That's a pretty neat thing. Synchronicity, in that I was just thinking about Firefly's Galactica cameo.

My wife helped me build my gigantic Millennium Falcon set, so I'm getting a kick out of these replies. You've checked one of the list, now we just need the obligatory hater who hasn't actually touched a set in 20 years, but thinks today's wider selection of parts, colors, and themes somehow reduces the room for creativity.

Ok.... someone please explain how things like the engine nacelles work in LEGO? I am assuming they made significant technological advancements to LEGO in the past 20 years, but this looks like all the parts were made for this. Incredible

It's just really, really big, so building internal structure at weird angles is easier, and gaps and rough bits blend in better from a distance.

Lego has introduced hundreds of new parts in the past ten years or so, many of which are angled or allow SNOT (studs not on top) building. Technique has come a long way too.

neither my wife nor i are fans of all the specialized parts that come in EVERY fooking set they put out nowadays that's got more than 25 pieces.

/got crates of the older stuff in storage, just waiting on a large enough house to pull them out.
//by 'crates' i mean 3'x3'x3' containers, plural, packed just tight enough that they don't rattle when you move them. takes two people to lift them.

Haha- you played the Star Wars CCG! Dammit, I did too. I wish I had all that money back. Teenage me could have spent it so much better. A perfect example of what happens when a concept is half-conceived for every expansion.

But is that really Lego? Can you take the bricks and make other things out of it? To me, that's just whoring out the Lego name along with other licensed brands to rake in fan money.

The big UCS sets had/have a good mix of basic parts (and even colors, since internal structures were often a basic color instead of one of the exterior colors). A lot of the mini-figure sets have some juniorization going on, but even that's not as bad as it was in the '90s.

UCS Millennium Falcon build in stop-motion. Notice it's all generic Technic parts and whatnot. The most specialized part of the whole thing is the screen-printing on the radar dish.

No, its actually a horrid mix of the two. I saw it in person at Brickfair over the weekend and the color mix was jarring. That said, still a mighty impressive model in person.

Yes.

IMO, the most specialized parts in the whole thing are the sailboat riggings, used as the engine covers.

As I understand it, if you're building the UCS Falcon from parts, the screen-printed dish is unique to the set. But if you're willing to substitute a plain dish, the two big rigging pieces across the engines are the second hardest to find. Some of the unseen Technic bits of the skeleton are also rare in the color the set uses, but it's easy to substitute a different color since they won't be seen anyway.
