Well, a beer instead of a martini, but I was looking at my empty vodka bottle while I was reading the list.

No Avatar, this isn't a list regarding technical merit, it's just dancing with wolves, in space.

2012-08-05 08:06:26 PM
zedster: wait, why is Minority Report on that list?

Agreed, it should be replaced by just about anything else. Silent Running, eXistenZ, Primer...

What's with all the Star Wars movies?

They weren't sci-fi. They were more fantasy, or space opera.

Sci-fi requires a minimum of looking into new technologies and their implications.

The Star Wars movies existed in a setting of Sufficiently Advanced Technology that seems to have come to its asymptote and become ubiquitous long ago, with societal changes having been long since done, thereby having effect whatsoever on the plot other than being part of the background.

35. 'The Hunger Games' (2012)

What. the. fark.

fark you film.com

So... Wall-E is at #13.

Ahead of Wrath of Khan, 2001, Terminator, Brazil, Iron farking Giant, Tarkovsky's Solaris...

You Pixar fanboys are nuts.

I'm not sure I understand the Avatar hate. That was a solidly entertaining movie. It's certainly as good (and I'd say better) as JJ Adam's Star Trek that made the list.

2012-08-05 08:09:12 PM
And replace Total Recall with Robocop.

2012-08-05 08:09:38 PM
Dark City is one of my all time top movies. It and Saving Ryan's Privates are the only 2 DVDs I own, not big on re-watching movies.

Glad I'm not the only one who wondered why Avatar was so popular. Musta been the 3D, I saw it in 2D and it was just ok.

I gotta nominate Invaders From Mars. Came out 19'53'ish, saw it on TV as a kid, then saw it again a few years later. So many scenes I thought were from childhood dreams actually came from that movie.

The original was great.

The remake was horrible. Sorry, Tobe Hooper, it is.

Trollin'? Star Trek is far more Sci Fi than Star Wars. Star Wars is closer to Lord of the Rings than 2001 a space odyssey.

This is the never ending debate over the definition of "science fiction". (hint, there is none.) Toss in Clarke's Law and we need to include all fantasy. Speculative Fiction is probably the best we can ever hope for.

2012-08-05 08:14:58 PM
and now it's time to rewatch StarMan and cry a lot.

Thanks, Fark.

The Hunger Games is totally science fiction. The games take place in an artificial arena, where everything, including the weather, animals and plants can be synthetically created, changed, and controlled.

Good list

Will you people just stop with the Blade Runner love already? Cool story, good performances, it looked great, and yes, we love Harrison Ford, but holy crap that movie is a farking snoozefest.

Should be room somewhere on that list for Ikari XB1. 1963 Czechoslovakian offering with cheesy-as-hell special effects and a genuinely compelling story. (Remember to turn on subtitles.)

Silent Running is a personal favorite. Huey, Duey and Louie...

Planet of the Apes has no business being on a science fiction list. Fiction, yes, but has about as much to do with science as an old western.

Sorry, Blade Runner was awesome. Maybe not #1, that belongs to Metropolis but it was a great film.
